Anyone do massages or accupuncture during chemo?? How was it? I also have a port and was wondering if that would interfere with massage. Thanks for any info!!!

I kept my port for three years after chemo was finished and had a massage every 2-3 weeks.  As long as pressure was not placed directly on the port I was fine (pressure on my back opposite the port location on the front didn't cause me any problems).

I didn't start acupuncture until recently.  Depending on the modality used, the acupuncture shouldn't cause a problem with the port.  However, my acupuncturist also uses an electrical stimulation device through the needles.  He checked very carefully about any devices containing metal in my body before starting the therapy.

The septum portion of the port may be made of either metal or have a metal strip around the septum.

In any case, I was able to have an MRI with a chemo port in place without any problem.  On the other hand, I was told no MRIs while I had my tissue expanders in place because of the metal in the access port.
