    Science gal,

I went to Hawaii for my Honeymoon.

Stayed at a place near Waikiki beach on Oahu for one week then did one week on Kauai in a timeshare. I am from NY, and figured I wouldn't ever get to Hawaii again so did the two weeks so we could really enjoy (probably was 3 days too long though)

Best thing we did was a helicopter tour on Kauai ,no doors on the helicopter, and it was with one other couple (we didn't know)....we landed at an isolated waterfall for a picnic lunch and swimming.

The funniest part about the helicopter was hubby and I "fighting" over who sat next to the "door" (remember there wasn't a door). Along comes the pilot and he sat us based on weight, so hubby got the "door", and I was seated in the middle between the pilot and my hubby. Hubby had the biggest smile on his face and was a bit "in your face". However, when the helicopter took off he was hanging on for dear life, despite being strapped in. Apparently his cheeks didn't fit entirely on the seat and he had a feeling like he was going to fall. Each time I elbowed him in the side he would bark at me to stop pushing him out! Lol

Anyhow Oahu was nice, but more "touristy". Kauai was breathtaking.

    Pat

Sciencegal, St. John and St. Croix are lovely. I was planning to move to St. Croix with my husband (at the time) and another couple and open a restaurant. We had already made preliminary visits in Dec. 2007 to scout for locations. That didn't work out. (See my original diagnosis date.) I am not wealthy but as a journalist, I wrote travel stories, thus making many of the trips a tax-deductible business expense. (I never made more than $75k as a journalist, and could not have made trips otherwise.)

If your husband likes to captain a boat, maybe you could rent one in the Virgin Islands and sleep aboard. I know couples who have done that, sailing from island to island (even the British Virgin Islands) It is not ultra expensive and you can be sociable (go to Foxy's or the Soggy Bottom) or private as you like (staying on board).

I hope you have a fabulous time in St. Louis. I think I know what you mean about having friends/family see you as "OK" after treatment. It's a mental boost to hear those we hold dear tell us we are looking healthy.

Keep sharing those trips, everyone. I'm learning a lot about places I've never been. It's a big world, and when we aren't enslaved by treatment chains, we deserve to see our share of it.

    Hello Colt45,

I am new to posting, my wife was diagnosed in April. I have been following your posts and we have alot in common. We are from NJ as well.  Its been very difficult to say the least. I know how you feel.  Im glad you and your wife have come thru the treatments and now she is enjoying vacation.  We are in the miidle of chemo and doing ok. We are looking forward to a mini break in Cape May after chemo and before rads, probably end of October. Glad to have another husband I can relate with!

Sciencgal, we honeymooned on St. John.  Beautiful place and great place for snorkeling and nature.  We snorkeled every day at a different location and it was so much fun.  We have also been to Virgin Gorda which was nice, but I didn't like it as much as St. John.

I struggle with vacation because I have a teenage son, so I have to think of places to keep him happy and us happy.  I'm perfectly happy in the water and at the beach all day for weeks on end. He wants stuff to do, but isn't clear what that is!

    @JDB53:

I love Cape May. It's been a while, but I've stayed in Bed & Breakfasts there.

I am sending you a PM.

Ronda and Two hobbies thanks so much. I think ST. John and St. Croix both do sound amazing. I finish everything (herceptin too) at the end of the year and am going to start planning our first trip there. My wonderful new bubby has never been there either. We will go see my brother in the keys and then jump off from Miami to one of the islands.

Joe and Colt I am so glad that you guys can get some support and companionship on here too. I heard my husband (who is a big brave tough guy) telling his buddy that nothing in his life has ever, ever scared him as much as my diagnosis. i think what the husbands go through with all of this is sometimes even harder than what we are enduring- after all we are the ones getting taken care of!

Sciencegal, so true. Women cancer patients (often) get coddled while husbands get nothing. Not even a Xanax. Vacations are NECESSARY to help patient and spouse recharge. There is an organization called Little Pink Houses of Hope that provides all expenses paid, week-long vacations to beach destinations. Some retreats are for families; some are for couples. I went to one w/my family in NC Outer Banks. There was a couples retreat in St. John earlier this year. If anyone would like more info. pls PM me. About 10 couples/families are chosen for each retreat.

    Sciencegal-

Your husband is correct.  I have had a difficult time dealing with this but we are getting through it day by day.  My wife is doing well with her chemo and remains very positive.  Husband have a feeling of helplessness going through this. All we can do is ge there in anyway we can. Thanks for the info Michelle.

I've got 4 more radiation treatments to go.

Tomorrow I am going with my husband to camp in Banff for the weekend. The forecast is for rain. How jolly!

