I am so glad your surgery went well for you and very happy about the clean node! Sending prayers in ref to your pathology report!
-
Yay Ann, drains are a pain but each day will be better. Take care and rest up.
-
sorry ckmoss. Wasn't trying to make you feel like you have the tough surgeon.
Ann, glad everything went well. Prayers that we all get good pathology results!
-
Mind if I stick my head in here? I came home from my double mastectomy on Saturday; surgery was last Wednesday the 15th. I got 2 drains out today, but the drains on the side I had the lymph nodes removed are still way too productive to be removed. I had 28 lymph nodes removed, luckily only 2 were cancerous.
I am tired, and the drains cause a lot of discomfort. Still getting pieces of tape/glue off my skin; luckily I can shower; just hang my drains on a lanyard with pins. But the pain is manageable and I am sleeping well, which is amazing, since I've never been able to sleep on my back before.
As far as pathology goes, as I said 2 cancerous lymph nodes, and all the tumors are completely gone. So, WHEW!
Thanks for listening!

Hi Laurie, glad you are doing well. Drains are a pain, had mine in for two weeks after my bmx. Most important is to just rest up and your energy will pick up but dont overdo it.
-
GoWithTheFlow...lol..I really like my surgeon..he is one of the best around, but he is def old school. Do miss baths..but actually I am not completely ready to look at where my breast was. My BA says I shouldn't look at it at first dead on in mirror..to try and and look down a bit at a time. I really would like to never see it ever..but know that is unrealistic. Did any of ya'll have issue with that?
Laurie2025..That is wonderful news! Tip for the tape/glue stuff...get a cotton ball and put some cooking oil..canola, whatever..on it and hold it on the left over sticky on your skin for a min or two..then rub..should come off
-
ckmoss, I can actually see a lot with bandages on. There is a one inch wide strip of gauze, with clear coating about 3 inches wide over that, all the way from under arm to under arm. I'm actually surprised that I don't care. Is is my age? I'm 48. Or maybe it's just because I know it was my choice to do a double mastectomy instead of a lumpectomy on one breast. With how quickly it grew, I didn't want to take a chance with my life. Who knows if I'd find it quickly next time and anything I could do to lower my chances of it coming back, I was willing to do.
Laurie, that's a lot of nodes. So happy for you that only two showed cancer. That's great news. My surgeon is hoping to have the results of my 6 tomorrow, otherwise it will be tuesday because of the 3 day weekend.
-
Grow- thanks, im hoping it does too!
Ckmoss- its those small things in life like showering that make all the differnce! lol
Ann- Congrats on having clean nodes! Speecy recovery. -
Hi,had my surgery on May 14th,had one drain ,and it came out yesterday...still very sore.took all lymph nodes, with 1 being cancerous..waiting on chemo dr. to call. And yes this has been a journey,or should i say nightmare..but i have to deal with this..i tell everyone just get your mamagrams.I missed mine last year, and keep wondering what i did .No lump ..nothing..This site has really helped me,and i read what the other girls have to say..My husband seems to think i should use my arm ,so it doesnt get stiff or what ever.Im still not sure what to do..thanks
-
GoWithTheFlow-Its not your age..I'm 47..I think its just different for everyone. My tumor was sizable 4cm, but according to everyone very slow growing and so I did try lumpectomy..oncologist said..oh lumpectomy with 10 rounds rads and you will be good!..I did lump..week later, surgeon released me..went back to oncologist (thought I was going back to work the next day) and he said still cells in margins and 1 lymph..he said I didn't have to MX we could try again..but, I was so crushed and scared to do surgery and it be the same news..plus, even though I have D cup. the first had dented pretty good..so I said lets just do MX..it came back there were no cells at all left in breast..and only 1 more lymph had cells..but, I'm ok with that..somewhat..I know it would have been disfigured by then anyway..but having time adjusting to this.
Kayezzy66- I have had surgeon, oncologist, BA ..everyone preach over and over to make sure the first week to elevate 45 min and clinch fist 15 times..bend elbow back and forth..then after that do wall excersises..you don't want to get that frozen shoulder. But, you aren't suppose to start any kind of ex. until the 2nd week and dr oks. Ive been doing the elbow /fist thing from the first day..I still have tightness a bit..but now they only took 7 lymphs so not sure what yours should be.

OOhh! I almost forgot!! Yesterday evening we had had a thunderstorm..once it was almost through..the sun came out but was still raining. The widest most brilliant rainbow formed from across our road sideways into our yard..it really ended on the side of your front yard! I have never seen one that close to the ground or where it ended..much less in my yard..I am taking this as the best sign ever!
-
I think that rainbow is a GREAT sign. We had a storms come through but I was too out of it to look for a rainbow. Thanks for doing that for the rest of us.
-
Ckmoss: My BS said I could shower but not bathe. I just used a shower chair in the tub and the hand shower until the drains came out. I took my first real shower last night and it felt soooo good!!
