Here is the report i got today on Mom
I did get a copy of the report from the pathologist from the day of surgery and this is what it said. Maybe someone here can help me decipher it.
Diagnosis:
1: Right breast sentinel lymph node: single lymph node showing reactive changes with no evidence of malignancy.
2: Right Breast Mass: Invasive Mucinous Carcinoma
3: Right Breast Cancer, additional margins: no evidence of malignancy.
The doc said the margins where free so that is a good thing.
Here is the tumor evaluation:
A-tumor type: invasive mucinous carcinoma, no in-situ component is seen
B-Histologic grade: grade 1 out of 3 (well-differentiated based on following scores:
Tubular formation: score 2 out of 3
Nuclear grade: Grade 1 out of 3
Mitotic index: score 1 out of 3
C-tumor size :2.4 CM in largest diameter
D-margin of resection: free of malignancy
E-Desmoplastic reaction: absent
F-tumor necrosis: absent
G-momonuclear cell infiltrate: absent
H- angialymphatic involvement: identified in focal area
L-estrogen and progesterone receptors, her-2 over expression, dna indes/ploidy studies are pending.
So far, I think this looks pretty good. But I dont really have a good understanding but a 1 out of a 3 cant be bad right?
Hopefully, next week we will get the results we really need to know what treatment she needs.
Sorry to type all this out I was hoping it might look familiar to some of you. I dont really know what this invasive mucinous carcinoma is or how it rates compared to any other sort of breast cancer.
Thanks,
Birdee

This doesn't look too bad Birdee
grade 1 slow growing? I think (invasive mucinous carcinoma) er/pr pos her2nu pos
so she will maybe need to do herceptan (sp)
2.4cm my sis's was 3.7 so thats not way big and good news
no necrosis (dead tissue or cells) good news again
clean margins woo-hoo to that and neg. nodes
The her2 is not the greatest news but with the new drug
herceptan (sp) it is not as scary as it once was.
I hope one of the other ladies will be by to help as I could only pick out some of it that I know about
but all and all this sounds not so awful
( if having any BC can be not awful)

You have a small, slow-growing mass that's not very aggressive, clean margins and clean nodes??? YOWZA!!! Mom is doing very well indeed! Congratulations!
-
jgr,
You are one of the people I was hoping would see this
She is good at helping decifering this stuff Birdee

Birdeee,
You should throw a big party for your mom! Everything in her path reports does look good. Mucinous carcinoma is also called colloid carcinoma, it is a rare breast cancer formed by the mucus-producing cancer cells. Women with mucinous carcinoma generally have a better prognosis (expected outcome) than women with more common types of invasive carcinoma. No positive nodes and clear margins, grade 1 out of 3, you can't ask for more! -

Dr. Google is my friend! (What ever did we do before the days of instant access to information???) -
You are all great!!
Thank you so much for putting my mind at ease!
Now we just wait to find out the ER PR HER stuff and we will be on our way...thanks again!!

Birdee there are many things that are good news.
-margin of resection: free of malignancy
E-Desmoplastic reaction: absent
F-tumor necrosis: absent
G-momonuclear cell infiltrate: absent
Her SNB sounds good too. Sounds like a great outcome so far! Tell her it is good news. -
Birdee,
What a great daughter you are to post for your mom. When she's up to it, have here come visit this website. It's the best place for support!

The good thing is it is low grade-not fast growing.
The size and number of nodes make her at least stage three. She would be stage four if you get evidence of distant spread(ie to her bones, lungs or liver).
The receptor status is not completed yet. At her age she will most likely be pos for ER/PR which would make her eligible for the hormonal tharapies. Usually the low grade tumors are not Her2+ which is also good.
Her plan will depend on the final staging which you will know after scans and tests are completed. Chemo and rads are usually offered for this stage but if she is not well otherwise sometimes chemo is not possible.
Wait for more info and it does get easier once you have a plan.
Fists up! -
Bone scan and pet scan show hot spots on spine and pelvis, both sides. They tried to do a bone marrow biopsy, but the dr. couldn't get the needle to penetrate her bone. He said that she had the hardest bones he's every ecountered! Harder than any woman, especially one with bone mets, and probably harder than most of the men he's dealt with. Is that a good thing? She is 73yo and not on any medications for anything, no heart problems, no blood pressure or diabetes, only this !@##@# breast cancer. I too have had a mastectomy, back in '97, so far so good, but am finding myself feeling aches and pains in my hips and collar bone and am wondering if this is just sympathy pains for my mom??
