Thanks Maureen, I will check in with PS if this continues.  I think it is so hard to keep from over doing.  tpark-So glad to hear the seeping is better.  Mine is decreasing as well, hope I can get the fills started next week.  So glad your daughter is here in Denver.  I have done this race in the past, just the relay but it is such a great race.  I have been a race volunteer as well and was so tempted to help again but with just returning to work I decided to rest.  Congrats to your daughter!

Just got home from exchange surgery (1030 am) and wow, so much easier then expected. I think after mastectomy any surgery is easier. My dr was able to place both implants, despite my deflated left expander- wahoo!

Feel sore but have had no pain meds. Just feels like my sports bra is too tight/achey. Thank you for all your prayers and support. This group rocks!

Bishops- so glad you are home and feeling well! Such good news.

Although I'm back to work, I'm still so tired I barely function after about 4:00. Anyone else experiencing thus level of fatigue? Granted, I do teach 4th grade and have 2 kids of my own, but still...

I think of all of you often. (((Hugs)))

Wow! That was fast expanders to implants! I have 4 more months to go. You will have to let us all know if you like the implants better. Getting used to expanders but not a super big fan, especially where the magnetic port area is - that area can be tender.

    Congrats!

kap-I too just returned to work and it is very hard as the day wears on.  I do 12 hr shifts as a L&D nurse and it just is all I can do to get through it.  I have spaced them out in order to rest at least a day in between but need to keep up with DH and teenage/20s kids too.  I was blaming the tamoxifen as well.  Hope the energy returns soon.

Bishops-congrats on the new squishies!  So jealous, but can't wait to get these TEs out.  Although not looking forward to another surgery, good to hear it is so much easier.

    Bishops3003 ... That was a very quick exchange...congratulations

My sisters this really sucks my right TE got red again .... PS says its not cellulitis ... I would have pain fever and chills. I have none of that.... I'm taking antibiotics orally and the redness has gonna down but not completely... So game plan is this if by Friday the redness doesn't disappear I will have the TE remove.... Because I need to start radiation ASAP cause its been 2 months and half without radiation or herceptin.... So today I will call my Infectionist to get second opinion before any surgery.....

Hi, I just had my MX a week ago but had a question in ref to drain removal. I thought I might back up a month to get more feedback as I know ya'll are past where I am.  So here goes...I have a tentative appt today with surgeon in case I need to get any removed..but main fup appt is Tuesday. One, I know, is not ready does at least 50-70 per day (down from 110, though)..but the 2nd one has never done much. but has always been around 35. 2 days ago it didnt do anything, but my husband squeezed out lines as we thought might be clogged. so then I did about 30 in the next 24 hours..my question is..I think I could possibly go ahead and get this one taken out, but not sure if I should rush it as it is on the border of 30..if it was earlier in the week, I would keep for another day or so..however, Tuesday seems forever...butttt, I will still have this other in and would I be able to feel a difference without this one drain.  I am still taking lortabs due to it hurts where they go in at, plus other pain in top of where breast use to be..I've just heard horror stories of getting them out too soon.  Can anyone help with any advice..?  Greatly appreciated!

In the beginning it is hard to function with the drains but they really are your best friends. I had my in for 4 weeks and as eager as I was for them to go it was important to drain as much as possible. Even after my removal I had seromas and had to get them drained manually. I vote for keeping them in. :)

Hello all, I would also vote to keep those drains in as long as they are still working. I think each surgeon has a "magic" number as to where the cutoff is for the amount of fluid that is drained. I know mine wouldn't take them out with more than 30. Actually, one of mine came out the day after surgery, and then each one came out at a different time.

Am glad to hear that healing is taking place for many of you. I'm still treating an infection on my right side, but it is very very small. However the culture showed that it is a strep infection. Oncologist started me on an estrogen blocker this week. Am not looking forward to the hot flashes, leg cramps etc., but if that's what it takes so be it.

I have so much admiration for those of you who have had to return to work after the life altering surgery you've had. And many of you are taking care of families as well. It has certainly taught me not to whine about my situation. I'm retired, have no one but my dog at home and have a very very support significant other. Bless you all.

I think of you ladies on this page so often and pray and wish you all the best.

Wow Bishops...congratulations...so glad your exchange surgery went so well!!

