Rhody- funny story! We make fun of out GPS too. Naragansett is pretty too; have fun!

Gritgirl- I am having summer envy too! DH had shoulder surgery so we are not having much summer fun.

Gritgirl, tetanus shots hurt! Especially the new ones that came out a few years ago.. Feels like you got punched in the arm! One secret (although it's too late for you) is to make sure that your arm muscle is totally relaxed.....not so easy to do if you don't like needles! But good for you for getting it updated!

Back in the exercise saddle today....we don't get lazy on vacation! Rode our bikes to the beach, 2.7 miles each way. Did a little beach walking too, but did not want to overdo it on the first day. We'll see how I feel tomorrow! Relaxing now and getting ready for a seafood dinner.....steamed clams and grilled swordfish--MMMMMMM! (and my brother is bringing the wine Wink). We will go to Block Island (about 45 minutes off the coast) sometime this week--probably better to go later in the week so I can build up my biking endurance--there are some pretty big hills over there--but the best beach in New England (they call it the Bermuda of the North).

Geez, Rhody. Now I'm really jealous. I usually get more exercise on vacation.

Today I actually got out of the house. Grocery and pet food shopping. Plus, some walking. Feel like I just ran a marathon.

Swam at the lake today and I think I am up to a quarter mile.

Rhody- I love Block Island. Have not been there in years. Took my DH there for our 15th anniversary 10 years ago and we stayed up on the hill at the Spring House. Great place to have a drink sitting on the lawn in adirondack chairs looking over the water. We biked all over the island. Have fun!

gritgirl, I had to smile at your marathon mention. My husband is training for the NY marathon, and I attended his first training meeting today, out of curiousity. He'll be running about 40 miles a week to train. Me, I get tired just thinking about running 1.75 miles. which is all I could do in today's 86 degree heat.

applause for your mega-walking and Rhody and Ginger's biking and swimming. yay!!!!! Who else is getting out and about this week??

Got my steps in today, but nothing more. Hotter than Hell in DC.

Really hot here too! Did some mall walking but at a pretty leisurely pace. And definitely more costly than walking at Lowes but DD is the proud owner of some new sneakers...

I loved the times I got to cycle on Block Island!!  I thought a major accomplishment doing ~20 rolling miles, but am now a much better cyclist.  Great views, and a fun time.  We always stopped for ice cream and a swim prior to heading for the ferry back to Point Judith.

Then clams and beers prior to driving back to the NY metro area.

    A perfect summer weekend day.

Just the most glorious weather here in Seattle.  I feel almost guilty enjoying it.  Did the cycling and clams idea about 10 days ago.  The greatest fun and the perfect end to a long training ride.

Ginger. I need to do mall walking. It's too dang hot here.  Get walking in everyday going to and from work (I take the subway), but then I am drenched wherever I go.

Claire, that sounds lovely, that bike ride.

gritgirl, I really think I know how you feel, when you WANT to exercise, do something, but it's so stifling outside. I'm headed to Florida next week, and I am changing my run day so I can run here in NC -- no way I can do it in FL. I lived there before, and July was pure misery even when I was in my 20s. I hate feeling so enslaved by the weather. I gotta walk a few blocks to the drugstore today to pick up my meds (starting Tamox) and I'm trying to think of which streets will be shadiest. It's "only" going to be 90.

Hope everyone is able to find a little shade today!

Yesterday I push mowed half the lawn but after an hour I had to give up. It was so hot I was ready to pass out. Supposed to finish it today. We'll see...

Claire in Seattle, we have a rule that when we are in Rhode Island we have to eat clams every day....usually more that one variety. And of course "beeyahs" to wash them down. Usually we go around the island but I was definitely not up to it this year. The hill up to Southeast Light is a killer on a good day. We did go back over today. Between the ride from Point Judith to the ferry and back, and then out to the beach and to The Oar for lunch probably totalled 10 miles. We biked every day at between 5 and 10 miles I must admit that I am beat. It was really hot and I definitely overdid it....my drain is still putting out quite a bit but it seems to finally be slowing down. But love it here in RI--back to Pittsburgh tomorrow Frown

Rhody. Sounds like a wonder vacation.

Another her, hot, hot day here. Another medical day though so got walking in. I'm home, showered, and drying off.

Sounds like many are on vacation. Both Mara and Specialk are. I'm sure they're both getting lots of exercise where they are. :-)

Rhody- wow, you had a drain and went on vacation and biked? I am impressed! Glad you had fun; I hope you can rest and lose the drain soon!

Finished cutting the lawn in the heat yesterday. Today we have been getting ready for DD graduation from high school party which is tomorrow. No time for any real exercise for me till Monday.

    Hope everyone is doing ok!

The heat continues here in DC. When will this end? The poor dogs deserve a walk.

I WAY overdid it on vacation. Probably have to go back to BS tomorrow to get the left side of my chest drained, and this morning the drain site is not looking so great. I don't know if it's infected or just  irritated from being in for two weeks. Or both. Feeling really tired and shaky this morning. After I pick up the dog from the kennel I think it's a sit on my butt kind of day to get ready for work tomorrow. But we had fun!

Ginger, good luck with the graduation party. That's exciting!

    Grit, stay cool!

