bad reconstruction results

OMG,this sounds scary, all this pain and suffering and I am thinking finally at the end of this yr maybe I will have a sort of 2 boobs back but the right side that had the cancer has a big dent in it on the side and I asked the PS and
BS why is that? They only said dont worry once the fills are done then the dent will fill out. I feel like a freak, half human half plastic. Got a therapist appt to talk my issues out. Cried the whole 2 1/2 days off and on in the hosp and cried every day for a wk b4 I went. -
I had reconstruction Surgery after my mestectomy in 2009, and since then I have had severe pain and I have not been anle to wear a bra without almost crying. This is my 3rd implant and it has fallen down by my ribs, It is so obvious that I can't even go swimming without wearing a dark T-shirt to cover it, and then I am still so uncomfortable. I don't know what to do, I refuse to let my husband see me or touch me, The Dr. that did it was Rawlings in Tallahassee Florida and everytime I complain to him he says theey look great, well how great can they look if their not the same size or even with each other. Does this mean for those of us that have this problem have to live this way for ever and do nothing?
-
It doesn't matter if the Dr thinks they look great. It only matters if you do. Go see another PS who specializes in breast reconstruction not breast augmentation. Real ps who do exclusively reconstruction for cancer patients. You do not have to settle. Have you researched flap reconstruction instead of implants. I had a BMX/DIEP after my recurrence and I couldn't be happier with the results. Having BC is bad enough without having to deal with recon disasters and pain.
-
TenaLouise, we're sorry you've had a bad experience with your reconstruction! As Snobird said, it's you who have to be happy with the results. There's more information on Reconstruction at the main Breastcancer.org site, and of course from the ladies here on the forums.

Hi, I was just diagnosed with a recurrance (after 9 years). Oncologist says I will have to have a UMX. I am still reeling from that news. I have not yet met with a surgeon and I am researching what to do. Does anyone know of a good surgeon and a PS in the Los Angeles/Santa Monica area? Is there anyone I should avoid? After reading these forums I am thinking of an immediate DIEP. What do you guys think?
-
TenaLouise~
With my first surgery I had to deal with an arrogant ass of a PS, that also seemed to think pain and lopsided was okay. I am now working my way through more surgeries. It took awhile to find another PS.
There are many, many PS out there that should NOT be working with breast cancer patients. They are more interested in getting "cash-carrying, healthy, mommy-makeover" patients. (BTW, I do not have anything against women wishing to have cosmetic surgeries, just making a point about some of the docs.)
I checked your doc online, and he seems to be heavily serious about the mommy makeover business. Again, some PS with good Reconstruction skills also do cosmetics to make their living. Just have to find one with extensive EXPERIENCE with breast cancer patients.
There seem to be a lot of PS out there who are "wonderful" UNLESS, things don't go right. Then they want to drop you and dismiss you. Sometimes, things just don't go right, but that's when the PS needs to step up to the plate, and do EVERYTHING possible to get it right for his patient.
Do you have a strong friend to go with you on appointments (perhaps an RN?) Even if your husbands supports/loves you, he may be the type to just take every word a doc says as gospel, and nod his head up and down. You need to have a list of things written down, and get answers to all. It helps to have a friend to even read the list, point with you to breast areas, and to get the doctor to feel areas. Some PS just sit and just stare at your chest and say stupid things like "that 'looks' like a satisfactory outcome."
I went to get more opinions and still met more PS that were as bad as the first. I finally hit on one which was my SIXTH second opinion. So try to get at least three.
I don't know your financial or insurance situation, but one doctor I really, really wanted to go to in Florida is at Mayo Clinic-Jacksonville. Mayo Clinic takes tons of insurance and the doctors all work for Mayo Clinic, so you will not have separate PS bill, or deal with PS being out-of-network or not accepting insurance. With what insurance does not cover, you can talk to billing department about monthly payments.
His name is Dr. Galen Perdikis. His middle name is Compassion, IMO. I had a lengthy phone consult with him. He will make you look good and feel good. The only reason I didn't go to him was logistics. You live much closer.
Also, the mecca for breast restoration seems to be in New Orleans, that you will soon find out has made many breast cancer patients happy after dealing with problematic breast reconstruction.
I feel your pain! Take care and please do not give up.

