I'm getting ready to start on a ketogenic diet tomorrow. I'm a little bit nervous about it, but overall I feel pretty good about the decision. I already fast before each chemo, and this diet essentially does the same thing, but on a daily basis instead of just 48-72 hours. Anyone else doing this? I've had so much success with the fasting that I feel like this is really promising. It's also backed by some pretty solid scientific evidence. Also still diong my ground flaxseed every day. My last PET scan showed that my bones are clean! It also showed that my lymph nodes are normal, and all but a tiny bit of my primary tumor is gone, along with some "residual soft tissue swelling." I'm pretty happy about it. It's definitely not fun, but I would recommend at least reading Dr. Longo's animal trial results on fasting. I can post the link if anyone wants it... reading the results of just that one trial was enough for me to want to give it a shot. It's  http://bms.ucsf.edu/sites/ucsf-bms.ixm.ca/files/20120426.qi_.jenny__0.pdf . Very good stuff. I'm also getting ready to start taking curcumin supplements. Anyway, I can keep you all updated if this kertogenic diet works out... and I would absolutely appreciate any info from anyone else doing this. Thanks ladies!

    Hi cburke51986,

I am happy to hear that your test results are looking much better. Keep up the good work!

I was diagnosed with IDC last December and I follow some of your holistic foods such as tea with tumeric, fresh ginger, cinnamon, some rosemary, basil and after boiling them I add green tea made in japan at the end to simmer a few minutes. I also used to eat fresh garlic before I was diagnosed. I still do but only 1 or 2 cloves. Have you started Curcumin supplements? I am thinking to add this to my diet but I am still not sure if it interacts with Tamoxifen I am taking. Make sure your curcumin has bioperine which has black pepper in it. Please let us know how your new diet is working and share with us anything new you are doing.

How can we get hold of this kind of cannabis?

@Lily55, it depends on where you live. Some states in the US have legalized marijuana for medical use, and a few (including the one I live in) have legalized it for recreational use by adults. Possession, sale & use are still crimes under (US) federal law. But don't I recall that you live somewhere in Europe (or do I have you confused with another bco member)? I think the only way for you to find out if you can legally get cannabis for medicinal use would be to ask your doctor, or a lawyer who is licensed to practice where you live. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Does anyone know of a healthy way to replenish electrolytes during chemo ( i.e., not Gatorade)?

    Awesome thread!

First, cannabis and hemp are two different things. Both are very good for you but the cannabis in particular will seek and destroy cancer cells. You do need a prescription for cannabis but being a cancer patient that part is just a matter of finding a cannabis doc. They are everywhere so just look. There are many cases where cannabis oil has been the only tx taken and the cancer has been eradicated from the patients body. I have a FB page called Cupcake Warrior that has info. My brother has a page too, Kanaba. He's the one who researches this info for me every single day. I take a maintenence dose of cannabis oil that he makes for me. He also knows how to sniff out the not so reliable sources of info because he knows this plant like the back of his hand. The best way to consume cannabis and not get the high is to juice it raw. Heating it is what causes the high so if you don't heat it you get the best of the plant. There are many different strains of cannabis but the one's that are the most beneficial for cancer patients are the strains that are high in CBD. It is mainly the strains with high THC that will get you high as well.

I had traditional neo-adj chemo, surgery, radiation. It was what I thought was the best at the time. While I have been very lucky to have not have some of the horrible side effects of all this tx I do wish I would have known more and been able to make are more confident decision regarding my medical care. I do still suffer from side effects from the chemo (peri menopausal along with the typical hot flashes, fatigue, insomnia, depression) and radiation (I have to start recon all over again with a LD flap bc the radiation fried my tissues and I had to remove the TE and let my body heal), but I know that with changing my diet and adding raw supplements as well as the cannabis my side effects have been kept to a minimum.

