So...whats for dinner?

Sorry, Eric, that sucks. And I guess that's two mechanic shops that are off your list! you're lucky you can Fix it youself. Much love.
-
Laurie, I feel your pain! I really wanted to be a smart alec and ask if you started out the day sweetly, but I know that's not the PC thing to say.... My gosh, you got all that done - and before lunch? Puts me to shame.
And Bobogirl, so sorry for the start to your day! Almost makes me want to suggest putting down a shower curtain liner on the floor and play in-door camping so less to clean up (while the mattress dries out.
Luv, hope you fare well in the heat.
Nancy, thanks! Want to try the crockpot dressing recipe too. Looks yummy!
-
Carol, contrast your temps with the ones here. This weekend, it's forecast to be 117F (near 50C).
Bobo, two beds??? and Laurie, the carpet...wow... I think I'd be more annoyed about the loss of the syrup than the need to clean the carpet! Question....If I bring some blue chalk line chalk (the kind that warns the user that there is no known way to remove the stains) for the kids, can I come over? :-)
Bobo, I read that your biopsy came back "clean"...that's a relief. I hope things are otherwise settling down for you.
Oh, the 41 miles, each way. I feel good when I can average 35mph. So, it's an hour and 10 minutes or so on the "good" days and 90 minutes on the not so good days.
As for the auto repair shops. I'm not sure about any of them any more. I don't like working on daily driver cars because I'm under pressure to "get it done now". I prefer things when I can work on it at my leisure. But, when I can, I do my own work on the theory that I don't otherwise make $95 per hour. "Car fixin" was another of the things I did to pay for college, so it's not a big deal, except that it cuts into the free time.
Speaking of car stuff. On the way home from the grocery store, the car started feeling funny. We pulled over on the side street about 500 yerds from home---bulge in the tire tread. So I'll be changing a tire before I take it to the tire store. All of the tires were within about 3 months of needing replacement anyway (70,000 miles on them).
Oh, one more thing. My new sourdough starter seems to be pretty active. I put it in a jar and "fed" it. It "barfed" all over the countertop. It was much easier to to clean than bedding or carpets, and it means that it should work well for making bread.
-
So, Eric, getting the picture of the sourdough starter barfing on the counter - too funny! So does that mean that the dogs were up on the counter licking it up? Then there'd be a big icky mess to clean.
It was nice of the car to have its problems so close to home, not en route to/from home. It this stuff has to happen, better it happen close to home (or even work). I had a brand new car (not even owned one week) literally die in the work parking lot. Good thing my manager helped me out diagnosing that it was a major problem and not to drive (officially diagnosed as "extraneous metal in the engine cell". Big whig mechanics from Toyota had to check it out since it had less than 1000 miles put on it. Refused to accept it and got a newer car out of the deal).
Bobo, that's real cleaning. It's not fake, you've working so I think you're doing a great job. Especially being summer and not having time to yourself.
Carol, envying your cool weather. Easier to put on a light sweater or jacket than living in a dry heat sauna
-
Hi everyone! We're home after our epic trip to Kansas City and Tunica - 3400 miles! I've read most everything but not trying to answer...too much to do today. Hope everyone is doing well and I'll be catching back up with you over the next few days.
-
Eric, I learned the hard way about starter. I now put mine on a plastic mat when it's out. It's hell to get that stuff out of grout.
Laurie, this is where having dogs comes in handy. That syrup would have been gone in no time without your lifting a finger. I used to never have to sweep the kitchen floor
Has anyone heard from Susan? Haven't "seen" her here in a while.
Michelle, hope tunica was kind to you lol! -
2nd, many thanks for the kind words. That shower curtain "camping" idea is a great one. I've got an extra cloth shower curtain -- an old one -- that will probably not make our move to our new house. It would be great for that.
Eric, many thanks to you also. Laughing at your blue line chalk joke! Laurie, if I bring over a pack of Sharpies, can I play with your kids?
No, wait. You already have Sharpies!Making myself laugh! Not 'turning a corner,' though. Still not eating. It's only been a week after. Another doc thinks the GYN may have punctured my uterus..
