DIEP 2013

Goldie....I think Marty takes the crown, but yes, we are both mega-delayed recons, after years of implant issues. I often credit the experience of living with implant failure, replacement, capsular contracture, and pain, with giving me the perspective that lets me be so truly, deeply, and gratefully happy with this recon. Time is a great teacher! Just caught the "connection" between the picture forum and Movie's addiction!!!! Movie's gonna howl at that one!!!!!!
kuka...I am chuckling a bit....I think working with a trainer is a good path for you, I just wonder if they know what their in for!!!! Knee still feeling good, I hope??? Try massaging the sensitive tummy scar, it helps with desensitization..firmer pressure will likely be more comfortable than a light touch.
ssla.....you're likely being well cared for in NOLA's pre-op setup.
cgabby.....sleeping away, while the surgeons work their magic. Safe journey, easy healing.
kad22....thinking of you.
Damiana....have you had those first steps yet.....it gets better each time!
-
I just had to share with you guus that today is my corner turning day! Tomorrow will be two weeks post DIEP and I was able to shower without assistance today and put on makeup which is a first since surgery. I have also movd from taking the oxycodone down to the hydrocodone which dont make me feel as drugged. I still feel like Im wearing an itchy gircle and bra but is getting better!
Just a few days ago I thought Id never see normal life again and today I am well on my way to normal again. Amazing how time does heal us. Hope eveyone has a great day! -
yowza, my abdomen is so sore! I was only allowed ice chips all day yesterday until this morning. Not eating for so long ended up giving me a migraine, but this morning I had real food and feel much better. I have not been allowed out of bed yet which is making my body more stiff and sore. there is a dark corner on my flap- not sure if it is bruising or tissue that is dying. something really funny happened- I had a really ugly little flower tattoo on my abdomen- it got uglier with each of my 3 kids.....It is now where my nipple should be. It is pretty hilarious.
-
Damiana- That is so freaky! Sounds like you are doing good so far. How is your pain? They took my catheter out on the second day and thats when I was allowed to get up and walk. Speedy recovery to you!
-
Obviously, I haven't stirred myself much this morning!
sweetpickle....thanks for sharing your "timeline"!!! Great to hear you've turned that corner! I distinctly remember telling my PS on day2...."just put everything back where it was
"....so not how I feel now
!
damiana....if you're eating, I bet you'll be getting out of bed soon. Just a couple steps to a chair...but a big journey!!! I've crossed everything re: bruising vs. failure. Many of us get quite the technicolour show on the gloob.
I really have to get busy...thinking of everyone today. ((((((X))))))
-
Damiana - Love your belly/nipple tattoo story.
Your recovery is the opposite of mine. I wasn't allowed solid food for two days, but on day one I was forced to shuffle out the door with my tubes, my IV, and my cathater. Solid food came later. But on my release day, day 5, I managed to take a shower on my own. My hospital is big on excercise. I'm one week past surgery now and am feeling pretty good. This morning took a long slow walk around the block with Jim and the bassett hound - and for the first time, the dog walked ahead of me
I'm really glad to hear you're feeling better. Take all the drugs you can to control that belly pain.
-
Morning ladies! Damiana, glad to hear you are on your way! Hope your recovery goes well without bumps and you are home moving in no time. My surgery went fairly well yesterday, they ended up with a bad port and had to install another. Seriously bugs me but its in now. Hoping and praying this one doesn't fail. Had to get my TE deflated for the BS to widen the margins so now my breast looks like a wrinkled up donut! Fortunately it gets refilled Friday. Anyone have any port issues?
-
Kuka - my PS lowered my ab scar during my stage 2. I can def hide it under a bikini, though at my age a bikini might just shock my DH too much. No string bikini though.
Damiana - your tatoo may take the cake. That is just too funny. Glad you are feeling better. I imagine they are keeping you in bed to monitor that flap problem. I had a leak that caused a hematoma and was back in surgery on Day 2. I am assuming you are still hooked to doppler? How does it sound?
Sweetpickle - sounds like you are moving right along and are sort of on the same timeline I was. Hope you are taking walks - not far, but out of the house. Really will help your recovery.
-
Damiana, glad to hear you're doing good.
Nihahi, the personal trainer has no clue! He told me if I was ready to work hard. I told him we could make a bet. I'm very competitive, and I'll do whatever it takes to win and show people I can do it! But thus time I'm doing it right and without hurting myself. Since I don't start until Monday I can have icecream over the weekend, right? Lol -
Dear Lilyun, so good to hear that you are beginning to accept your son's news, and it is also wonderful that your DH is so understanding. I always maintain that nobody will choose to be gay if they have a choice, and that is why nobody should judge gay people.
