Dr. DeRisi
Hi,
I'm having a lumpectomy (DCIS, noninvasive) performed by Dr. Derisi on Long Island next week- has anyone had experiences with him??

He is well qualified. Very well qualified. No surprises. Never went for a second opinion. No complications. No re-excising. Good cosmetic result. Good luck! I wish you well.

He is probably the busiest surgeon on LI. I went to him for a second opinion after my first surgery, which did not have clean margins and showed extensive DCIS, done by general surgeon whom I'd gone to for years. Dr. Derisi recommended bilateral mx for me, which I didn't want, so I went to MSK in Manhattan, and succeeded with lumpectomies, although it took two re-excisions to get clean margins. I'm sure he is technically very strong, and many have been happy with him.

I wouldn't go to Dr. DeRisi if he was the last breast surgeon on earth, but that's not to say he isn't a good surgeon.
He performed one of my early lumpectomies. I never waited in his office less than three hours, yet he never seemed to have more than five minutes to spend with me. On my surgical follow-up, I sat in his filled waiting room for four hours. A receptionist came out periodically to tell everyone he had called an impromtu office meeting and should be done soon. When I finally did get in to see him, he took off my bandage and asked me what I was doing there since my biopsy was benign. I reminded him that he said I should come to see him one week after surgery. He shrugged and walked away!
There are plenty of good surgeons out there who have egos that aren't so inflated that they care about patients. I no longer live on Long Island, but my high risk daughter is seeing Dr. Patricia Pezzello. She actually shares an office with DeRisi -- but not the attitude.
Hope your lumpectomy went well!
Best,
Marcia

Hopeful... I have heard that some patients have had as long a wait as yours and I agree that that isn't appropriate behavior. When I scheduled my appointment, I was told to call ahead and see how he was running. I know many patients are given evening appointments because he is in surgery most days. I have cataracts and can't drive at night so I have afternoon appointments. I have never waited more than 45 minutes to see him. Furthermore, I just sent a neighbor to him who has DCIS. She and her husband visited several other doctors and decided to use Dr. Derisi. He spent close to an hour with them. She's scheduled for surgery later this week.
My dermatologist also sends her cancer patients to him because she thinks he gets excellent margins and rarely has the need for re-excision. He also favors lumpectectomy when possible. He tries to give patients as many choices as possible. I think in the long run... it's worth the wait. But I agree... patients need not wait that long!
