Exercise - Working Back to it After or During Treatment

Martha, if you have a smartphone you may not need a pedometer. You can download apps that use GPS to keep up with your steps. I use the Nike Running app on my iPhone. I am NOT a runner, but I use the app for walking, light jogging, anything that involves more than a few steps. Not only does it motivate me, (one option is to hear athletic stars cheering you on, if you choose the audio function) I can keep track of my weekly exercise, which helps me see how my treatment or disease is affecting my stamina. Nothing wrong with pedometers, just one less thing to buy.
Keep up those baby steps everyone. Every little bit of movement in this heat is a giant leap in terms of exercise and something healthy we can do for our bodies, which need TLC. -
Hi gritgirl
I'm back from a lovely relaxing holiday. Had lots of exercise you will pleased to here. I was surprised how much energy I could muster. I think it was because I was less stressed and switched off or a while. Now we are still in a heat wave so exercise limited at the moment.
Hope you had good vacation. Special

Curveball. Hope your ct results were OK.
Suerabs. Mowing is a lot of work.
Mara. Welcome back. Glad you're back.
Tarheel. I got a smartphone to use mapmyrun and then got a fit bit pedometer instead. Today got my steps in and no more. Works for me. :-) -
@ gritgirl, yes they were!! I was nervous because I got the blood test results before I talked to the doctor, and my tumor markers were up, but the scan report says my mets have been STABLE since the previous scan in May. I'm doing the happy dance!
-
Oh, curveball, that is wonderful.
-
Love to hear about stable results, curveball. /cheers, applause, corks popping/
Gritgirl, hooray for the steps. Is it any cooler there?
This week has been unusually breezy for Florida, so the heat has been tolerable for walking around. (Or sitting on a beach lounger, watching other people exercise. :-) -
Tarheel, I don't have a smart phone but that's a great idea. I need an upgrade, my current phone is ready to go to phone heaven. I will have time tomorrow between scans so maybe I will go to the Verizon store....I've been thinking of getting one, this is just one more reason. Thanks!
-
Awesome curveball!! It's finally cooled down here enough to open the windows. Slept pretty good last night. Off to fight the weeds and trimmer today. Everyone have a great day!
-
A wonderfully cool day here, to answer your question Tarheel. :-) It's in the 80's today and we're all acting like it's freezing here.
Today is a big walking day for me. PT appointment in morning that I walked back from and then off for some laser hair removal. Yes, ladies, I'm hairy. My goal is to remove almost all my body hair, except for the hair on my head. That I want down to my butt, especially after having lost all of it during chemo. :-)
-
Gritgirl, have you had laser sessions yet or just starting? Wish I could do that! My fave side effect of radiation is having a left underarm that was radiated, so part of it never grows hair. I'm of Irish descent, so I'm never far from a razor or waxing salon.
Happy to hear about the "cold spell" in DC -
Michelle. Been working on it for a while. Had my underarms done first. Then my chin--I had extra hairs and joked that I had no one to pluck them if I couldn't. Now having my upper lip done. It's not perfect (I have one hair we missed on the chin), but it's moving me from sasquatch level to maybe Chihuahua. Hurts a little but not too bad.
-
Hi gritgirl
Mara
Thanks for the welcome home.
I am also suffering with facial hair it drives me mad, like Tarheel I am also part Irish so plenty of it to get rid off.
Exercise wise my 6 year old grandson arrives today so that's means plenty of movement and beach visits.
It's cooler here so I am glad it's a little cooler for you all.> -
Being Irish means being hairy? Never heard that one before.
-
Much cooler here in PA too. This is my kind of weather! We have our annual Regatta tomorrow so I will be doing a fair amount of walking. Hope the rain holds off!
-
Rhody. Hope the regatta was fun.
Things are heating up here again.
Very low key weekend. I tend not to walk much on the weekend. Just been cleaning house a bit and relaxing. -
Cut the lawn again; I swear I have never seen the grass grow so quickly!
My arms feel like they are ready to fall off. But at least it was in the 80's and not the 90's and humid.