I have become a HUGE supporter of cannabis for healthy living, not just cancer tx. It is a natural plant that provides everything we need to be healthy as well as a means of making many of the everyday things we use. It's amazing what this plant can do. Added to the turmeric, garlic, flax, chia, hemp, water, green tea, and other natural remedies cancer doesn't stand a chance and you won't have to put all that poison in your body. Good luck to all who are having to go through tx. One way or another you will get through it, just stay positive!

Re: electrolytes: eat bananas! if you use table salt you can buy a type that cuts the sodium and replaces it with potassium. If you google, you can find a list of foods that are high in potassium, such as tomato juice.

    Also, here's a random article I found:

Question: does pickled cabbage (i.e., sauerkraut, kimchee, etc.) have the same benefits as raw/cooked cabbage?

    Hi Selena,

I have often wondered about the benefits of sauerkraut. In Germany where they eat tons of it, you would think breast cancer risk would be low since cabbage is good for us. I was curious so I googled world breast cancer statistics. Germany's rate is 81.8 per 100,000, Canada 83.2 and the U.S. 76.0. The highest is Belgium at 109.2.

Yikes, just took a look at France where they enjoy their glass of wine....third from the top!

Re curcumin, it seems to help tamoxifen work better from what I've read.  Especially makes cancer resistant tamoxifen cells more sensitive. Google and choose some scholarly articles and read what you find--there's too much to select from to link here.

Don't forget high doses of Broccoli Sprouts (Sulfuraphane).  I took 1500 mg. of broccoli sprouts and 1500 mg. of Turmeric (Curcumin), and lots of raw cannabis  every day to successfully treat my stage 2b breast cancer.  I now take a maintanence dose of each to keep the big C away.  Google "University of Michigan and cancer stem cells...there is an excellent article on cancer stem cells and how chomotherapy does not even touch the stem cells.  They are the reason the cancer comes back in time.  They recommend broccoli sprouts and tumeric.  Check it out!!

    Joeybirdie,

Where do you get your supplements?  Also, I was under the impression that tumeric was not absorbed by the body unless it was accompanied by black pepper.  Does your supplement include black pepper?

    Thanks,

    Lisa

Google bcm95 curcumin. This is what your curcumin bottle needs to say on label. Is rapidly absorbed

Great thread!  Anyone familiar with Kris Carr?  A friend introduced me to her.  She has some really great recipes and "living a healthy life in general" ideas.  I just like her humor and outlook on life. :)

She has a rare non-aggressive Stage IV cancer that she has lived with for over 10 years.  Getting the cancer diagnosis led her to reevaluate her life and led her on a healthier path of living in general.

I've lazily done the "healthy eating/exercising" a lot of my adult life.  Stepped it up ironically right before my BC diagnosis 3 years ago.   Started to get back into some lazy habits after everything blew over.  Then had another cancer scare (ovary this time - luckily benign!) , which has since slapped me in the face and inspired me to really be serious about doing my body right.

I'm doing "Garden of Life" protein smoothies with fresh fruits, coconut milk and usually kale.  Consuming a variety of veggies - focusing on the "anti cancer" biggies.  Trying to cut out processed foods, sugar, white flour 90% of the time.  Trying to eat organic most of the time.  Take most of the supplements others have mentioned in this thread.  I try not to beat myself up if I slip once in awhile.  I notice the better I eat, the worse "bad" food tastes (way too salty/sweet) and I'll tend to only eat a little bit instead of pig out on it.

Took up jogging last February (surprisingly love it) and am focusing on getting consistent exercise in.

Both my NO and MO said the best thing we can do ourselves to prevent recurrence is to eat healthy and exercise.  Not that it's a guarantee (what is?!?) ..but it certainly can't hurt and you feel a hell of a lot better!

I am about 2 1/2 years into the 5 year Tamoxifen sentence.  I'd really like to quit taking it. ( I swear it made the abnormal changes in my ovary) but then think I should just finish up the five years for good measure? Sigh.

I dont care for chris karr. I researched her some. I think she is just cashing in on her cancer dx. But a lot of people do.

I follow the life over cancer by dr block. Basically a vegan diet with deep water fish diet. Having grilled london broil on salad tonight. Just have to say fuck it sometimes.
