My Dad grows sprouts (all kinds) and he just let me sample some of his broccoli sprouts last week. They were delicious. We had them on a sandwich in place of lettuce. You can also sprinkle them in a salad. He ordered the seeds online (not sure where) and they grow in a couple days in a jar in the dark...I am going to try to grow them myself

I can't find fresh broccoli sprouts in any of my grocery stores. Do they come in a bag, or out there with the other veggies? I can find frozen but I think fresh tastes better.

Speaking of green tea, I bought some and it tasted like nothing, so I went out to find another kind. It must have been one of my daffy days, because now I have two boxes collecting dust of exactly the same brand. I think I should import it from Japan.

That probably happened on the same day I was in the store for only 5 mins and came out and thought someone stole my car.

Sierra - Green Tea tastes yucky BUT you can get Green Tea Extract and put two dropper fulls into a glass of ice water and it tastes just like iced tea - AND it's actually more effective from what I've read!

Cranberry's Phytonutrients Help Shut Down Human Breast Cancer Cells

Enjoying a handful of dried cranberries in your spinach salad or a daily glass of cranberry juice with a meal may be a delicious way to help protect yourself against breast cancer. In laboratory studies published in the December 2005 issue of Cancer Letters, cranberry phytonutrients greatly inhibited proliferation of human breast cancer cells, both by causing the cancer cells to commit suicide and by shutting down their ability to multiply by stopping their process of cellular replication before its completion.

After just 4 hours' exposure to cranberry phytochemical extracts at the low dose of just 50 milligrams per mililiter, the ratio of breast cancer cells committing suicide to total cells increased 25% compared to control cells not exposed to cranberry phytonutrients. Cranberry phytonutrient extracts at doses from 10 to 50 milligrams per milliliter were also highly effective in stopping breast cancer cells from multiplying. After 24 hours, cancer cell replication was 6 times higher in the control breast cancer cells than in those exposed to cranberry extracts.

Rosemary, thanks again for the great link and something to think about on Cranberries. I found this other site on Cranberries and other healthy foods.
    http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=145

If you look down the page a little it says about the same thing the other article on Cranberries did for Breast Cancer. It can't hurt to eat them, they taste good and if you get added benifits too..that's great!

    Thanks!

Thanks for all these good ideas. Was just reading a magazine article today on preventing breast cancer and they mentioned the tumeric which is in curry (I love curried anything!); also the olive oil, fruits and veggies. It seems like we could go a long way to preventing a lot of other health problems as well, eating more of these healthy foods.

Back to drinking green tea again:

Epidemiological studies have linked green tea consumption to a reduced recurrence of early breast cancers. This proposal will bridge molecular and nutritional expertise to discover new strategies that may block constitutive Wnt signaling and delay mammary tumorigenesis. The focus of this application is an investigation of the green tea phytonutrient EGCG [(-) epigallo-catechin gallate] in suppressing proliferation and invasiveness in early breast cancer. Our preliminary results indicate that EGCG is efficient at suppressing Wnt signaling by inducing the HBP1 transcriptional repressor, which is an inhibitor of Wnt signaling. The molecular basis for suppression of Wnt signaling will be further defined in cell- and animal-based models of Wnt signaling. In cell-based studies, the involvement of Wnt signaling in breast cell invasiveness will be addressed.

It's a govt site so it might fill very sloooowly:

I've read that flaxseed isn't good for ER+ breast cancer.

They haven't done enough human studies on flax to know for sure. Using mice, it looks good for both types of tumors. There was a thread started here before and I couldn't find anything but positive research news for both types of tumors but they were animal studies.

In one human study, taking 3 tbls of ground flaxseed daily halted the growth of the tumor till it was excised. That is old news. They have one human study ongoing now to see if it will prevent BC. I guess that's better then nothing.

curezone highly recommends flaxseed and cottage cheese.

It will be almost impossible to find "real" studies done that the pharmaceuticals don't have their hands into.