TenaLouise - I feel your pain. My right side felt like the implant was rubbing on my rib and it was very uncomfortable. My recon looked great and my PS could not figure out what was happening until one day it was ovious that the implant had come through the muscle and was threatening explant. He then realized that the implant was rubbing on the rib. He reconstucted the torn pec musle with Alloderm and made sling for implant with alloderm as well. The final outcome was much better - no more rib pain and the implant where it should be. The left decided to do the same thing about 5 months later and PS did same procedure. The result is very good and my implants are 960cc saline so are heavy. I also wear a bra 24/7 except for showering which keeps everything where it should be.
I hope you can find some relief with a new PS who is understanding. It sounds as if your implants are doing the same thing as mine did.

I'm in Northern California. I saw a new plastic surgeon a few days ago. The look on her face when she saw my chest verified everything I had been thinking. She said the expanders that are in my chest are way too small for my frame and they are not placed properly. My left is droopy and appears to be going under my arm. My right is high and in the middle. She said that it appears the right side is encapsulated with scar tissue and would not expand much further. I told her my dr said not to worry about the scar tissue because it would be forced to break up as I was expanded. Well he only fills me every 6 weeks at 30ccs a pop. She said there was no way the fills were going to be able to keep up with the scar tissue. I was being filled too little and too far inbetween. But it doesn't really matter because they are too small anyway! I am waiting for authorization for surgery to correct this. She told me she would have to fix the pockets and basically gut my chest again. I'm reliving my bmx all over again. I found this out exactly a year after I was told I need the mastectomy. Great, huh? Everyone around me is telling me I need a lawyer. Anyone else go this route? I also looked on the CA Medical Board site for lawsuits against my doctor. Didn't find any complaints or suits. I did a search in my county superior court database and found numerous cases filed. How can this be?
Anybody from Northern California that would like to swap drs names to see who had who?

BCAvenger, don't you just love THAT look???I' m only one year post BMX and 9 months post exchange yet the moment I saw my chest I knew things were not going to look good and it continued to get worse.Somehow my PS would examine me and say "looks good , looks good"I'd go home and look in the mirror and wonder who he had been talking to.My BS told me at each visit that I should be patient, that things would change.Yes, they changed for the worse. It was only when my gynecologist saw me for a routine exam and upon seeing my breasts asked"what happened to you"He didn't know that I had developed BC since last seeing him.My only thought at hearing those words was, thankGod it's not just me that sees what's going on.So now that the so called cat is out of the bag I'm left with this mess. I have seen someone for a second opinion and unfortunately the fix is not a simple one.At this point I don't know what I'm going to do Whatever I do won't be happening this summer. I gave up last summer to 2 surgeries, numerous doctor visits and a ton of PT.At 68 (tomorrow) I don't have all that many summers left and I plan to enjoy those that I do.In hind site there is a lot that I would change but I won't go down that road. I need to look forward.

Had my Bilateral expander reconstruction May had my implants placed. I felt bad from that day on. Did not have problems with expanders except PS did not help or even mention size I felt bad when I asked my GP he made me feel ungrateful and said I was fortunate to beable to have a reconstruction done at all. I felt so discouraged and humiliated. After my exchange things started to go wrong about two weeks after surgery one implants slipped I could see it and feel it go. I was ignored when i went to see my PS. I was so upset. Long story short I am a mess, in pain and just plain going out of my mind.
Don't know what to do I have had five years of tightness and pain my pec muscles are torn my reconstruction looks very bad and all my Dr says is I am upset b/c it looks bad.I have lost total respect for him and have no where to turn.
I wish I was just plain flat with a line across my chest

I had TEs that evidently were infected from the time they were placed by the ps. Lots of pain. Drain tubes were removed, but swelling occured, especially in the left one, under the arm. Kept telling ps, but he kept saying it was all normal. Both breasts turned black like rotten peaches. Incisions dehisced. Went to see doc. He palpated the lump and it exploded. Relunctently, he agreed to go in and remove the TEs. Relunctently. After major debridement, I awoke hooked to a wound vac which I would wear for nine months. I sought another doc, one who specialized in wound care. The wounds were infected and the infections began tunneling through my torso. After several surgeries, pseudomonis, osteomelitis, a rib resection and a hickman line, I was left with a one inch deep trench across my chest.
Three years later, I chose a ps to do some "clean up" work on the loose skin. This ps and his partner specilize in damage repair, not purely cosmetic surgery. Even after all the damage, I was a candidate for DIEP flap. I had that done and am so happy with the results. My docs are so caring and tell me every visit that they will not stop until I am completely satisfied. The tummy tuck feature is awesome, too. I have had some complications, but they are nothing compared to the first try. Please, ladies...seek an expert in reconstruction, not just a ps. Best wishes to all.

