Exercise - Working Back to it After or During Treatment

Loving this weather! The air feels great. Did some good walking in Boston after my dr appt today.
-
yesterday, I went to the Habitat Re-Store to pick up a cabinet. I bought it Saturday, but when they had loaded it up I was scared to drive at freeway speed and didn't know how to get where I was going on surface streets. Monday, I came back prepared with directions from google maps that avoided the freeway except one very short distance (which turned out to be only on ramps, not the freeway itself, yippee). They re-loaded the cabinet, I drove to my new place, helped unload it, drove to the Re-store down there to buy a countertop, helped load that up, unloaded it by myself, then drove back home. I was one pooped puppy by the time I got back, but the remodel is making progress! Today was support group day, so I walked up the hill and back down again after the meeting--four blocks each way.
-
curve - I am tired just reading that!
I am feeling a bit cabin-feverish - have been staying in the house with the tonsillectomy patient! Tomorrow I need to go have bloodwork (cholesterol) done, but I have to drive quite a distance - I might have to divert myself over and do some shopping for a while before coming back home! Walking around in the air-conditioned mall may have to suffice for exercise, lol!

Gritgirl---Off topic but did anyone ever tell you not to wax under your arms after MX? My waxer said she heard it's ok but another girl in the salon said she heard never wax after mx. Advice?
-
@lala, I've never waxed either before or after cancer dx, but I have noticed that since my mx I can't feel heat or cold in that area. Is wax for hair removal applied hot? If so, the advice heard by the other girl in the salon may be because without the ability to sense heat, the hot wax could cause serious burns before the person being waxed notices there is any problem. I would guess the amount of sensation lost due to surgery varies from person to person, depending on the location of tumor & sentinel nodes, the exact extent of the incision and other factors. Ask your surgeon--maybe if you are still able to feel differences in temperature in the underarm area, it's safe for you to be waxed.
-
I'll stick my head in and give my opinion about waxing. I hope you don't mind, gritgirl. I didn't have MX but had SNB so I have two scars in my left underarm area. I understand not wanting to be burned by wax, but aestheticians should be testing the wax anyway. I actually started waxing right after my breast surgery. With the scars, it was hard to shave, and the repositioning of the skin made some of the hair grow in a "different" direction. I have sensitive skin and always had extreme redness after shaving. So ... waxing is my preference. It seems to irritate my skin a lot less than shaving. The other bonus is that the regrowth is soft, not stubbly. I think I should be charged less for my left underarm, since after radiation 1/2 of my underarm doesn't grow hair. That's a perk.
-
tarheel, no worries. this ain't my show. i don't know anything about waxing, but i agree, call your doctor to find out. there might be lymphedema risk with it. luckily, i had laser hair removal before all this started
curveball, when you run out of things to move, come on over here and i'll give you stuff to move. :-)
specialk, i plan to be a mall walker myself.
it still is beautiful here and i got my walking to and from the subway done. but once home, i just chilled.
everyone stay cool or warm, depending on where you are.
-
Glad you had nice weather, gritgirl. I didn't do any exercise today, except walk the aisles at Target, but it was a lovely day in NW North Carolina. So nice to sit outside in late July without having a heat stroke.
-
I babysat for a 3 and 5 year old for 11 hours today while their mom went for chemo. That counts as exercise enough but I managed to swim at the lake too. But then we got pizza and ice cream so I probably ended up even...