Thanks Gritgirl. I actually ended up calling the surgeon on call today because it seemed like it was getting redder and more uncomfortable by the minute. She told me I could do one of two thins: start on an antibiotic and see if it gets better or go to the ER for her to take a look at it. She said most of the time it's just the body saying it's tired of having a plastic tube. I opted for the antibiotic and hopefully will get in to see the surgeon tomorrow or the next day. I did NOT want to spend hours in the ER on a Sunday afternoon (nor did I want to have to pay...I'm in a new plan year with deductibles and co-pays). So now 14 days of Keflex four times a day!

Sounds like a good idea, Martha, the antibiotics. I know my body hated the drains. Ended up with scar tissue with the drain I had the longest. Let us know how it's going.

Today is a bit cooler so got the songs out for a bit. Still would be nice if it would rain here.

Hello!  Back from vacation where exercise consisted of some shopping and throwing our bags on and off trains - which run like clockwork in Germany and Austria!  Ate too much, of course!  Now have to get busy and get back to exercise and some sensible eating.  DD (a 24 year-old baby) will have her tonsils out on Wed., so I will be somewhat housebound for the next couple of weeks.

I was fortunate enough to meet up with gritgirl, who is fabulous, in D.C. a couple of weeks ago.  We had a great dinner and conversation, the highlight on my trip north!

tarheelmichelle - it is hot as hell in FL right now - brace yourself!  Two days in a row I put on clothes to get out and walk and never made it out of the house - 95 degrees and raining, not a good time!

ginger - hello!  I know our paths have crossed on other threads, good to "see" you!

Welcome to anyone new, hope all are well!

Martha- get some rest; it sounds like your body will thank you. Hope the antibiotics help. Be careful in the sun.

Gritgirl- I just sat down after all the party cleanup and I am wiped out so you are right that I think it counts as exercise! But it was a great day with my entire family showing up. (There are 26 of us)

SpecialK- nice to see you too! Sounds like you had a great vacation. Good luck to your DD or maybe I should wish YOU the good luck. Glad you and gritgirl got together. Sounds like fun.

Martha, hoping the Keflex helps the infection. I hope the drain site looks and feels better at your follow up appt.

Ginger, congrats on hostessing a HUGE celebration.

Gritgirl, with so many humans turning to treadmills for exercise in the heat, maybe there's a treadmill gym for doggies so they can stretch their legs. ; ) jk. (Gosh that was a joke but such things probably exist.) Poor little pups, although at least they can enjoy relaxing in the A/C.

SpecialK, glad you had a nice trip. It's cool to read that some of us are getting to meet each other in the "real" world. I went to Pass-A-Grille last night to watch the sunset, and it was breezy and almost cool. I was in tears from happiness. Good luck to your DD w/ her tonsillectomy.

Since this is an exercise thread, I guess I'll have to stay off for a few days, as I have no plans to exercise on vacay. I did 1.75 run/1.25 walk on Sat. My pleural effusion is really effing up my breathing but I'm so mad about its return that I refused to cut my run short.

Wishing good health and fast healing to everyone, and endurable weather for outdoor exercise.

specialk, welcome back!  remember, we're about baby steps, so even lifting the arm to and from the table is exercise. :-)

ginger, house cleaning is very much exercise.

tarheel, is wish i had a treadmill for me and the dogs.  and i know how you feel about being ticked about not letting things stop you.

tonight the temp was down to 90 degrees and got the dogs out for a walk. went a little too far and started to feel sick. it is humid here still. we were supposed to get rain and nothing so far.  we could use the rain and lower humidity.

tarheelmichelle - you are so closeby - Pass-A-Grille is right down the road.  Be careful in the heat down here, I wish it was not so rainy but I hope you are having a nice time!

gritgirl - I need to take a whole lot of baby steps together and get out for a walk!

Tarheel, the drain site looks better. Thanks for asking. Unfortunately she would not take it out today. Not only that, she drained another 550cc from the other side and is now threatening to put another drain back in there. Ugh! But she didn't seem to think that the fluid production was related to my activity....just said to limit the upper body stuff. I asked how common the problem is and she said "there's a reason we keep this equipment in the office. " Made me feel better.

But this is an exercise thread. I walked about 1/2 mile yesterday at lunch. Trying to do more stairs at work. And when we are at our marina I do a fair bit of walking...our boat is the farthest one away from the gate. And I walk that trip 3 or 4 times a day (at least) on the weekends. I need to get a pedometer to measure the steps!

Hope everyone is a bit cooler. It's not so hot here but VERY humid. Thunderstorms right now, hope they will cool things off.

rhody, we're the baby step exercise group and when you're just out of surgery, you get to slack.

specialk, maybe you can start with walking around the house and up the stairs a few times, just to stay in the a/c.

tonight is hot but not heat wave, so actually got outside to do weeding.  been a while for that, so it's a jungle out there. if only gardens came in pristine, non weedy form.

On vacation this week. Mowed yesterday. Fought with the trimmer and weeds today. Need to get back to walking on and off the treadmill. The summer is about 2/3 over before kids go back to school and schedule gets super busy again. Hot and humid here but a break coming. Love reading about everyone's progress. Have a great night.

up the hill from free street parking to support group meeting, back to car to pick up glasses for donation which I forgot I had with me, back up to clinic for ophthalmologist appointment, back to car and home. I have another appointment tomorrow to get results of CT scan, so I will do the same tomorrow, but just once up & back. The glass is mostly gone and the items left in the storage unit won't be going to the new place until I go there myself, so I will have to think of something else to do for exercise.