We did some college shopping with DD so I got in some walking at Target too. Not particularly fast but it's something. -
Finally got out to walk, but not until about 8:30 tonight - hopefully I did not provide a feast for the mosquitoes! DD is still struggling with the tonsil surgery aftermath so DH watched a movie with her to keep her occupied while I walked. You would think we were dealing with a toddler, not a 24 year-old, lol!
-
Ginger, mowing the lawn is hard exercise.
Specialk, good for you on the walk.
Another low exercise day for me. I did get my nails done. Does lifting your feet in and out of pedi bath count? -
Gritgirl, it does count. Plus, when you have to hold your leg straight out for a few secs while they slip the sandal over your toes, that's a muscle building move right there.
Good for you for giving your nails the love they deserve.
It's pouring rain in NC. I managed my weekly walk/jog today between flash floods. I'm really wheezing and tried using my rescue inhaler but it did not really help. I have trouble getting the med in my lungs. Ends up on my tongue.
Ginger, I admire your grass cutting tenacity!
Good luck this week everyone with finding time and energy to move about. -
Just a little swimming today and then DD and I went to see The Beach Boys in concert. It was a blast!
-
Hi gritgirl
Morning everyone
I was right 6 year grandson worn us all out both physically and brain stretching. Great fun though back to usually exercises tomorrow.
Weather cooler today hope you are all a little cooler over there.
Mara -
Hoping to get out and walk today. It has been very hot and rainy since we got back from vacation, hard to get the walk in! I have a treadmill in the garage and I am considering asking DH to bring it into the house just so I can walk without going outside.
gritgirl - yes the pedicure counts!
ginger - I saw the Beach Boys in concert several years ago - being a California girl (of a certain age, lol!) it brought back a lot of memories. Glad you had fun!
tarheelmichelle - I have trouble with getting the inhaler past spraying in my mouth so I use a spacer. You spray the inhaler into the spacer and then inhale it afterward. It works better for me. Here is a link:
-
I certainly got my workout at our Regatta! My hubby was elected to cook corn and crab legs. I thought that's all we were doing. Dinner started at 4, and as of 3:30 no one was doing anything. So we had to step up and do the whole dinner.....96 people! YIKES!! I WAY overdid it and now I'm paying the price. Boy was I mad! If you want something done, ask a woman!
-
Rhody-that is crazy; I would not know how to cook for that many people.
SpecialK- it was a lot of fun.
Tarheel- a spacer should definitely help with the inhaler.
Gritgirl- I may have to try the pedi exercise tomorrow. These toes need help 😞 -
So many responses.
Rhody. Take it easy. Your body needs to heal.
Specialk. Good idea on the spacer.
Mara, I run after dogs myself.
Ginger. I recommend the pedi lifts, as tarheel has dubbed them.
Today got my steps in. Luckily we are still in the 80's -
Thank you for the spacer recommendations, everyone, especially SpecialK. I don't like the way I sound when I exert myself, like some horror movie monster. ( hunhhhhhh.....unhhhhhhhh ..... "eek! run for your lives!")
Gritgirl, hope those temperatures stay tolerable so you can keep stepping without melting into a puddle.
Rhody, you are superwoman! I hope you received lots of thanks and compliments from the 96 people who were treated to dinner cooked by Chef Rhody.
How's everyone else? How about you lurkers? Don't be all eyes and no fingers. Give your keyboard a workout and share your exercise accomplishments or aspirations. (As I share my respirations :-) -
I love the idea. Exercise with your fingers. Great idea, Tarheel. Everything counts in this group. :-)
-
Hi gritgirl
I am dog sitting today so hopefully being on the end of a lead will ad to my exercise regime
Rhodymmm did you catch and
cook all the crab legs yourself question what is com?
Mara -
Great idea Michelle! So far just work today. More mental exercise at times than physical. But really need to change my physical interaction. Weather here in Midwest very odd. Almost a coldness went through last week and uncommonly cool this week. So no reason to not get out and DO something! Thanks for the motivation.
-
Mara. His did the dog walk go?
Strange sounding weather, Suerab. It's still in the 80's here, thank goodness. Got my walking in and got out to do weeding. Praying the weather stays this way.
