Hi there

I'm new to this so sorry if i ramble on and im not too familair with termanology

My mum got stage 1 cancer grade two 2 years ago which came as a big shock!! she did really she progressed really well and got better. she had part of her breast removed, chemo and radiotherapy and the cancer went away and she was able to have a normal happy life. she's 62 and is really fit for her age, she wants to do the great north run and she power walks with the dog sometimes.

recently she's been having pain in her hip and initially said it was like a pain and needles feeling. but now whyen ive over heard her she's saying its a pain in her hip. she went for her check up last week and saw the doctor (richard bransons doctor no less!!) and they sent her for a bone scan which is on tuesday. when she came back from her check up she said her pain was probably sciatica but i can tell in her eyes she thinks it something more serious

she's just so worried as am I that its bone mets. the waiting is horrible. comforting and being huggy person doesnt come naturally to me and my dad and brother are similar. but im the only one who can really talk to her about it. I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders.

she's not just my mum she's my best friend and i dont know how i will cope if its bad news on tuesday. I have had constent empty feeling in the pit of my tummy since i found out about the scan. I love her to bits and she's a wonderful mum. I'm not a religious person but il be saying prays from now till tuesday

thanks for letting me vent

Hi Gavin and welcome to BCO.  As a person with bone mets I can tell you its not the end of the world nor the end of her life just yet.  Should she have bone mets there are a lot of treatments available and it is possible to live many years........maybe not as many as we would hope for but many.

Please, take a deep breath and try to relax a little.......although hearing that your mom has mets (and it's not for certain yet) is tough and it will take her a while to get her head around that fact she will be able to live for a long time.

Keep coming here for support and to ask any questions you need answers for.

    Love n hugs.   Chrissy

Gavin try not to worry. I know it is hard----

I am a jogger (former runner) and am 77 so way older than your Mom. I do a 10K race every years and jog with my dogs daily. I often have aches and pains in my legs and hips. Once I even broke my hip during a half marathon.  But all these times the pains have been overuse injuries from doing too much.  Since your mum is so active that is possible what her hip pain is. Has she been doing anything different lately in her exercising? Did she get new running shoes? Sometimes just pulling out a bush can cause an injury. I got a stress fracture in my knee from doing that and also got 3 fractured vertebrae from carrying a heavy sack of dog food.

I'm telling you all this to see if you can figure out the reason for her pain. You know the saying "When you hear hoofbeats, don't look for zebras"  I try to think that way. I know it is hard because when a doctor finds out you have a cancer history they immediately think it is bone mets.

I am sending you some positive thoughts and prayers that it is nothing serious. Bless you for caring so much!

    thank you that means alot

thats what im hoping for that all this walking the dog has caused a bit of pain or maybe its a touch of athritis (is 62 too young for that?)

my worry comes from her the way she's talking, its like she assumes she has mets already. She's away on business today i think its good that shes doing normal stuff until tuesday.

    Thanks again

Yes, I agree. It is best to keep your mind busy with other things while you are waiting.

I think you can get arthritis at any age, but probably more common when you are older.

Hoping for good results for your Mum.