Hello Layla - I am interested in talking to other women who have had bad results after reconstruction surgery. I had silicone implants and the result was ugly. Plastic surgeon said breast surgeon didn't leave enough skin. I've several doctors look at them and they all agree. Won't even undress in front of my husband. A lot of pain for such a bad result. I now have to wear protheses to fill out my bra. Oh well, I'm thankful that I'm alive! My results are by no means typical.

Hi buzzard, My bad recon result was not due to implants so I hope more ladies come forward to address your issue.
I had a uni-mastectomy with an immediate tissue SGAP flap, which failed 5 days post-op due to venous insufficiency. I began chemo treatment after that and developed an infection in the surgical site. I was left with nothing but scar tissue and a really ugly, long vertical scar. Speed forward three years; last June (2012) I had a successful stacked DIEP. It was a tough surgery and not without compromise, all said and done I'm glad I did it. I had very experienced surgeons specializing in micro surgical breast recon, it's all they do!
I was not a candidate for implants as prior to the mastectomy I'd had a previous diagnosis and went the lumpectomy, chemo and radiation route. Implants and radiation are not a good mix.
I have been following with interest those who are posting about a new technique of fat grafting to supplement implants. I believe it might look more natural to have a layer of fat between the skin and the implant.
I don't know much about your situation as you've only posted once; is there a possibility to go for smaller implants and or a small skin flap? Tough to think about another surgery at this point I know, but many of us do end up having reconstruction done in several stages. So keep at it until you get the result you want, you may have to switch plastic surgeons. Get back on this site and look around, see if you can find others in your area who can recommend a surgeon. I've been on this site since 2009 and the women here care and they'll help you as much as they can! Good luck. I'm in the Boston (north) area, if I can be of any help private message me.
-
me too, how are you doing?? My name is Michelle , I live in Boston, have you had it improved? I just started a site for us to band together against the PS that do substandard work and leave us unhappy and depressed due to their indifference
-
no, I disagree , your results are typical. Most plastic surgeons treat cancer patience with substandard care. I had to go to another plastic surgeon..... It's malpractice. Under Bill Clinton 1996. We must band together cause the ps only care about private patients so they get paid 100% private pay, as opposed to 25% from insurance. We need to band together!!
-
hi, We must band together. Doctors know if you have lumpectomy and radiation you become a bad candidate for reconstruction. They do not care. We must band together for they only care about their private patients who pay 100% out of their pocket... This is substandard care and that is malpractice, discrimination against breat cancer patient due to finance payment
-
we must band together!! All of us unhappy with the surgery performed and that we were to settle for substandard work
-
we need to band together against these PS that do substandard work and do not dare. Discriminations against Breast cancer patients due to reimbursement by insurance companies
-
would love to meet for coffee, I live in Quincy, MA. I started a page dealing with the substandard care breast cancer pat ins get for reconstruction due to discrimination for payment rom insurance companies is much less than private pay!
-
contact me, I think if enough of us put together a forum we can go against the PS. Class action for discrimination/malpractice against breast cancer patients due to substandard work compared to private patient payment 100%
-
small girl,
This is an old thread which has been inactive for 3 years. However, it's a topic worth discussing. You might consider finding a more active thread on the topic or starting a new one yourself. I am sorry you've had a rough time of it.
-
me too, 12/9/14. Plastic Surgeon from Brigham and women's Hospital Boston
Want to sue for malpractice and discrimination against cancer patient versus private patient cosmetic 100% self paying patient. No compliant with plan of type, size and support of implants
-
I just had my DIEP at Vanderbilt with Dr. Perdikis. The day of my surgery I arrive at the hospital to find out that somehow the breast surgeon was not scheduled to do the mastectomy, just the reconstruction is scheduled. Dr Perdiikis sat in the surgical waiting room refusing to let them send me home. He even called the breast surgeon and made her cancel her morning to do the surgery and told her that if he has to, he would perform the mastectomy by himself.
I have had a few complications and problems at My local medical facility. He gave me his cell phone number and told me to just call him directly if needed.
I will hopefully be having the second procedure soon. How pleased were you with the final results
