Hi ladies- love the conversation here about beets. I too like the beet greens! I have learned to do a greens stir fry with things like kale, chard, beet greens, etc. Little olive oil, some red pepper flakes, bit of minced garlic, salt and pepper to taste. Light saute is the best. Greens are loaded with great nutrients for your body. I put kale in my smoothies sometimes too.
Teka- I grew up in CT and we had rhubarb in our garden. We used to eat it raw as kids for a snack. I never took a liking to the strawberry rhubarb pie, but my mom made it all summer long.
Does anyone here watch The Voice? Finalist time and performances last night were so good. I think they announce the winner tonight, but going to yoga and will miss it.
Hope everyone is doing well. Hot here but no more dust storms since the weekend. I agree about the haboob sounding like a giggly word for 6th graders!
Peace and love hermits!
-
I'll be watching "The Voice" on & off during the 2 hours.
-
camillegal,
I had "complete decongestive therapy" for lymphedema by an OPT, but now only do massage & exercises at home. I hated dragging out for treatments.
-
Teka I had that a while ago, but like u I do them at home and my Katie-Kat know exactly o my arms to give a gentle massage there everyday. LOL I'm going for my back now--so this is new to me--I asked of course if this will repair it, no was the answer but it might make it feel a little beter, hahaha I can barely walk so to me I'm laughing about this, but this is part 1, I have to have.
-
Cher will be performing on the Voice so I will be watching/flipping....
-
I always liked and like Cher.
-
so am in the house again which is fine with me. Have chemo tomorrow so have to go out.... haven't been out since saturday which is fine cause have been sick from chemo and zometa...Cher was wonderful!!
-
I wish you could get a time out from chemo & zometa side effects this summer.
-
Lily55,
Hope you've found this week to be less stressful.
-
Hi everyone---Been in the house too since Saturday--have to go out tomorrow.
Lily how are u doing?
I hope Markat is away for a few day for some goo rest and family time;
So now some of u r not working for a little whie, u must be somewhat happy about that.
The wether is pretty OK here so far. I say so far cuz u never know what Nature has in store.
Jazzy I guess we covered everything about beets that we could--we have so much calmness here it's nice.
-
Oh on another note--Joey came home from Bible school and told me what le learned or rather what he heard and hoe he learned it. I had lots of splainin' to do--so I reinterpreted the meaning of what he thought so he's underdtand better cuz I think there are parts in the Bible which show predudice so I didn't like that tht wasn't explained why people felt this way. I hope I don't get a phone call like--stay out of this. Bit I don't care teaching the bible could be very tricky in most places--my thoughts only so now I have a responsibility to set him straight. LOL Beside the Pope announced that there is nothing wrong with being an atheist as long as u are a good person u can go to heaven----This pope is really working it. I know more atheists than agnostics or Catholics so that made me happy.
-
Hi all - hope that everyone's "hump" day is going well. I look forward to seeing what you all write. I had my chemo yesterday - one more to go - hallelujah!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today I am back at work. Hey Cam - when my daughter turned 6 she wanted a pink hippopotamus cake - I found a lady who taught cake decorating to make it. Always will remember that
Hugs to you Hermits-
Marilyn
-
cvmarilyn--Did she sing, "I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" that year? DD2 went through a phase singing that. Loved the silliness. Happy final chemo ahead. Milestone!
camille--Good for you! Joey will benefit from diverse voices. And... one more beet note... I had a workshop I had to attend, forcing me out of the house...so I went on a beet hunt. Found one scraggly specimen, bruised and squishy... so I have to postpone my culinary beet attempt for the weekend. Dh usually wants to go to "the big city" so I'll be more successful finding beets to experiment with!
blondie--good luck with chemo tomorrow. Missed Cher. Maybe can catch it on youtube... Whoever thought she'd be singing in 2013? Lots of years for a career.
teka, Jazzy--be well.
Laurie--news? Hoping your trip to Omaha is fun and successful for your pitcher!
Lori--How are you holding up under all your stresses?