But let me just say that cansema has cured my skin cancer, my doctors, my bosses, a friend, and the pharmaceuticals have put in on "quackwatch". Don't trust studies done by our current Big pharma...PLEASE. Listen to people who have been helped instead.

I know there has been a cure for aids and many cancers since the 1990's and there are 14 patents on the devices designed by bob beck. They talk about it more on the www.althealthtalk.com forum

You will NEVER see an herb or supplement approved by FDA because they can not be patented. It costs 500 Million to get a drug FDA approved and only rich pharmaceuticals can afford it.

Go figure cheap gelatin capsules have helped thousands of people for arthritis and it only costs $5.00 per bottle. Yet it's kept quiet because there's only money is pain meds that are FDA approved.

If you think the FDA is always on your side, think again. Tobacco kills tons of people everyday as a result of cancer and if they were so concerned about our health and wellbeing, it would be pulled off the shelf immediately. Instead, this billion dollar industry is keeping people addicted so they keep feeding the greedy.

The books that were an eye opener for me was Cancer-step outside the box, and how Dr. Lorraine healed her breast cancer naturally. You should check out her story. It's really amazing. She was brain washed too until her eyes were opened.

Chemo will kill most everyone and only 3% survive. Yet if you get alternative treatment first, 95% success rate has been shown.

My oh my, where do we find these crackpots? You sound just like other people who come to this site to sell their miracle cures.

First of all, please show me the statistics where there is a cure for aids and many other cancers in the 1990's!! If there was a cure - why are so many people dying from it? Cause they didnt buy your product. Thats just a crock of bull.

Chemo kills almost everyone? Now where are those statistics. And only 3% survive?

Look, I support anyones treatment choices. I think combining conventional with alternative treatment is good. But I just cant stand by and have someone selling miracle cures quoting ridiculous statistics.

I am interested in foods that help to prevent cancer.

Yep, another person just put on ignore.

I was just going to come in here and ask if anyone was familiar with agaricus (white button mushroom) as a chemopreventative and here you are with the same page I found. It seems to work in the same was Tamoxifen does in terms of estrogen suppression and also contains conjugated linoleic acid, an estrogen formation suppressor. I actually do know a bc patient who was diagnosed very young (31) with a very agressive tumor, given a year to live and is still here (not in great shape right now but living longer than she expected), and thinks her suvival is largely due to consuming this stuff. I'm very interested in it. Is anyone taking it? I only found this thread by doing a search on the word "mushroom" - nothing turned up in a search for the species of mushroom involved but I will look in Alternative Therapies or whatever it's called to see if there is any mention of it there. Thanks for posting that, Rosemary.

    34A,

Here's a list of fruits, and other foods that fight cancer. Even though it's a prostate cancer research site, it has a lot of food advice that is good for BC too. One that comes to mind is ellagic acid from raspberry seeds. You may want to read up on that for your friend.

    http://www.prostatecanceralternatives.co...agic%20Acid.htm

Pomegranate juice and pomegranate wine are also said to be tumor fighters. Good luck with your search.

More on cranberries and citrus fruits:

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query...l=pubmed_DocSum

Overall, the glycosylated flavonoids (i.e., naringin, a constituent of citrus fruits, and rutin, a constituent of cranberries) induced the greatest response to treatment at the lowest concentration in MDA human breast cancer cells. Inhibition of VEGF release by flavonoids, tocopherols, and lovastatin in these models of neoplastic cells suggests a novel mechanism for mammary cancer prevention.

The response above yours likens the action of mushrooms more to that of the AIs than tamox. I just wonder if someone on an AI should supplement with mushrooms dietary or concentrate? After Edge's comments on garlic and Femara I am dubious. I also would wonder about cranberries. The problem is that the ER+ woman is now on a estrogen inhibitors for perhaps 10 years and doesn't know which ither food and supplements might help or hinder.Beth

I hope by now the author of the story found out that grapefruit is off her list of foods to eat, it interferes with too many drugs.

I think many people don't realise that Green tea should never be made with boiling water, and that only a few leaves are needed. It can be helped by adding lemon.
