Swimming in a Public and/or Private pool?

Options

Hi Everyone,

I am interested in hearing your opinions on swimming in public and/or private pools while you are a chemo patient?   What has your oncologist said and have you had a bad experience after swimming in a public pool?   I know about direct sunlight so would always have an umbrella - just wanted to know about being in the water or not?

Thanks so much!    Cool

My oncologist said OK to me swimming in my own pool (no kids or animals use it).  She said to avoid public pools or water parks and did not want me in the water at any beach (fresh or salt water).

My oncologist said no to pools but the beach was ok. I've asked this question before on another board and got responses ALL over the place so I really think it depends on your doctor. It's been hard to avoid pool with 2 small kids and temperatures in the 90s!!

I think it also depends on how well your white counts hold up.  Mine held up well and I was given the okay to visit a waterpark (indoor) back in April during my chemo.

Well, I decided to swim in a pool in a motel, and possibly (if I remembe right) sat in a hot tub for about 6 minutes. Not cool! Next day on way home, in car, began to get very dehydrated, like my mouth was sticking together, got home, had a temperature. when you hit 100, you go to hospital. I hit 100.(All this happened several weeks to a month after my last chemo, by the way). Nightime, winter, driving to local emerg, thinkin great I got through all that only to end up in my crummy local hospital and die! I can't remember what this condition is called...too much arimidex I guess, and it was almost 5 yrs ago.. so, get into the emerg room & onto IV, which was a huge relief, and they gave me a Tylenol and after 3-4 hours and blood tests etc my temp went down, I felt way better, and went home.

So I never had anything else like this happen in my entire life. so, my personal experience is - stay out of all public pools and especially  hot tubs - no, no, no. Toomany weird germs.
