HUGS!!!!
-
Hi hermits- just checking in here on this weekend. We had a weird dust storm last night. Grit in my teeth. Ugh.
Teka- glad the luncheon went well. I would dread that too. I am sure those folks enjoyed a break from their grief to spend time with those who understand so very well.
Laurie- many things to be grateful for during this difficult journey.
Cami-
Going to the local farmers market in the am. Looking forward to filling a basket with fresh vegetables and greens.
Love to all hermits!
-

markat, hugs to you as you tackle all those responsibilities. It is so hard.
camille, party sounds great. Joey must've soaked in a lot of love and laughter.
Teka, brave girl. Glad the day went better than you thought. Everyone was lifted.
Laurie, wow. What blessings your drs are. Wish they could all learn such patient care.
Jazzy, I love farmers markets. Wish I could find some rhubard down here. Dd2 always asks for a rhubarb pie for her July b-day, and I haven't found a source yet this year. I need to just start growing my own.
Sandy, happy cooking. I need to spend some more time in the kitchen. We ate out yesterday for early Father's Day, and even though I had eaten plenty, of course I had to top it off with a rich chocolate gelato. sigh.
Lily, hoping you are finding some answers.
Lori, Monday comes too quickly when work is no fun for whatever reasons. I hope your days go better.
Enjoy your Sundays. I'm off to plant a bed of peppermint. I know it's invasive, but I hope to enjoy it anyway... Wish it would rain.
-
Love to you all today. My daddy is in Heaven, but we are going to take my husband to the largest and faciest buffet in Vegas. I am going to try to dress up a bit as I have been in PJ's for three weeks.
Thank you all for the updates on your lives. I am following all of you.
My boys are back from Utah. My son pitched great and they won both games. He bought a pink arm sleeve to wear now and one of the boys are passing around a pink baseball mitt. It is in honor of all of us.
Love you all
XOXOXOX

Hi hermits- happy fathers day. I see some of you, like me, no longer have your dad around. Others of you may be celebrating with your own families and husbands. I hope today is nice no matter what. Here is to all those great dads out there, past and present!
Farmers market was okay, not as much there as I hoped. I wonder with the severe drought if it is hard for the local farmers to grow as much this year? It may also be too early for some things. Got some tasty greens, beets, carrots, and onions. Also some fresh goat cheese from one of the local goat farms. A few supplimentary things were added from the nearby health store and now I have lots of good food for the week. I plan to do some cooking later on today (fish and greens!)
Markat- I am sorry you are still having to go through so much. Hope you are taking care of yourself.
Laurie- so good to hear about your son's games and their support of us gals.
Skittle- I have mint planted in pots. Hope you get some rain soon!
Blondie- I hope you can get the hours you want!
Cami- sounds like you had a super good day yesterday. Hope you can enjoy some nice rest today!
To all the other hermits, hope your weekend wraps up good. I like hearing the stories about parties, baseball games, gardening, trips to the beach, and the like. Hot fun in the summer time.
-
Hope you all are having a wonderful day....no hours for me at Macy's oh well.....

-
Markat I'm glad u are going away for a few days.
Oh who's cooking blah I don't like to do that anymore.
And I never knew u grew peppermint.--That must have a nice fragrance.
Laurie u'r son is precious and just leave the pj's at home just today anyway.
Everyone sounds ok today anyway--I hope whoever needs ro rest does just that. hahaha I'm one, I'm a bubble of energy that pops quite a bit.