Sweetpickle and Damiana, glad to hear you are doing well. That flower on the new boob is funny - PS obviously has a sense of humour - lol.
Movie, I'm thinking the same way as you re starting up my exercise program again. I'm going to give it time till next week when I'm six weeks out, and then I'm going back to the gym. Feeling way stronger at this stage than after MX surgery. The personal trainer, a cancer survivor herself, started me off then with very light weights, working it up very slowly, and I was up to 5/6 lbs before this surgery. Don't want to trigger the lymphedema beast. Seeing that that I don't spend lots of money coloring my hair every 3 weeks as I used to, I don't feel guilty at all to have a trainer. Will also start back on my run/walk regime to hopefully work up to a 5K run. I was almost there before DIEP. Now that I'm actually taking an iron supplement for my low hemoglobin, I should have the breath for that - LOL.
Dyvgirl, good to hear you're okay. Hope that fill goes well, and that you get your TE boob back. Wrinkled can't be good - lol.
Kuka, slow with that knee now. It's a marathon, remember - poor trainer will have his work cut out for him. Lol. My tummy scar is very low, and I would certainly be able to wear a bikini if I wanted to. Have not worn one since my twenties, and don't think I'm going to start at 58. Don't want the world to see what I really look like without clothes - better to keep 'em guessing!
Those in surgery today, it will be over soon, and then the healing can begin. Sweet dreams!

Lilyun
So glad you found the answer to your anxiety over your son in your heart. That is where it was all the time. It was just a matter of figuring it out, and you did. You are blessed to have such a wonderful husband to talk things over with, and you are right, blessed to have your son too.
-
Damiana
Your surgeon was very skilled to work that out...lol. I guess you can tattoo a nipple right over it!!!
Which hospital are you? I remember you told me your PS's name, but just wondered which hospital you are in since we are in the same general part of the world. Don't worry, I won't come see you....lol. The drive to Dallas is over an hour.
-
Nihani, when you had your recon did you get a flap, or were they able to just remove the implant and fill you envelope with tummy fat?
-
sweetpickle,
that is so great!!!!! Keep up the good work.
-
goldie...I had a flap. I went in hoping for a diep, but ended up a tram free muscle sparing version. My "hope" for a diep, was mainly due to fears of QOL related to muscle involvement based on "opinions" of other ladies....hasn't been an issue AT ALL for me. Boob appearance wise, imho, my tram free is identical to a diep. Because I had an implant, I had some degree of "stretched" chest skin, and some of that was utilized, but a good portion of the tummy skin was also used. The previous mx scar, implant scars and surrounding skin, had gotten caught up in the capsular contracture, so much of the stretched skin I had, was removed to release the skin/muscle issues. The flap fat, was kind of tucked around into the chest "skin", once the implant was removed. I guess I'm a "hybrid" flap appearance.....probably a cross between a skin sparing and a pure flap. Hope that answers your questions, if it doesn't....keep asking...!
-
I'm in awe of how well the most recent patients are doing! Damianna, Janet, u guys sound like you are doing awesome!
For those of you a little further out I'm thankful for your comments and to know what may or may not lay ahead for me.
I really wish there was a like button on here-so many things I'd hit for!
I went out today and did something I rarely do! I splurged on something for myself! I bought a power recliner! I went out looking for a recliner but the Leon's here had a floor model that has a power button on clearance for $80 more than the regular recliner. Regularly $879 and I got it for $379! I'm so excited as I know it will make my life easier right after surgery but I will enjoy it for many years to come.
I also picked up a power toothbrush, towelettes and a cotton sleeveless zippered robe for the hospital. I'm so ready!
Hope everyone is having a good day!
Cheers,
Sherry -
Sharon /ssla01 is up tomorrow! Thinking of you! No worries, you got this!
-
Marty- yes I am getting the doppler every 2 hours- it sounds good and strong.
Goldie- I am at Medical City. It seems to be a really good hospital- everyone I have dealt with has been great.
My pain is tolerable but man- it feels like a shark got ahold of me! One of my drains are really oozy and it is placed in a painful spot. I hope it moves around in there to a more comfy spot- it feels like it is pulling. ick! -
Thinking of those who just had surgery. I hope things are going well. I hope spirits of others are lifted up today, too. It's hard to be patient with all we have to go through.