-
Bobogirl - where do you go now with that information? (((HUGZZZ))). Do something nice for yourself today.
-
Bobo yikes!
-
Bobo, I still don't know what you teach! LOL! What is critical theory? Sure hope that dr. is wrong and you don't have a punctured uterus.
Eric, my dh is a "fixer" of malfunctioning things, too. You can judge the difficulty of the job by the language! One tough job he took on a few years ago was replacing the ice-maker mechanism in our refrigerator/freezer. It had only been broken for at least 5 yrs. I just bought plastic ice trays and emptied the cubes into the ice-maker. At any rate he had enough cuss words to get the job done and the ice-maker unit is working fine!
We had planned to bike around Big Detroit Lake today but it is very windy so we drove to town and walked on the path that runs along the shoreline of the lake. Then had breakfast at Mainstreet Cafe. Then we did what all rv'ers do--shopped at Walmart.
Tonight's dinner will be a brown rice casserole that will use up leftover rice. Other ingredients: pork sausage, broccoli, mushrooms, celery, cheese, and a little chicken broth. And tossed salad with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, avocado.
Again today the a/c is resting and the windows and door are open. Wimbledon is on tv and this afternoon the women's US Open golf. There are some good young American golfers in the LPGA which in recent years has turned into the Asian Women's Tour.
Laurie and Bobo, I enjoy your escapades with your kids.
-
Michelle, if you had gone to Tunica a little earlier, we could have gotten together for a drink. We were there on the afternoon and evening of June 18th at Sam's Town Rv Park, which is very nice and charges $13 for full hookups on a paved, level site. Tunica is usually our first day's destination when we're heading north for the summer.
I've been missing Susan, too.
-
I had the sourdough starter in a plastic cup and, yes, one time, the dog managed to swipe it. Fortunately I had been making bread and could use a piece of bread to "seed" a new starter. The dog was unpleasant to be around that night and the next day. The dog would squeak and she would jump up and whirl around to try to catch what was making the noise behind her....we would all have to leave for awhile...... The EPA is probably still investigating it! :-)
Bobo, I hope you're getting that (puncture) possibility checked out. Not that I'd know, but it doesn't sound like something to not do something about.
I don't get all grumpy at the thing I'm fixing. i figure the difficulty of the fix is more the design engineer's fault than the device itself. My working my way through college fixing things has, I think, made me a better engineer because when I'm thinking of how to design something, I'm also keeping the maintenance folks' needs in mind.
Welcome back Michelle......sounds like you had a good trip...
Eric

Bobo, yikes! This run of not-so-good luck needs to stop RIGHT NOW! Calling on the Universie to send only goodness, love and positive luck in Bobo's direction NOW.
Thanks for my laughs: remembering Laurie's son and the markers (bet she didn't think it was funny). At least not permanent. Funny picture of Eric's dog! Promise not to call the EPA, hopefully it's all better now.
Hoping the rest of your Friday is wonderful all, and let me be the first to wish you all a fantastic, cool (in termperature) weekend! The closets are calling and Mom and Dad just left. Here comes the white tornado (hope that isn't politically incorrect, no offense meant, just remembering the old TV commercial)
-
Eric- You had me laughing with the image of your dog too! Hysterical!!!
Bobo- I agree- go get yourself checked and big hugs to you.
I still laugh at my son coloring his face, I even laughed when he did it. The maple syrup not so much....the kids is trouble with a capital T!! My oldest never did crap like this?! Headed to the lake for the weekend in about a 1/2 hour. The weather does not look promising but the company does. I love our friends cottage and the time we spend there. The boys are super excited. The car is all packed all I need is for DH to get home.
I agree- Susan where are you? Hope all is well.
Carol- Love following you on your trip. So glad you continue to post as you go along.
-
Carole, funny, tunica is our first days destination when we head south!
