Hi,

Thanks,Peg

Scarves have become very fashionable items and are available in all fabrics and sizes in almost any department or discount store, even Target. If you want a pre-tied scarf or one made for hair loss, check out your local mastectomy boutique. There are also numerous on line sources including TLC ( American Cancer Society) and sites that specialize in head coverings for religious reasons. Plain cotton bandanas come in a multitude of colors and are cheap and easy to find. Good luck!

You can just use regular ones. I bought them everywhere, from thrift stores to Macys. There are lots of tutorials online for tying the various sizes. I had long ones I'd wrap around a few times and let fall back or circle up into a bun, and shorter squares to tie around at the nape, or top, of my head. I have lovely vintage scarves and $1.00 bandanas from Walmart and everything in between.
I do find that one of those hair halos from TLC gives a more natural appearance if you care about that. I bought one to wear with scarves and it's not as uncomfortable as a wig but gives the illusion of bangs and hair at the bottom for times when you don't want to be "that cancer patient".
I also bought a lot of fun clips and flower pins and stuff to put on the scarves. I got tons of compliments.
Good luck. You can have some fun with it.
Edit: I wanted to add the only pre-tied one I ever bought was too big for me when I was bald. Wait before buying them if you think you might have a small head.

Hi Peg2,
There's also a great thread here called Head Covering Options for Hair Loss in the Chemotherapy forum that could be of great help!
Hope this helps,

The one I get the most compliments with is a white cap from walmart 3.99 that is a little to big but it is made to come down lower than a regular ball cap. I tie a long scarf that I got from Burkes outlet for 3.99 around the top of cap with thebow in the back to make it fit sungley. I have several colors of scarves to match the clothing i am wearing.
I very seldom go out without someone complimenting me on the hat and scarf. The problem is the heat now. I need a hat with air vents. I was riding in a boad with a red cap made of cotton from tlc and a scarf tied around it to hold it on with my sun glasses on and my 25 year old daughter made the comment that I looked like a Diva. Ha I'm 56 years old.
Good luck in shopping. Have fun with this. I never thought of myself as a hat person until now.

correction I was riding in a speed boat.

There is a site called Goodwishes....don't know the actual webpage, but think if you google it, it will come up. They have expensive head coverings, BUT will send you one for free, all you have to do is fill in a form. Also, check out Look Good, Feel Good classes in your area....they show you tricks you can do with head coverings (the one I went to made one out of a t-shirt), sometimes provide one and also give you lots of free makeup.
I got some really nice bandanas at Joanne Fabrics...they had just about every color and were cheap. Also wig shops, sell the head coverings, but you really can't get one there for less than $20

Hi Peg
If you want to PM me,I will happily send u some scarves. I never got into Them, more of a hat girl myself. Would love to pass them on to someone who can enjoy them.
Cheers,

Thanks to all of you, some great suggestions. I did go to Goodwishes and will get the free scarf but now that I think about it, I'm not a scarf person either. I didn't know what I was and didn't expect to have to decide!!!! I ordered a wig because my insurance will cover it and I do have to work; bit it is too hot!!! I will probably just pick up some baseball hats and use the scarf thing around it like Bev 22, sounds cute and more like me. i also signed up for Feel Good, Live Well the end of July.
Everyone stay cool.

Hello Peg,
Last winter I visited American Cancer Society office (look in the phone book or ask your onclogist's nurse for info).
I found friendly, helpful volunteers (American Cancer Society is almost entirely volunteers) who were more than happy to fit me with a wig and all sorts of caps & scarves -- all for FREE!! Members of local churches and such enjoy knitting & crocheting to help us to feel comfortable & better about our self-image.
I knew about this service because I volunteered for ACS's "Reach to Recovery" program. We who had just had a mastectomy/lumpectomy visited women who'd just had the surgery. We took moral support, exercise info, where to find a prosthesis or recommended a reconstructive doctor to these women. It helped me to feel better about myself after surgery. Unfortunately, my LCIS metastasized after 20 years. Now I'm TNBC Stage IV.
We are never "cured!"
Hope this helps! Adriennek

Look good, feel better is a great class and you'll get lots of freebies. Although specialized stores and web sites sell scarves and hats for cancer patients you can find things that work at any store like Target or Walmart. You don't need to spend a great deal of money at all.

Hi peg2
I went through chemo 12 years ago and there wasn't as much around then as there is now, scarves are fashionable and you can buy them just about anywhere and they are inexpensive. Try the department stores they should have a good range
When I went to buy my first one, they only had one in the store. The sales girl asked me why I wanted it and I was honest as to why - so she took hers off and gave me hers as well. It was a touching gesture I thought

Hi Peg2, not sure if you still need this info. When I went thru chemo years ago what worked best for me were colorful bandanas (which you can get rather inexpensively almost anywhere now) around the house and had a couple hats from TLC (as mentioned previously) that I would wear over them. Similar for more formal occasions: beautiful hats atop pretty scarves (tied in back under hand with the ends flowing down my back).
Bev 22, you remind me of a similar funny experience. My brother was getting married some months after chemo complete, hair just starting to grow back, peach-fuzz state, not pretty enough for the wedding (didn't want to be scaring anyone there. My brother and his wife would have been horrified by my bald head). The wedding was in Malibu on PCH. My BIL and his wife were watching the kids in Santa Monica and very nicely offered us the use of his convertible to take to the wedding. So, of course, DH, needed to drive with the top down, it was April, not too warm, beautiful for the convertible - IF I hadn't been wearing a hat. You guessed it - had to drive about half hour clutching my hat to my head for dear life! Didn't care what happened on the drive home (frankly, can't remember what happened to the hat, it was 16 years ago!)
Hope you're both doing well now! -
My favorite store to by head scarves is actually http://www.myheadcoverings.com/. The reason I keep on going back there is beacause they have a huge selection of pre-tied head scarves, snoods, hats, berets, etc. and lots of their products actually cater to women with hair loss since they provide full covering. In addition they have untied head scarves which you can tie yourself and they even provide a detailed tying guide with many different ways and ideas to tie your head scraf yourself. Check it out, I'm sure you'll agree with me!