Hard to believe June is flying by...
-
June is flying by! We decided to save our money for disney during a school break- either fall or spring. DH has happily been playing golf and the girls have been swimming. Its horribly hot and humid here, like Florida. I'm not jealous of you Floridians during summer
I've been a little blue. Trying to shake it off. Working definitely helped my hermitting so I need to just get up every morning like I have to go to work and get out of the house I think. At least for a walk or something. I still have sporadic periods on Tamoxifen- having a horrible one now (sorry for TMI). So I don't think that helps at all!!!
Anyway, love to all. Off to wrangle the kids and think about what's for dinner -
I had to settle down this week and do some light housework.
Daughter came home long enough to groom Teka then off to see BF.
markat, it'll get easier with time.
-
I have been in the house since Saturday also, have to go out tomorrow also.
Cammie a phone call, interesting one that would b...
CVM...glad you are at work, hope chemo went well...keep in touch
mark so jealous, want to go to DW haven't been since 2010...need my fix BUT can't walk it like I could.....
thanks Skittle....I have to take the bus welll 3 of them, no one to drive me DIL will pick me up which actually is better for me after chemo...my week off is next week, hope to have my car fixed soon....Cher who would have thought...she looks nervous...
Teka, Skittle, Cammie, Lori, Laurie, Mark and all others HUGS....
-
Thanks Teka! I know Teka is your cat so it was funny reading your post like DD came home and groomed YOU! Thanks for the giggle
Blondie we've (well the girls and I) have never been to DW. DH went a lot as a kid. So we want to plan it out and do it right. I'm a little nervous about the walking so I'm going to try and start exercising more. My stupid feet still go numb and my whole body aches (Wah). Does your hospital or any other services offer transportation that you could ask about? Maybe the social worker could try to find you something better than public transit? Just a thought -
-
good idea but think I waited to long I will have to find out.....COSA that is the aging group in the county where I live probably does, or the american cancer society does, have to call them als....
-
Markat be kind to u'rself it will be a little time for u--look forward to DW and if u really are having a hard rime get a wheelchair and u go in front of the line anyway--Don't make u'rself miserable just do what's comfortable for u--u and u'r family will love it--and u have to go when it's not so hot or no matter what u'll be miserable So look forward to kids, DH and some relaxation.
Blondie The American Cancer Society provides rides for people who don't or can not drive --for whatever reason There are wonderful volunteers who give their time --paying forward--and it doesn't cost anything--just check it out. I didn't know that and my oldest DD did all the leg work for me so I got a ride everyday to my rads and a ride home--It was wonderful and they were so kind so I'm sure they must have a chapter there where u live. Look it up for u'rself and call Please.
Teka
u never disappoint me. LOL--U don't say much but u are a very sweet person. Thank u for being u.
Please say a prayer for my Joey--long story--- he needs prayers right now and I know the power of all uf us And u all know how I feel about him..
-
Sweet Joey!!
-
Camille- I'm praying for your Joey!
Skittle- my family is from MN too! My gramps had the most amazing garden!
We are in Omaha. I am two weeks out from the second Lumpectomy and the pain is still bad. It is what it is. My MO appointment is 6/28.RO is two weeks after that. Since my diagnosis, I have had two friends get diagnosed too. Much worse than me.
Invasive. I am doing my best to be there for them as they face this horrible journey.
Love and hugs to all of you,
XOXOXOX
Laurie -
Hi hermits- middle of the week and looking forward to getting through the next few days. Better work schedule this week, which is helping me to get better rest, etc.
Markat- you have been through a lot with the loss of your mom. Those blue days will stay for awhile no doubt. Just be patient and kind to yourself.
Okay, so what did you think about Danielle winning The Voice? I don't usually watch the show but found myself very hooked into Danielle from the first time I saw her a few weeks back. I really like Michelle too, but thought Danielle had a real "star quality" plus a really flawless voice too. She will certainly be on quite a ride now, and hope the others get recording contracts too. A very talented group of young folks.