-
Well, there's nothing they do really for the uterus. I hear it 'heals itself.' I was thinking everyone was just pure crazy. But then bedo confirmed it! She said, I sure hope those dipsh*ts have not punctured your uterus. When that happens, it feels like XXX. And then I realized it is all probably true. Note I didn't believe the doctor, but then did believe it once it was confirmed by bedo...
Laurie, it is so fun to go away to a cabin. We just did it for my birthday. But wow -- so much packing. It was like we were going on an ocean voyage!
Carole, what I teach is totally not exciting. Just where a student finds herself in relation to the societal aesthetic -- how that informs her ability to 'read,' to absorb information in research, and how it would inform her commentary. And then I teach regular stuff, composition stuff. I teach and tutor test types. All of them, really, even the grad-level ones, but the LSAT. That's how I was able to raise the kids and take care of them myself -- doing that tutoring "on the side."
I admire your travels! Especially after the bum two weeks I've had. You too, Luvmygoats! Plus, I am super-excited about your goats. I am not sure if I have ever mentioned it, but I love goats very much, and I have always wanted one, always. Every time I come across one, I am just so happy.
-
Sorry for being absent but you all know why.
Tomorrow will be one month and it still hurts like hell.
(((EVERYONE)))
-
Hugs to you, Deb.
-
(((((Debore)))))
-
Ditto on the hugs to you Deb. You seem to have done so well, but anniversaries just bring all the pain into focus. Hope you are able to take good care of yourself during this difficult time. Glad you posted....Peace to you.
Also love hearing about your traveling adventures, Carole.
Happy to learn that your trip went well, Michelle, and that you are safely at home.
Had a luncheon for my substitute today with two of our colleagues. For all the prep I did, it was pretty unspectacular. Made the white gazpacho with a different recipe than last time.....and am not sure I am crazy over any of the recipes I've tried....may just enjoy this at the local restaurant where I first had it and return to making regular tomato gazpacho. Anyway, I also made chicken salad with sliced almonds, pasta salad with lots of veggies, egg salad, and fruit salad. Pretty pedestrian! But one never knows the palates of colleagues you rarely eat with, (and it was too hot to cook much!) so I played it safe. Worked out fine....
One gal brought her two little toddler girls....adorable red heads with lots of energy and curiosity. They were a riot! I'm just sorry my house was cleaned yesterday instead of tomorrow
We could have used Lacey the kiddie food catcher/cleaner upper. They were so entertaining....then they brought out the markers. Dodged a bullet there. Wondered if the white wainscoting was going to get a make-over. It didn't.
Bobo, glad to hear that your uterus will be fine. Hope you keep feeling better, faster and faster!
We head to the lake tomorrow, and hope for some sunny skies while there for several days.
Have a good weekend everyone.
Susan are you out there??? Also thinking of you.
Oh for dinner, I finished the gazpacho soup and made DH a chicken parm sandwich with the kids' tenders that my colleague left in my fridge. Had not seen Frank Purdue in my house for years. -
Awww (((Deb)))
-
Deb HUGS Look forward to more posts from you...miss you here
Debbie and Susan and all others that have been MIA Kay? I hope everyone is just having a busy and fun summer.
We are sooo stuck in a rain pattern here...my flowers are looking awesome, but i cant keep up with the lawn. And pretty much all boating has been on hold.
I have a load of kids coming for the 4th so it better clear up or the wineries are gonna have to get us our own bar stools, and we will have to settle in for the long weekend.
Had spaghetti and meatballs last night (DH request) in the summer? really? Oh well it hit the spot. Trying to hold off on groceries till I have to prepare for the children.
-
Eric95',
I'm new here. Can you tell me nowhere the recipe is for your sourdough starter? I've been thinking a lot about sourdough lately even though it's summer.
I'm out of active treatment 3 months now and learning to cook all over again (healthy).
Thanks, Peggy -
Peggy, I've been baking with sourdough for 40 years and have had to replace it for various reasons a few times. I mix together a scant cup of water and a heaping cup of flour. To give it a kick start I add 1/2 tsp yeast. Cover with cheesecloth and leave it in a warm spot in the kitchen a week or two until it starts to smell sour. You will want to have plenty of room in the container for expansion as it should at least double in volume during the process. Store in the refrigerator between uses. I keep mine in a tupperware type container at least 3 times the volume of the starter.
