Exercise - Working Back to it After or During Treatment

Hi Grit girl, this is midnight, thanks for the invitation to your exersise forum. I did think i posted here today, but i had trouble submitting, took for ever and then it hasn't done it. Hi girls that partcipate in here. i am from NZ, a kiwi and i was dx in 2011 and was telling Gritgirl and who ever was there that i was 51 going on 90. I am diabetic and will be soon joining a wellness programme that caters for people who are like me, diabetes etc, to get exersise, gently working into it, i am rather un motivated at present, have another mamo coming up in june, and a little worried about it. i think women have these fears, but i get told not to worry about it, as if it comes back, nothing you do will stop it and it makes me miserable, just deal with it when it does come, if it does, live my life and don't waste it worrying. i wish i could. and i don't think anyone who has not had cancer, really understands, even your close loved ones. perhaps it is a waste of time worrying and i should enjoy each day and i am thankful i have life, it just gets to this time and i do wonder what will come out of it. alot of you ladies are alot worse than me and i feel for you. i feel guilty that i worry. when i got off quite lightly at this stage. sorry to groan. thanks for reading. once i get into this other wellness programme and meet others, i may feel better.

Welcome, midnight. So I made myself do my Wii just dance and felt better. How are you all?
-
gritgirl - was spectacularly unmotivated all weekend - will be back to it starting tomorrow! Good for you doing a wii dance!
-
I'm motivated by cutting my anxiety and depression which high now. Crap keeps happening and that's got me worked up. Cancer ain't for sissies.
-
You got that right. Cancer aint' for sissies! But I still get angry or sad when I least expect it--or maudlin. I was measured for a sleeve for when I work my arms. I did play badmitten (I don't know how to spell that. LOL). My arm was a bit sore, but I really need a trainer, coach, or Marine sgt to kick my butt into motion.
-
Another load of boxes moved today.
-
Della, welcome. We do baby steps here so no Marines, unless they're cute. :-). Have you thought of yoga. What does your PT say?
Curveball. Good for you on the boxes.
I had to go to courthouse today but once I was excused by judge (tongue lashing first), I walked back to work. Nice little walk. Yesterday, I planted in garden. Every little thing counts. -
How is everyone doing? Specialk how is your knee?
Curveball, done with the move?
I got the dogs out for a walk tonight, which helped my anxiety. Dealing with depression. Waiting for Sam E supplement to clear out of my system so can take anti depressant. Calling uncle and taking drugs. -
@gritgirl, no boxes today. I'm not living at the new place yet, it needs some repair work done and I am in the process of settling what exactly I want to have done. The boxes are just going from the storage unit to the garage at the house. The next load will be going down there on Friday.
Today, I worked in the garden for an hour or so.
-
Della - hopefully you were fitted for a gauntlet or glove along with that sleeve - a compression sleeve should NEVER be worn without a gauntlet or sleeve or it may end up pushing lymphatic fluid into the hand, resulting in hand and finger lymphedema. Curve - if you've had nodes out be careful moving those boxes!
I know I sound like a broken record, but for everyone who is just starting out exercising or ramping it up after being inactive for treatment - if you've had any nodes removed, even a single node, you are at risk for lymphedema. The Step Up Speak Out website has some excellent guidelines on exercising safely after node removal: http://stepup-speakout.org/Handout%20doc%20for%20SUSO-040113.pdf
If you take an exercise class, here's a hand out you can give the instructor so they are aware of what you should and should not be doing: http://stepup-speakout.org/Trainer%20doc%20for%20SUSO-040113.pdf
Just another thing to worry about. As you said, Grit - Cancer ain't for sissies!!
But that said, don't let fear of LE keep you from exercising - LE precautions are easy to learn and to do, so get out there and get moving!
-
Hi all! It's been a while since I've posted, trying to wean myself off of BCO a bit, it was becoming a compulsion.
Gritgirl, what kind of dogs? Are they good on leash or do they tug?
Since last week, have gone walking when I can. If if I don't want to, I tell myself I only have to last 15 minutes but it turns into a 45-60 minute leisurely walk. Yesterday I had my restorative yoga and errands all afternoon so I didn't walk and my body felt it. -
gritgirl - still get the occasional knee twinge - but I did walk today - 5 miles at a pretty decent pace, but it rained on me! I stopped taking my diuretic (was prescribed during chemo for the massive swelling I had) and immediately gained 5 lbs. - yikes! So... I walked farther than I probably should have. Interestingly, my knee is fine but my hips hurt - who knows... I have gone back to MyFitnessPal because it does work for me - accountability is good for me, otherwise I graze. Do you have to get all the SamE out first before starting on something for depression? I am assuming there is an interaction - correct? That is a bummer because I would imagine that for a period you have nothing helpful in your system.
-
Hi gritgirl
Finally got over here. I had my family over for for the long weekend including the youngest grandchild a 6 year old. Lots of cooking housework etc. I was surprised how much I could do. Which has given the incentive to try getting back to exercise.
I love to swim but that has been really difficult lately. So I need to find a new gentle way of trying to get fit. We are dogless at the moment my old border collie sadly finally left us I do miss her so much I would love another dog but was unsure whether I was being fair to have another dog when I,am now so unfit. My Dh retires soon but I think he worries that he won't cope with a dog if I am unwell. I will have to convince him.
Anyway thanks for the invite gritgirl. Looking forward to tying to get a little fitter.