(((Karrie))) I am so tired at the end of the day and I don't have little ones to care for all day at school or little ones at home...I used to be the family "nighthawk"...on the go til all hours at night and up at dawn, since this beast entered my life I don' t have half the energy but I'm hopeful that it will get better as the chemo wears off:)

mamasixtaz...didn't know you were an L&D nurse, that's my background as well! That is one fast paced job - wow:) I'm in an administrative role now, don't know if I have your strength to keep up with 12 hour shifts catching babies right now!

(((patriciahurtado))) - sure hope things settle down for you soon and you can get on with your treatment...I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers...

tparksprof - I started an aromatase inhibitor in March, right after surgery...knock on wood but so far so good, only some mild side effects like dry skin and joint pain, (motrin is my new med for pain) hope things go well for you:)

ckmoss - welcome to the board...I hated the drains and I had four of them but I have to agree with everyone else...no reason to rush to get the drains out, they are doing their job and draining the fluid out which is uncomfortable but necessary to heal, good luck...

Happy "Friday Eve" to all my surgery sisters...YAAY...it's gonna be a long weekend, hope you enjoy the holiday (((Healing Hugs))) Maureen

It has been a while and I know most of us have moved on to the next treatment or just plain recovery. I know I have after several weeks of dark days post op/chemo. All better now and did not know how tired and sad I felt for many weeks until now. But I am back at yoga daily, walking at least 5 k a day and even did two hikes last week. I had rads #12/28 today and so far so good. Summer off, no exchange until at least November.

I wish the best for all of you who went through surgery around the same time!

Marian...so good to hear from you...yes, I think we've all been "moving on", trying to get that little bit of normal back into our lives:) and even though I still visit all the boards that pertain to me this one, March Surgery "sisters", feels like a "home base" and I find myself still checking it for news and updates when I have time...all of you were there for me during some of my darkest days so there's a special place in my heart for you. Sorry to hear you had some "dark days"...this is a tough beast to fight! but sounds like you are feeling better? I haven't been able to get my activity back to "normal" yet - the aromasin has taken a toll on my joints so you are an inspiration - yoga, walking, hiking - wow! I need to get moving and I have faith that I will:) Take care...(((Hugs))) Maureen

Maureen-This board does seem like home base to me too even though I follow others too.  Nice to know a fellow L&D nurse!  I am the charge nurse on dayshift.  I have one administrative day for schedules, etc then work 3 days 12hrs on the L&D deck. Plus we are busy building a new hospital due to open in 2014, so it is very busy getting all the meetings in for that as well.  It's the busy season and nearly a full moon, Thursday and Friday was very busy, boy did I feel it!  I love my job and wouldn't want to trade it for anything, but it has been very hard coming back both physically and emotionally.  I really hurt by the end of it. It was hard helping my new mom breastfeed her newborn for the first time. I really hadn't thought it would effect me so much.   I will keep spacing my days to work the floor in order to get enough rest.  Plus I am keeping up with dialysis at home for DH.  Hope to get the energy level up soon.(LOL!)  Still waiting to start the fills, will see PS next week to see if incisions are good to go.  Seroma in back still a problem but will hope we get less this time as well.

Marian-Good to hear you are doing so well, good luck on the rest of the rads. Happy Memorial Day!  (HUGS) to all!

Mamasixtaz, you are the one doing well! I am impressed by all you do. I was a nurse long ago and if I had it to do again I would do LD. My first and last jobs were pre and post natal and I loved it. Now feeling very lucky to be retired and am in awe of you who work so soon after treatment.

Hope you all had a happy and restful Memorial Day:) I was reflecting on how different my life was last Memorial Day (BC = Before Cancer)...so much has changed since last year when I got my "completely normal - (yeah right)" mammogram results from May 25th and the family gathered for a carefree barbecue where my greatest concern was getting all the salads done on time but I am grateful for the spring and oncoming summer, gardens are in full bloom and days are longer, hope you are all doing well in spite of the "challenges" we face ...(((Hugs))) Maureen

I had my first TE fill today.  Yea!!! the incisions are healed and ready for the fills.  I am so glad to make progress as it has been 10 weeks since my bmx/LD flap.  PS said it was a long time to wait but we are moving forward.  On top of that the seroma in my back is down as well to only 30cc so we may be done draining that as well.  Just in time for the summer!  Ready to get back on track and enjoy the summertime. Cool Memorial day was just a restful weekend after a very busy exhausting week of work, so needed to get caught up.