It is our only opportunity to get away together this year. We have been hoping for an opportunity to visit Hawaii at some point, and the funny thing is that he is going there in September for a week to play field hockey, and I cannot afford to go with him.

BUT, in November I am traveling to Honolulu as well, to compete in a singing competition! My expenses are largely being paid by my chorus, so I am very fortunate, and we ARE both going to Hawaii .... just not at the same time!!

    Hi Everyone,

I've had become addicted to Pinterest prior to being diagnosed in February of this year.  I had pinned so many different vacation ideas of places I was going to see.  Well, Feb 22 I got the dreaded call of having cancer.  I started immediately with appointments, opionions, surgeries, chemos etc...  I decided midway through chemo that I'm no longer going to start pinning trips to my bucket list,  I'm changing the folder list to my REALITY LIST.  I plan on traveling to Singapore to swim in the most amazing infinity pool for 2 days and then go to Bali for 2 weeks to detox, enjoy yoga and just be.  The last couple of months have taught me not to procrastinate and to  do the things you want to do now.  A life with regrets is a life wasted in my opinion.  Enjoy your vacations ladies! We certainly deserve it for coming and surviving this.

Oh my gosh my brother, who lives in the Keys, just let me know that he proposed to his girlfriend and they are waiting until we can come out next April to get married. Yay!

So that will make our planned carribean trip a little shorter since we will want to be with them longer. Maybe Bahamas? Has anyone had a favorite place to stay there? It looks fairly easy to get there from Miami.

St. John and St. Croix will have to wait- I would want to spend a whole week there! :)

Sciencegal, congrats to your brother. What a wonderful event to look forward to!

Check out TripAdvisor for reviews of properties in Nassau. That's the easiest place in Bahamas to get to. Other cities besides Miami offer direct flights including Charlotte. Some Nassau hotels offer really low rates but they haven't been remodeled in years. The British Colonial Hilton is nice but no balconies. Compass Point is cute and funky, but it's apart from main hotel district. If you want to explore you'll have to take a cab ($$$) or bus ($2 I think). Stones Throw is a quaint B&B but not on the beach. I wouldn't waste my money at Atlantis but the sister property of the Cove might be all right. In Bahamas, food is not always great, even when it's expensive. I haven't stayed at an all inclusive but I don't read much praise about them. Take a day trip on ferry to Harbour Island, with its pink sand, my favorite beach on earth! If you can stay more than 3 nights I'd definitely stay in Harbour Island, but it is an extra plane (or ferry) to get there.

Wow THANK you! You have been so many places, I really appreciate your advice.

It sounds like bahamas is fairly over-rated, maybe because it is so close to Miami so the eateries, etc., don't have to be excellent?

are there other places you have been in the Caribbean that are a direct (not TOO long) plane flight from Miami that would be better? We will drive back up to Miami from the keys after the wedding for our departure.

This isnt until April but I am excited already!!

Science that is something to look forward to! Just wanted to say I quite enjoyed my trip to the keys if you just want to stay there. If I go back I would probably stay near islamorada. Haven't been to the Bahamas so I can't offer advice there but certainly is close.

Sciencegal, since you are flying out of Miami, you can get to Harbour Island, Bahamas pretty quickly. 1-hr flight on American Airline to the Governours Harbour airport in Eleuthera. (ELH). From there, you take a 5 min taxi ride to the dock, then a 10 min water taxi ride to Harbour Island. That's where I would go. The pink sand and blue water are exquisite. You're sure to see a photo shoot. It's a very laid back, tiny island and most people walk or use golf carts. I've stayed at Dunmore Beach Club and Pink Sands. Coral Sands is supposed to be nice. Rock House is on the bay side but highly rated. This website kind of explains what the island is like. http://myharbourisland.com/index.php. On my 2nd visit, met a waitress who graduated from college in my hometown, and the couple sitting next to me lived one town over. It is a small gorgeous world in Harbour Island, Bahamas.

4 days after my last chemo, my husband, dog and I drove to a cabin in Northern Minnesota on a wonderful, quiet lake with 8 acres of woods.  It was just what the doctor ordered.  I slept, read, sat in the sun and dangled my toes in the water.

In 8 days we head for Amelia Island in Florida and I am feeling pretty much back to normal so plan on swimming in the ocean, bike riding and doing a lot of cooking.  I think we all need something to look foward to and to reward ourselves for successfully finishing treatment.

Wonderful- both your past and future trips.

Yes I agree, it really helps to have a trip to look forward to when we are getting prodded with needles and made to show our chests to whole teams of people.

