    Not so fast... Split decision and Myriad's stock went up 10% after stock market got wind of the decision. Many Supreme Court watchers believe the justices got it wrong...

    Stock market was confused by the Supreme Court's mixed decision. Going to have to wait and see where this decision settles. Based on the decision Myriad still owns many enforceable patents. Gina Kolata mentions the paradox of slowing down innovation if genes, specifically bacterial genes can't be patented. We might see prices of important genetic tests retreat due to competition, but we might also see less risks taken when it comes to investments in innovative research...

    Hopefully companies will want to compete with Myriad's $4000 test as there is a profit to be made. The market's response is odd, but perhaps that engineered genes are patentable is good news for Myriad as they were expected to lose the patent on genes that are not manufactured.