Jazzy... I plead ignorance. What do you do with beets? My mother used to love them (I think hers were canned?) in a deep pickled purple glory... and I thought they were awful (as a child) and haven't tried them since. Never had a fresh one.
Camille... Peppermint grows like a weed so most people put them in container gardens. Arkansas is covered in pooooor dirt, more like clay, so anything that will grow is a blessing. I enjoy a mint sprig in tea, or even to make a tea from it, or a sprig as decorative touch on a bowl of rich chocoate ice cream... If I get ambitiious, I'll "brew" it into an essence, and make grasshopper pie, about once a year. Once upon a time, long ago when I rode horses competitively, I enjoyed just eating a leaf or two to perk myself up before a tough jumping run. It was purely psychological, but when you're 13, anything works. :-)
Laurie... Lots of lost fathers for hermits, I'm afraid. Lost mine when I was 26... So we celebrate dh. Wonderful time at buffet? Favorite food? I'm sure you looked gorgeous, away from pj's and into the world. It can be a hard coming-into-the-light, kind of like coming out of a movie theater, and badly needing sunglasses.
Sandy... sorry no hours. Must be a little frustrating.
Cvm... best of luck packing hubby off and readying for alone time. Hope son feels good and has no episodes while he's gone.
Hugs to each. May your Mondays be kind.
-
Skittle- I know those beets you are talking about! I hate those purple pickled beets we all had to eat as kids (they tasted like dirt to me!) I refused to eat beets as an adult until I had some one time at a restaurant that were roasted and then it changed my mind completely!
The ones I get from the market here I slice up and roast on a cookie sheet with a bit of olive oil and spices. They are delicious as a side dish or in salads. They have a much better flavor than the pickled ones. If you like root vegetable (carrots, radishs, potatoes, etc.), you might like these roasted. Mix them with potatoes too. Also delicious in omelettes!
Another dust storm this afternoon......
-
I am going to roast beets in a crock pot with aluminum foil this summer.
-
Jazzy, Teka, Thank you! Now I have to go buy some beets and try them. A new adventure. (They're probably going to be wonderful and I'll feel silly for having shunned them all these years.)
Jazzy--your dust storms... are we talking Dust Bowl type? I'm picturing blinding dust, piling up all around. I hope you're safe and able to breathe!
Hugs to all.
-
Good morning hermits! I hope everyone has a good week, with what ever you may be doing or facing with your treatment.
Skittle- the dust storms here are called "haboobs" and you may have seen some photos on the news about the huge ones in AZ last year. It is like a layer of wind that descends on the city and is not a choking wind like those horrible dust storms in the midwest back in the Depression. But they come up suddenly and since I have asthma, I get indoors fast! We have never had these here until this year, but are in a three year severe drought.
Glad you want to try the beets. I like Teka's idea too!
Blessings to everyone this week. Back into the fray I go.....
-
BEETS I ;ove beets, but I never in my life heard that they were made any other way but pickled. I'd put them in my salads or just plain. I just didn't know.
Teka'w way sounds simple too. Hmmm Of course no one ere like beets but me.
I was in one dust storm years ago in AZ and it was terrible--we closed all the windows and u could see it was coming like a fog rolling in. Blah
I hope everyone is doing well
-
I hope everyone has a wonderful day!!!
-
Husband & I love beet greens from the vegetable garden.
-
OK about beets do they come out green or is that the stem like things. I hve never bought them raw so it would be useless for me to try them--I'd screw it up, don't have the know how or feeling to make anything--al I know is I always like pickled beets with my mom, but I'm sure she didn't make them, well she might have yrs and yrs ago, I never asked. I used to like (probably stil do) corn relish that was always good-wow haven't had that in forever. Oh and loved my mom's orange salad we all di sounds not so good, but it really was with rye bread. hahaha
-
Beet greens are the tops (stems & leaves), and beets are the roots in the ground.
-
Thanks Teka I thought so but didn't know u can eat that----but it actually makes sense. My dad had a big garden but never grew beats--but we did have rhubarb and we'd just pick it and eat them.
-
Whoa, Jazzy, Learn something new every day! Haboob sounds like one of those permanent giggle words for sixth graders. Had never heard of one before. Live and learn. :-)
Camille, love your dad's garden. Rhubarb would be grand... We have too many droughts here to have anything reliably grow.
Blondie, pretty rainbow! Have been thinking of replacing my turtle.
Teka, you're broadening my horizons. Now I'll be trying the tops/greens as well as the roots/roasted! Looking forward to the next time I go veg shopping!
Laurie, Lori, Markat, cvm, all, hope the week unwinds gently for you.
-
I used to eat raw rhubarb stalks. Sour!
A little information for 1st time rhubarb pickers. Leaves are poisonous!!!
-
OMG I didn't know that, See beets are ok, but that isn't the point I never heard that.
-
I'll never eat wild mushrooms, no matter how experienced the picker. Scary!
-
Teka, you bring back memories. My grandfather (at his "lake place" on the St. Croix in Minnesota) would go out hiking and bring back wild mushrooms. He really knew his edibles vs poisonous. And I remember being cautioned harshly about the rhubarb leaves... (An ancient friend of his would taunt--"better be red or you'll be dead!" I was fascinated and horrified at the same time.) Gee, that was another lifetime ago.
-
I really like pickled beets, lots of vinegar! Not so much beet tops. There is a dish called Harvard beets, not pickled and served hot.
Mom liked rhubarb, would stew it, and make pies. Yuck! -
I remember mom & dad tossing out wild mushrooms given by a neighbor.
-
I've exhausted myself with private & public posting.
Sweet dreams!!
-
Love rhubarb and strawberry pie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thought of this over the w/e - if we're on a "journey" - are we there yet????
-
Teka why do u make me laugh so hard--u r so cute. And I remember the "mushroom" My dad used to pick them, but no one else ate them--to this day i won't eat them--he was always fine but still.
CV when my DD#2 had a 10th BD she wanted Strawberry rhubarb pie--but I did get a cake too. Not the most popular of pies. And don't worry thisjourney will "end" for u soon I pray,
I'm still going along for the ride I start PT Thursday--this should be interesting for me.
