This is one of my first posts, about 5 years ago (before I was even "everyminute"), right after surgery at MSK and still waiting for treatment options.

Here I am 5 years later. My older daughter is engaged and living on her own and my younger daughter just finished her first year of college!   Celebrating 5 years by running my 9th marathon (I ran my first one two years after I was diagnosed) along with Kerry and Jackie. My husband and I are empty nesters (til the summer) and are really happy.

I live in a state between denial and reality most of the time -I don't count on the future but I hope for it, sometimes I even forget and DO count on it.  Most of the time I am ok until the anniversaries come around.  I made the mistake of looking for good news after the 5 year mark which is like fishing for compliments - never turns out quite how you'd like it.

I am thrilled to be here, life is good.  I am not depressed, just a little meloncholy I guess.

Dearest Mary, Congratulations on this huge milestone . 5 yrs is HUGE for us. Feeling  melancholic is quite normal around anniversaries as it hashes up all those scary memeories.

However,  your running has truly upped your chances expotentially of never encountering the beast again.

     Good for you!

Enjoy your beautiful life and family.

Mary- Five years, congratulations! It is tremendous to read back five years ago that you never though you would be here...and here you are.

Yes, I think we all understand melancholy, re-living the dark days.  But yours is a story of hope and conquering your fears, and living in every minute. You are an inspiration, speedy lady. Long may you run! :)

Right there with you "Sister", denial and reality sums it up perfectly.  I love how you posted your older post.  Keep on running and soon you'll be posting about some grandkids. Congratulations on the Big 5!

These anniversaries do bring back the memories.  I hang in that limbo, denial/reality, too, most of the time. 5 years is wonderful.   Thanks for keeping us in the loop and sharing your good times.

I read both posts. Everything you wrote resonates with me. Both the denial/reality as well as fishing for compliments. I have to believe that passing the 5 year mark reduces your risk of recurrence significantly. I believe I've read elsewhere that half of recurrence occurs within first two years following active treatment.

    Thanks for posting

    Mary,

You've got more zest for life and energy than anyone I know, and you have inspired so many to get fit and stay fit. Congratulations and keep inspiring!