Hi gritgirl
Mara
Next doors dog is as lazy as me lol. Only walks when it's cool.
Just to let you know I am off travelling again. Hope this will make me more energetic going on a history tour of the UK. I just love castles and cathedrals so going to do it now while I can still clamber about. This letrozole is doing my joints in unless I keep going I seize up.I hope everyone enjoys the cool break over there -
Mara, have fun on your trip.
Ginger, eating isn't a sin here. As long as we just keep moving. :-)
Tarheel, I love Target walking.
Today was a medium day for walking. Might get out for a walk. Came home a bit early to meet an A/C contractor. I have window units and was talking about putting in central air. Doinker didn't show up. Sheesh.
-
Thanks curveball and tarheelmichelle. I don't have much sensation under that arm. I can't feel light touch but can feel pressure. I think I'll check with my BS. My PS doesn't seem to have a clue about something like this, which is normal, he doesn't have a clue about anything other than actually reconstructing a breast which he's a rock star at.
I'll also check with the aesthetician about the temperature. I just read a few places that they worry the waxing can open your skin to infection and thus possibility of lymphadema but then other articles just recommend no razors. I'm pretty good with a razor but I have one very "cavelike" spot that seems to be out of reach and it's looking just like a man's soul patch! Thus, it needs to go!
-
Gritgirl- haha...eating is never a sin to me; maybe that's the problem 🙀
Today was spent moving furniture to set up my classroom. Hope to swim tomorrow. -
Gritgirl, that A/C contractor must be a former cable guy.
Lala, I have an "underarm cave" too, and it's hard to see while shaving/showering. I can't see hair unless I look in a mirror. I'm afraid if I don't wax regularly I'll take a peek one day and it will be a full grown beard!
Enjoy your history trek Mara. I am envious, except when I think you may be climbing lots of stairs.
I walked around the block this evening once with my DH and DS, then once more with my DS. The sunset clouds were pink. Hope all of you can see pretty pink clouds from where you are, too. -
Tarheel. I laughed when I read the comment about the cable guy.
We're a little warmer today in DC. Thank goodness not 100 degrees. Got basic walking in today but now hiding inside in the A/C. Tonight will be movie night. :-) -
Back online after a few days. As far as waxing, I was told no waxing, exploratory on the lymph node side and special caution with razor. Recommendation was electric razor. Numbness puts you at risk for nicks and cuts which can cause infection and/or lymphedema.
On a side note, I finally got my drain out yesterday! Cross your fingers that all stays well!
Martha -
Rhody. Glad you got the drain out.
My question, is driving an exercise? Then that's how I exercised today. :-) -
You used your hands AND feet, right, gritgirl? That's gotta count for something. ;-)
Extra credit for rubbernecking. -
Tarheel. You are a funny, funny lady. It rained hard when I was driving home, and that took extra work, so it was sort of like rubber necking. :-)
-
Do you drive an automatic transmission or standard? Mine is standard....I would count that as exercise because you have to use tow hands and two feet!
-
If we are counting driving then I am racking up lots of exercise this summer!
I did actually swim 1/2 mile today. Unfortunately, my shoulder really bothered me. -
Sorry to hear about your shoulder, Ginger. I'm admiring your 1/2 mile swim. Very impressive to me.
It's agreed, then. Driving counts as exercise. -
Oh boy!! If driving is exercise I will be really buff by the time I finish this move. It's 70 miles each way! Maybe I should only count half, since I have an automatic transmission.

This is my first post to this website. I am facing my third cancer diagnosis, and will be having a mastectomy in a few weeks. I am trying to decide on whether or not to go through reconstruction, with much depending on how mobile and athletic I can still remain following reconstruction using expanders followed by insert. I am wondering if anyone can provide guidance on impacts on strength, ability to exercise or use shoulder and upper arm muscles as a result of reconstruction with expander under the pectoral muscle
-
Welcome Rhea, I'm sorry to hear your news. I wish you the best, truly.
You may want to start a new topic to make sure that as many people as possible can see it. There are plenty of ladies with experience. I do recall seeing one topic you may want to search for: "Beware-Athletes Who Choose Reconstruction May Regret It" -
Thank you so much for referring me to the topic for athletes. It is so relevant and helpful. I so appreciate the support and help of this website I only just discovered.
-
Curveball, just the lifting you do is exercise enough.
Rhody, unfortunately, I have an automatic. But I figure if I move my feet alot while driving, that makes up for it.
Rhea. Welcome. Glad you got the answers you needed. How people react to implants is dependent on the person. I did not do well. Thanks to a very good physical therapist who did deep muscle work and myofascial release, I'm in a lot less pain now.
Today is another cool day here in DC, thank goodness, and being at work means I am getting more walking in going to and from the subway.
-
Today was beautiful! I am getting on a plane in the morning to head to South Carolina for a week with our church youth group. Will most likely be unplugged...
-
Today I walked about a mile at lunch. The weather is quite pleasant here right now. I have to do some wellness activities to earn cash for my health insurance HSA so I signed up for an online exercise program. Tracking, logging, journaling and setting goals. Can't do much in the strength-training department yet, but can certainly get the feet moving!
-
Ginger. Have a wonderful trip.
Rhody, you go, girl.
Today was a medical day for me so got in much more walking.
