Five year mark - lumpectomy and no further treatment
Just wanted to share that I had my annual bi-lateral mammogram today and got the "see you in six months" news. I was diagnosed with DCIS in my left breast (very tiny 1.6 mm single focus) in July of 2008. At that time I had a lumpectomy but did no additional treatment. (This decision was made after lengthy discussion of possible radiation, but decided to forego it with radiation oncologist in agreement on the decision). The five years has not been without its "scares" - I have had one additional lumpectomy/excisional biopsy as well as a stereotactic biopsy on the left breast. Both of those showed 'benign' conditions. They are watching the left breast closely which is why I go every six months to be checked. I am fine with being watched closely though. Just wanted to share this 'five year' news. Good luck to all who are making decisions concerning DCIS.

Congratulations to you!! I love to read this kind of post especially since I am just starting my DCIS journey!! It gives me such hope. I am doing the lumpectomy/radiation/pill route and I hope I am just as successful!

proudtospin - Congratulations on your 5 year anniversary!!

Good news to all! I also just had my five year mark with a clear mammo -- I did have two lumpectomies, partial rads (3 weeks, targeted) and tamox for 3 years. I could not take any more after that -- I was literally falling asleep at red lights so stopped early. Still have scary thoughts some time about this whole past 5 years, but too busy to think too much about it right now - busy job and my son is getting married in Sept. ! Oh, I also had a year ago a skin cancer removed from my nose -- 17 stitches right up the middle. amazing job they did on putting me back together, but when I got that dx, i was like , really,,,,,,, !!!!?!!!

I am still doing the 52 week herceptin treatment. I have finished all the chemo and all the radiation. No one has said anything about having a PET Scan done. Is it always necessary or am I suppose to ask to have one done?