Nope, I didn't get a glove; in fact, no one mentioned it! I had planned to start walking this week, early in the morning, but now I have a sinus/ear infection. Ugh. Feel like crap! Hope for another day!!! BTW: I had lost five pounds!! Only 30 more to go to fit into the "scale" of perfect the doctor has. LOL. I also had my blood work for my cancer markers today. Say a prayer!!
-
Sounds like everyone is doing what they can, which is what this group is for. :-)
2nd-time, i have a pit bull, airedale mix, and a miniature schnauzer. they can be a handful to walk but i do it. sometimes it can be furstrating though.
specialk, yeah, there's an interaction with the SAM-E so had to wait until it was out of my system. I started back on my anti depressant two days ago. I apparently will be on the stuff for life.
Della: thoughts are with you as you wait for test results.
specialk: i also use myfitnesspal. i've been watching what i eat for a while now. i put on quite a few pounds from the treatment. i've lost some but apparently, i will lose no more. i think at this point i will accept my fat, middle aged body. as long as i work on being fit, that is all that matter. baby gonna have back. lottsa back.
-
Yesterday put a load of boxes in the car at the storage unit.
Today, took them out again at the new place. I also went and picked up my bike from the shop, but I haven't ridden it yet.
-
gritgirl - gotta do what you gotta do as far as the anti-depressants. You are not alone on that front - there are a lot of people who require them. I love MyFitnessPal so much but I think the predictions at the end of the day that say "if every day was like today you will weigh x in 5 weeks" are a bunch of crap for estrogen-suppressed, post chemo, post surgery or surgeries, lymphedema sleeve wearing, water retaining people! I feel ya on the baby got back thing, lol! However, tomorrow is another day, as Scarlett O'Hara says, right?
-
I look at it as long as I don't gain.
Today got in some walking and then working around. Plus, 3 flights of stairs, thanks to broken escalators. I'm a climbing machine.
Oh, and did I say cancer sucks? Bloody noses due to blood thinners. Yeah me. -
Cancer totally sucks. Sorry about the bloody noses - how are your platelets? Are they checking you periodically with a CBC?
-
Specialk. They checked my CBC on friday. Platelets were fine.
How is the knee? Are you able to do things now? I did yoga yesterday. It was very gentle and very helpful. -
I showed up for a 5k today and ran my slowest race time ever after a lifetime of running and winning my age group. But I got up, showed up, and ran - lymphedema sleeve, gauntlet, and reconstruction and all. I have to say I was loving the short hair instead of the bouncing pig tails I always had. I've been taking baby steps for months to get to this point.
-
Maria. Good for you. That is wonderful news. We're here to cheer you on. Think of that as your fastest time so far after cancer. :-)
-
maria and gritgirl - it is all about perspective - love the "fastest race after cancer" - perfect!
Knee is good - I wore kitten heels yesterday, no problems! Of course, I was mostly sitting down, lol! I had no issues after the 5 mile walk so I am cautiously optimistic. I am going out to walk shortly because we have had very stormy weather that happens in the afternoon/evening. Don't know if I can do 5 miles again because it is pretty hot and sticky and my LE arm gets aggravated, but I will go as far as I am comfortable with. It has reached the point inthe year where the air-conditioned treadmill becomes my friend. I am trying to sweat as much as I can to assist with normalizing after coming off the diuretic, but I have my limits! Glad you enjoyed the yoga! I have a yoga DVD I need to break out - also a pilates one that has been collecting dust - I can do those in the air-conditioning too!
-
Mariasnow: That is fantastic! I am proud and envious at the same time. LOL!
-
one more load of boxes into the car.
-
Curveball, good for you. That's great exercise.
Today was an easy-going day. I did about 20 minutes of gardening and that was it. That's OK. I got a massage and my nails done instead. -
Hi all
It's a beautiful day here. Hopefully that will inspire me to go for a walk and do some gardening.
Mara -
Mara. Even a walk down to the corner store counts. :-)
-
Thanks for the encouragement gritgirl wil get up and at it.
Will let you know later
Bye
Mara -
Today I felt motivated (must have been you, Mara). I did some and some gardening. Now I'm pooped.