Will check in again soon. Think I will roast my beets tonight!
-
Jazzy,
I liked Danielle too. I was not a fan of Michelle's look, but boy when she opened her mouth, that girl could sing!! I will buy her album for sure!
Markat-The grief after I lost my father was paralyzing. I don't remember how long it lasted, but it isn't relevant because everyone has their own journey. You also have Cancer thrown into the mix and THAT my friend is a whole other ball game. I pray for your peace. Know that we are here for you no matter how you are feeling. -
Laurie I don't know how long the pain lasts for what u had done, but why don't u call u'r Dr. and tell them, maybe something is infected. Like I said I don't know anything about that--but i seems it's been going on to long to me. Maybe someone with this experience will chime in and help u out. U know how I've said that pain is so much worse than being debrested, that doesn't hurt at all, that's why I don't know anything.
-
Prayers for our sweet little Joey. Give him an extra hug from all of us!
Laurie are you taking your pain pills? No need to try and suffer through it! I agree with Camille, maybe call and see if the pain is normal. Do you have a fever or any other signs of infection? I would think two surgeries back to back like that could cause more pain than just the first surgery. Prayers for you.
Thank you all for your kind words! -
Markat, June 13 marked five years after losing my mom. It does "get better" but I think each of us heals differently and on no schedule at all. You must be exhausted, so try very hard and go against your natural tendencies... and put yourself first for a little while. Take a nap if you want, or have sandwiches for dinner and let the girls "cook." As for Disney--you will love it. They do make things more user-friendly if you tell them about a health condition. Sometimes they color-code access and you can go to the head of the line without the wheelchair--but those are available if you need one. Don't be shy about asking. My only tip would be, as you enter the front gates, turn left. Everyone has the natural tendency to turn right, and if you turn left, lines are shorter and crowds are lighter. (DH was stationed in Fl for a while, and we Disneyed a lot.) You might, too, consider a pass for Disney/Universal/Epcot. Depends on how long your stay will be. Take lots of sunscreen and be prepared for snacks at movie theater prices. (But then, I'm rattling on too long. Sorry!!)
Camille... Prayers surround Joey and will continue to. Love and hugs to you both.
blondie... Wish I could give you a ride (even though I'm a cowardly driver.) Have a little Honda Fit... great mileage, but not much else, sorry to say.. I haven't been on a city bus for years and years. Last time was in Des Moines with my mother showing her granddaughters her old stomping grounds. We would always eat at a Chinese restaurant where she and my father dated in the '50's.
teka...
Laurie... Please don't suffer if you don't need to. Meds are there to help, if you have reached your limit. I hope your friends hear encouraging news and are able to cope with treatment options given to them.
Jazzy... How did the beets turn out? I'm thinking mine might be Sunday at this rate...
Hopeful Thursday to all.
-
Hi ladies, yes, I am still taking the pain pills. There is no weird redness or fever. I keep checking because it feels like it should "look" bad. It even hurts when I walk. Each step is painful. The two surgeries obviously were just a lot of messing around in there and it just sucks. The doctor checked things at my follow up and he seemed perplexed that I had so much discomfort, but no answers. I guess each body just handles things differently. I'm sure as time goes by, it will be fine. I just worry about the raising of my arm (for my job) as it is almost impossible at this point. I guess it is all just too soon. What we go though in our heads just seems like such a long time, when truly it is not.
Thank you for listening to my struggles. I appreciate all of you.
Have sweet dreams my friends.
XOXOXO
Laurie -
Laurie- having the two surgeries close together was probably very tough on your body. The traveling may be very hard on your body too, although I know you were looking forward to seeing your son's game. I would call the doctor and maybe at least have them up or change your meds to something that will help you to feel better. You need to be well healed before you start the rad therapy. Take it easy as best you can.
Skittle-did not get to the beets tonight but will let you know when I do. At this point, it may be the weekend as well!
To all the rest, wishing you a night of good rest!

LaurieParr,