Maureen- what a look back, it is such a different life and perspective we have since encountering and surviving the beast!

Well even though I feel like I am in drain hell as I have had them for 3 weeks on Friday and they are still putting out too much to come out, I was relieved in a strange sense to see many of your posts justifying their reasons and explaining some scary consequences  if they are taken out too soon. I find the area painful where the drains are (under my arm pit a few inches) and I feel like I have a sunburn where I wore my compression bra, I know they are not infected and I am trying to be at peace with them.

Despite my "peace offering", does anyone know if going to acupuncture will speed things up or help with pain management?

Also - for those of you sleeping in recliners, is your back killing you??  I rented an electric recliner to avoid needing to push when getting up (it totally helped) but now my mid backis killing me.  Could this be referred pain?  I have a gentle chair massage scheduled for tomorrow so I hope it helps as this back ache sucks.

Wishing everyone the best and sorry for the complaining.

    Barb

Denverbarb-Good to hear from you.  Sorry you have those drains for so long.  I also had mine for 3 weeks and still were draining but my PS would not leave them in due to infection risk. But I had more fluid build up and need removal by aspiration just in my back (Latissimus dorsi recon).  Moral is to keep those drains even though I hated them as well.  I loved my recliner but it was old and worn out.  Added pillows and could tip off of my back slightly to make it more comfortable even with back incisions.  It would get ache some but after moving in the morning I felt better.  Just made it to my bed at 6 weeks out.  Still not comfortable with the TEs.  Getting poked and prodded all night.

I don't know about acupuncture but alternatives are always a choice, be sure to let your PS know what you plan to do.

You are not alone in all the pain and feelings this is the forum to let loose, no apologizing, we have all been there.

Where did you have surgery?  I live in Parker outside of Denver, but work AT St Josephs downtown.  Hope you get to feeling better soon.  Once the drains are out all seems so much better!  Hope you are enjoying our nice weather.  Sending you healing (((HUGS!!)))

Patriciahurtado-so sorry you are having so much trouble. Infections make things take so much longer. I was worried about my flaps but they were fine. But incisons so red with the latest expander fill, worries me he put in too much too soon. I want this over but not at the expense to these poor incisions! Hope they can save your TEs if not give you another alternative. Hang in there we can make it through this!

Hello all, I must be a real dummy because I don't know what you are all talking about when you use TE or DoEP. Could someone give me a clue? Yes, Maureen this hormone blocker is really taking a toll on my joints. I have arthritis as it is, but this is really making it worse. Other than that I've not had much problem. Am still waiting for the hot flashes I was "promised".

To all of you with drains that you hate....listen to those who have been there...keep in as long as necessary. In the long run you'll be happy you did. I had drains after my BXM and then again after I had another surgery to repair some areas of infection and suture repair. Then after that I was hooked up to a wound vac. I felt like I had been tethered to something for 3 months. Finally am free of all that, but still have a small area of infection that I have to clean and dress everyday. This past weekend I had my "coming out party". Was able to use my prostheses and get dressed up for the first time in forever! I actually felt human again.

To all of you on this board, I think of you so often, and I too am trying to adjust to the new norm in my life. Be patient, God isn't done with you yet.

tparksprof-In breast reconstruction TEs are tissue expanders used to expand the tissue and muscle to make a pocket for the final implant.  DIEP is also a reconstruction procedure using tissue from the abdomen to make new foobs, not needing implants made of silicone or saline.  I had Latissimus Dorsi muscle moved from my back to the front with tissue expanders.  Once gradually filled to the size we need the tissue expanders are removed and replaced by implants made of silicone.  There are so many reconstruction options now available to those who choose reconstruction.

Sounds like you are healing well and feeling better.   My infection is clear and incisions healing well enough to expand my tissue expanders.  Ready to move on in this process to getting my permanent implants!

Hi there, seems I don't know my way around this discussion board yet. I'm due to get my port surgery Monday 6/10/13 I hate to admit I am a bit scared for what's ahead of me. Need to find some of you wonderful troopers out there that are due for Chemo in June. Just need some support. Hugs for every one out there. Love to hear from you