-
This time I took some unwashed grapes from the vine in the backyard, smashed them, added a pinch of sugar and a bit of chlorine free water....and let it set until it started getting frothy. I then added some flour and water and the stuff is bubbling like crazy.
I'm up camping where there is no cell service except when we come to town...so I haven't baked any bread with it yet. Maybe Monday....
-
oh, while the grape "juice is" working, I cover it with plastic wrap...and I strain the stuff out of the juice before I add the flour to the juice.....
almost out of coverage.
-
Peggy, glad you're feeling good enough to get back to healthy cooking after your treatment.
Eric, what an interesting process with the grapes.
We went to the farmer's market in Detroit Lakes this morning. Bought beautiful asparagus, very long spears. The grower assured me the whole spear is good to eat. Also bought new potatoes and pretty red radishes. Frozen lamb chops. Loaf of multigrain bread and a couple of cookies from a bakery called Breadsmith's out of Fargo. People line up at this tent because the bread is beautiful, all kinds, and trays of cookies and scones. Should have taken a picture with my cell phone.
Back at the rv park, I instigated a bike ride, stipulating that I did not intend to bike entirely around Big Detroit Lake, a distance of about 12 miles. It was to be a mini bike ride to start getting my legs in shape for longer rides. Well, we ended up doing the whole circle. Very nice bike path. It's the uphill grades that get me. I have a new bike that really is nice and easier to pedal than my old bike.
Lunch was sandwiches using slices of the multigrain bread.
The lamb chops are thawing. We'll have them and some of the boiled new potatoes and a salad for dinner. I should have bought some fresh dill. One farmer had a big bucket of it.
Lacey your assortment of salads sounds delicious to me. I would happily have sat at your luncheon table. I have not eaten white gazpacho. What are the ingredients?
Laurie, I think of you and your dh camping with your children as I observe all the little kids playing in the children's area across from our site. They are so cute and quite cautious of vehicles passing on the road. There are quite a few families here this weekend.
We're enjoying the Wimbledon coverage on tv.
Hugs to everyone who could use a hug.
-
I'm making "7 minute cheese and prosciutto flatbreads" tonight. Ours will be cheese/salami flatbreads. Albertsons had Havarti cheese BOGO last week so we will have havarti rather than fontina on it. Should be quick/easy and not heat the house too much though actually my oven is well insulated. Can tell it is much cooler today; AC is not on almost constantly.
Michelle - glad you had a good trip.
Deborye - Wish I was there to give you a big hug!
Missing Kay and Bedo and Debbie.
Welcome Peggy. Glad you are feeling well enough to be interested in cooking again.
Bobo - I got some new pictures of my goats but DH is the techy person. Will try when he is off Mon/Tues to get some posted. I don't think they are on an outside source but he got my avatar on. That was my Nellie one of my sweetest goats ever.
I've been exercising with Christian Fitness on CTV. I need to get my recorder going and tape Gilad and yoga. It has been out of commission for sev. years. Got a new TV and never reprogrammed it. We don't have Tivo as main TV is ancient in an entertainment center bought for it. So no HD until it dies which it shows no signs of. But I did find a Miss Marple on the VCR I recorded (in 2010 no less) but never watched. Stayed up until 1:30 but finished it.
Carole - I too travel vicariously with you and your DH.
-
Tasty and easy way to cook fish- so far great with Tilapia or Cod; get a large ziplock bag and put 1/2 cup whole wheat flour and add garlic salt, lawry's, onion powder, and any other spices you like. Shake fish in zip lock bag to coat well, then heat up a splash of olive oil, garlic and lemon juice in a frying pan and then cook each side of fish for 4-6 minutes or until meat is flaky. My whole family loves it. I usually cook up zucchini or asparagus after the fish in the same pan cuz of the favors left behind give great flavor to the veggies too! Also serve with a salad and you have a healthy meal!
-
Thank you so everyone for your hugs and prayers.