At first I didn't want nipples, either. I don't need permanent headlights. My husband says he doesn't care but I think he would really like them. I probably will get them just to feel a little more "normal" after all this. I've been nipple-less for fifteen months. The thought of big flower tattoos is exciting, though! My daughters would be so impressed! Maybe I'll get nipples and flower tattoos, both! I have time to decide.
sbel, thanks for the assurance about no muffin top. I hope my ps laughs when I ask him, too.
Hugs to everyone, some gentler than others! -
Thanks Bailey! I had pre-op today. Surgery in the morning at 7:00. I love the idea of your pierced belly button. I don't know if I would have the nerve.
I have a bikini line tattoo also....wondering where it will end up..lol
Sharon -
ssla01, best wishes for tomorrow! I hope that bikini line tattoo ends up in an appropriate spot. Maybe you'll be sporting a rare FUPA tattoo afterwards - lol.
Sherry, good for you on treating yourself. You sound all ready to go too.
-
damiana, for the long ride home make sure you have a really nice soft pillow to put between you and the seat belt. Dallas, to Burleson is a long haul. As a matter of fact, I would ask for pain meds for the ride home. I am glad you are doing so well. Keep us all posted on your progress.
-
Ssla good luck tomorrow! I'm sure your tattoo will be just fine where ever it ends up!
I have a tattoo on my growing area and my ps left it intact. He said he didn't want to mess it up. I told him it would have been fine if he did, but I guess he wasn't going to wake me up in the middle of surgery and ask me, huh?
I did have my belly bottom pierced and with the new one the piercing it's all gone! But I do know of somebody who pierced it after she had DIEP done. So very possible. -
Ssla, it was nice meeting you today. I'm glad everything went fine with the pre op. I made it home fine, sitting in my recliner now. Let us know how things go when you feel up to it. I know your in good hands.
-
Ssla, good luck tomorrow and sweet dreams.....when you awaken you will be on the "other side".........in your pockets, and best wishes for an event-less recovery. Keep us posted as soon as you can.....we will be anxious to hear from you.
Nihahi, I already made the connection over the T-T's.....she must be an addict like I am.....so angry that I can't them in the US at a grocery store......but I CAN order them by the case.....LOL
Damiana, you sound good, and the shark bite analogy is what I thought, too, the first time I got a good look at myself post-surgery! Just remember, this too, shall pass....
Liefie, I waited until 8 weeks before I started back to the gym.....I wanted to make darn good and sure those flaps weren't going to go south on me before subjecting them to the gym!. I was lifting 12-15 lbs per arm b/4 DIEP.....won't be doing that ever again.....5-6 lbs is my limit now.
Marty, you are right.....can't hurry the healing, even when we want to!
Well, off to take an evening walk with DH......to get a frozen yogurt to go with my TimTam!
Love to all.....
Namaste and God bless - Jackie -
Pillows in the car was one of the most helpful suggestions, Im still using one for the seatbelt!
-
Thanks for all of the well wishes. Glad and thankful to have this amazing group in my pockets. I can't wait to be a veteran. Love to you all.
Sharon -
Sharon, hoping all goes well!
-
Nihani, can I ask why you couldn't have the regular diep and ended up with a hybrid of the tram flap? I think the way my PS was explaining, I too will have a combo reconstructed breast like yours. I am picturing some of the pics I have seen where there is a large eye shaped flap in the middle for the breast. At this point, I just want breast...lol.
-
Hi ladies, not looked in for a while as I had other stuff going on.
Well I made the first step towards reconstruction today: asked my BS for referral to a plastics surgeon!
I also told her I was strongly considering prophylactic mastectomy on the right with immediate recon when I get my left Mx site reconstructed. To my relief she didn't try to persuade me otherwise!
She had a feel of my right breast where I reckon new lumpies are evident and said it felt like normal breast tissue to her. My onc had agreed it was lumpy but said it felt like fibrocystic change. However, did arrange an u/s to reassure me!
I coloured my hair violet with "hair chalk" when I got home. Pretty!
This afternoon I got a call from the imaging centre to say they had a cancellation tomorrow morning, so I'll soon know for sure, but either way, I think I'll be happy to see the back of Mrs Right, as I'm now highly suspicious that she's in league with Mrs Left!!!
Feeling hopeful, but manic tonight on steroid buzz from yesterday's treatment. Next Weds is my final Taxol.
I'm moving on!!