Dreaming of white (pink???) sand and gently lapping waves helps ME get through it anyway!!!

Sciencegal, not feeling so great these days. I've got some skin mets in right breast/underarm area growing incredibly fast and the reconstruction surgery I've looked forward to for months has been postponed. But ... I just spent a week at the beach in NC with my DH & son before school began and am going to Tybee Island, Ga, for Labor Day weekend. After that, back to Sloan-Kettering for some treatment changes and surgery. Happy to have time in the sun!
AmyQ, I like your vacation style.

Damned mets. I am SO sorry. I wish I could help somehow. I'm a scientist but not for breast cancer; we work in bone marrow transplantation and regenerative medicine.

The docs at Sloan Kettering are great, I sure hope they can help keep those mets at bay.

Have they done any molecular profiling? PDX mouse transplant/chemo testing? (the mice implanted with our tumors become our "avatars" for different chemo combinations, we are doing this at UC Davis where I work, with Jax labs).

I am sure wishing you the best. And I love Tybee island. That's great that you will be heading there, yay.

Thank you SO much for all of your advice!

You are welcome, sciencegal! I hope you have a fantastic trip after the family wedding celebration.

Thank you (and the rest of you extraordinary people) for encouragement, advice and simply being here.

Trying to avoid chemo for as long as possible. Hope this will help me with clinical trial enrollment. But I am inquiring about profiling and such.

Hi NoQuitter, I am so sorry you are going through all of this. Dang it. I sure hope you can get away in September, you sure deserve it!!! Ronda (tarheelMichelle) had mentioned some free perks that cancer patients can get in an earlier thread, I wonder if that might help if there are any local opportunities?

Welcome to the thread, there are some great girls on here sharing our dreams of getaways! My carribean trip is eight months away and I have two surgeries, lots of scans and continued herceptin between now and then, but the dreaming sure does help!

Ronda I hear not wanting chemo again- this is completely understandable. If they can find one of the targeted therapies for you it would sure be better. They should know a lot more once they get those danged mets out and examine their signatures. Until then, dreaming of pink sands!!! (that sounds SO cool). And ENJOY Tybee beach, I love the vibe of that whole little community and have often dreamed that I had a beach house there!

Thanks sciencegal. There is no "again" with chemo with me. I've not had it once. I'm an unusual Stage IV: still have my own boobies, never had any chemo. So when I meet someone for the first time and my Stage IV status comes up, the person's eyes immediately dart toward my chest and then my hair, ha ha ha.

I appreciate your recommendations regarding the mets and have asked MSKCC to schedule a biopsy.

Noquitter, you are among several women I have read about who had a serious illness/medical condition prior to cancer diagnosis, or recurrence, and it is curious to think about if one condition led to the other. So much mystery associated with cancer. Please consider planning a vacation, even a quick getaway, to celebrate a cancerversary or other milestone. We all deserve some sort of "vacation." I PM'ed info to you about Little Pink Houses of Hope. Crossing my fingers that you will be chosen for a getaway.

Anyone else have a special trip planned? Please share, even if those plans are only dreams at the moment.

No quitter I vote you spend on vacation if you need to. After all that is good for your health. Medical bills can be paid over time.

We are thinking about a long weekend sometime this fall. Maybe a SC or FL beach. Trying to find a spot between appts and classes and work. Stay tuned.

    Hi Ronda,

Gosh sorry I was just assuming you had already had chemo. I had never heard of anyone who wasnt immediately trundled in to full-on chemo after the diagnosis.

It honestly isnt so bad, if they can find something that can reduce your mets and keep them at bay so that they dont cause you so much pain I would sure recommend it.

And there are cold caps to save our hair- yours looks so pretty in the picture, it is worth trying to save, for sure. The caps work for most and aren't so bad.

I am dreaming a lot of the pink sands at Harbour Island, thanks to you. I really appreciate your wisdom in the travel arena!!!!

Twohobbies I sure do recommend a beach trip. we all deserve this!!!!!

    Hugs to all

Hello everyone. Hope it is ok for me to share some really good news in my world. 2 years ago, we were scheduled for a family vacation in Cancun. Then I was diagnosed so we had to cancel and instead had the initial consult with the surgeon on the day we would have left. My sister in law has a timeshare there and has decided we will do our next annual girls trip there. So I am thrilled to say that I am going to Cancun in February 2014.....

Yay Odie!!! Great for you- and the trip will be even sweeter after the delay.

It is not a vacation but a day trip - I am actually getting ready to go out to brunch on a boat - this will be the first time I am out on the water all summer, after surgery and rads. I had to dig out my dusty bikini!

    Happy SUnday to all
