How soon after the port was in place did you start chemotherapy?

Hi, my wife is having a port put in place this Monday (6/17/13).  She has grade 3, tripple negative breast cancer so it's very aggressive.  How soon after the port is in place did you start chemotherapy?  I'd like her to get her first treatment of chemotherapy as soon as possible after the port is in place.  They haven't done any surgery to take out the tumor yet.  Thanks.

Ed

Hi Ed, a port can be accessed for chemo on the same day as the placement there is no waiting neccessary.

Hoping her treatment does well for her and she doesn't have too many side effects.

    Love n hugs.   Chrissy

Ed, seconding what Chrissy said.  The wait described in other threads is when a woman has had surgery first - things have to heal a bit before chemo if that's the sequence of things.

I has mine placed on a Monday and started chemo on the Tuesday morning.

Chemo infusions typically take many hours, so there's not usually enough time to place the port and do chemo on the same day...

Thanks Outfield and Jenn.  I called the doctor's office and asked them to try to get my wife in for chemo on Tuesday.  This would give her a day to recover.  In addition to putting the port in on Monday, they are also doing a sentinel node biopsy and are putting her under with full anesthesia so I think she will need a day to recover.  But I'm hoping that by Tuesday she will be well enough to start receiving chemo.

When I went to my surgery follow up Friday 21, my surgeon prepared me for port placement so I could just schedule it and not have to come in to see her before. She said many women like to start chemo same day as she can leave a needle in place for the chemo infusion so the woman doesn't need to get the extra stick. I voiced concern I might be really nauseated and she said they would make sure I wasn't by having anti-nausea meds in with chemo and after that we would stay ahead of the nausea just like we did with the pain.

My June 12 surgery was for lumpectomy and sentinel node. First try no clean margins on breast so she went far out. First node looked clear but 2 and 3 had cancer. She removed a significant area under my arm. Pathology report the next Tuesday showed my margins were clear on my breast but the cancer was in 5 out if the 11 total nodes they removed. So I am a beginning Stage 3 (IIIa).

Anything with the nodes apt to be painful because if the nerves. I had 2 fine needle aspirations and a core needle biopsy done at the time of my breast biopsy and even that much hurt. Talk to your doctor. Sentinel node biopsy so important but there is a very big chance there will be cancer seen and need to remove a larger area to run pathology. I have heard port placement done under general is home same day but NO BIG DEAL like cancer surgery. My best to you and your wife. May she be as pain free as possible as she moves through this process of becoming a BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR! Sheila

I think it was about a week, during which time I did labs, a PET scan, and then a MUGA scan.