Glad you are home AnnBR. I hope all goes well for you. You have a similar dx as me. I'm waiting on the Oncotype dx test results to see what treatment I will benefit from. Hopefully all I will need is the anti hormonal pill. -
Day 2 and I am so itchy - everywhere. Does anyone else have this problem? I didn't experience it last Dec. with my first MX.
Ann -
I'm itchy. Not everywhere, but itches on my face, my shoulders and especially my back. I had gotten a gift basket from a friend about two months ago, for post surgery needs. One of the items is one of those bamboo back scratchers. OMG, it's great. Try to find just a cheap one. Use it from the waist up, not over your shoulder. It's helped a lot with itching. Might just be from tape, sweating, and meds. If yours is all over, I'd be concerned about an alergic reaction to something.
I feel like crap today. Threw up this morning, weak legs, nausea. Just spoke to my surgeon. He said they almost didn't so the surgery because my potasium was low. I took a zofran left over from chemo, ate a banana, and will try to get a potasium pill cut up small enough to take it (those things are enormous). I think I need a nap first though.
-
Thank you cjmoss..i return to the dr. the 29th,and see what he says...and i do use my arm..im a righty, and its hard not too.lol
-
I love rainbows...
-
GoWithTheFlow sorry you are feeling so bad today, hope it doesn't last long. I'll have my husband pick me up a back scratcher today!
-
GoWithTheflow..I hope you feel better soon!
AnnBR-The first day and a half after surgery I itched everywhere! My surgeon said that morphine and lortabs do that..of which I had both. The past two days I quit taking percocets and have been taking lortab..as percocet makes me feel sick/draggy/miserable..and lortabs haven't started me itching, so it must have been the morphone for me. If it doesn't go away soon it could be allergic though, like GoWith said. My first day I was here for a short time by myself and didn't have backscratcher..if you have one of those plastic things you lift out spaghetti pasta with that has fingers on it..works wonders!
Kayezzy66- I love them too! I am lefty, but have found with this that the only thing I do with my left hand is write.
It looks like we are in for some gorgeous weather for the weekend here. I LOVE to garden and I am sooo wanting to get out and weed..as that calms my nerves.!
-
I talked to my surgeon this morning and he told me that my potassium was low. In fact, they considered putting off my surgery. So, I took an anti-nausea pill, ate a banana, cut a potassium pill in 1/4s and took two of them (saving the other 2 for later) and I'm feeling better.
But the best is the surgeon just called me back and everything from pathology was clear. Nothing in nodes, nothing in breast tissue (remember, I've already had chemo). I just started sobbing. I'm so happy that the chemo did, in fact, kill off the cancer cells. I didn't realize how much that was worrying me until I got the results.
-
I'm really happy for you gowiththeflow!!! I felt the same way when I got my news too. God is good!!
-
I agree, God IS good. That's wonderful news and is a great start to a long weekend!
-
WOW! That is awesome news! You were right the rainbow was a GREAT sign!!!!
-
Hooray Ann- you got through the dreaded day! So happy for you.
Your lymph node report is fabulous and I'll pray for an equally fabulous patho report.
Hugs to you,
Cheri -
Gowiththeflow....congrats on the great pathology report!!!! I sure bet you're breathing a whole lot easier!!!! Keep eating those bananas!!!
Weirdness update ...last night my skin felt as though I had a bad sunburn ( only from my armpits down to beneath my breasts ). At times i felt as though i had the flu...It was explained to me that my superficial nerve endings were on over drive. The good thing is that by this morning the feeling for the most part went away.
I may have missed this side effect of the surgery on BCO but wanted others that may experience it to know that this is apparently normal and short lived.
Best,
Cheri -
Finally got the itching under control and then I took a pain pill on an empty stomach. I know better than that! Lying here fighting off waves of nausea. This too shall pass....
-
The skin over my TEs have a constant feeling of sunburn. I hope it will go away soon. I feel numb under my arms.
-
Ann, I would let your doc know about the itching. Some can be normal but it can also be a reaction to medications. After my lumpectomy I was super itchy and discovered I had hives which meant I was allergic to the pain med. They tried others and now I have one that gives me minimal itching but no hives. They said it was normal and suggested I take benedryl when I take the pain med. I am not telling you to do that - only to speak with your physicians as they usually want to know any and all reactions you have.
I got my pathology report earlier in the week and found that my right breast had 2 other areas of DCIS that mammo and MRI did not pick up so am so relieved I elected for BMX so I won't be going through all this any more. And since my node was clean- no chemo, radiation or tamoxifen. Left breast was normal tissue.
I am surprised at how tired I am two weeks out. I am supposed to return to work in June but wonder if I can. Taking a shower makes me tired and I am taking 1-2 naps a day (and not using narcotics for pain management). This is a lot harder recovery than the lumpectomy. I try to take brief walks to build stamina but am not good at sitting around. Anyone else having this problem?
And worst of all, we have had to send our daughter to sleepovers and playdates 2 weekends in a row cuz I am no worn out and unable to attend to her as per usual. Although my husband is there, she wants her mommy back.
