Hi everyone. Glad all seems to be coming along well for most. I had a pretty bad day today. I wasn't in any pain or anything I was just miserable and depressed. I don't know why. I am very blessed, but toay was just a bad day for me. I getting so tired of having to lay on my back so much and it was so hot today I couldn't get outside too much. Anyway, I just wanted to vent a little. You all are in my prayers and I hope everyone has an easy journey.

I was told that the tissue that is removed after a mastectomy is hormone retaining. I woke up one day and felt very down, a feeling I never had before. It takes a while for your hormones to rebalance and that was the best explanation I heard for the way I was feeling. When I asked my BS about it she said she did agree with that explanation. It still makes perfect sense to me. It took about 6-7 months but I feel almost normal again. I hope this info helps.

Blogger, that's interesting.  Maybe I won't have an issue because I had my thyroid removed two years ago (thyroid cancer was my "cancer" introduction.

Chinney, I hope you have a better day tomorrow.  Sometimes all it takes is an ice cream or a conversation with a good friend.

oh bamboogirl, thank you SO MUCH for your message.  walking is my exercise of choice too so it gives me loads of hope to know i'll likely be able to walk right after. i'll take it slow but being able to move around will help so much. i live about 20min walk from the hospital so may even try to walk home.  and only ~6 days w drains? that's better than i hoped.

katiekabooo - Don't worry about the drains... I had my surgery May 2nd... I had 4 drains.  Five days later they removed 2 drains - didn't hurt at all!!!  I still have 2 drains in and am hoping to get them out this Monday.  I had to have a full axillary dissection on my left side so that's probably why my output is still high.  They are annoying but very managable... so don't be discouraged if you don't get them out in 5 days.  EVERYONE is different.

Suzan... I don't have a start date for Chemo yet.  I am meeting with another Oncologist today for another opinion.  I didn't get a warm feeling from the first so I hope I click with this one. I was told from the first Oncologist he would give me a month to heal.  I have had a difficult time adjusting to the TE's...burning, pulling. The first oncologist said I need 8 rounds over a 16 week period.  How about you?  Have you had your port put in yet?  I'm feeling very nervous about that and was hoping to hear from someone who has had it done.

kayezzy, glad to hear you are doing well.  Getting a bit anxious for my surgery next week.  Run4Us, I had a port put in back in january (it will come out next week when I have my mastectomy).  It was a little sore when laying on my side in bed for a bit, but not horrible.

RUN4US, if i do the math right, two of your drains are still in a full 14 days later.  that is a lot longer than i was expecting.  i am glad to hear it is manageable though.  UGH, i am not looking forward to this.

Thanks blogger that makes so much since. I feel much better today. I went for my first post-op appointment today, Day 8, and had one drain removed. Looks like I'll have the others at least until Monday. I go to the PS on Monday and I'm hoping and praying I get the other three out.

kayezzy - I'm glad all went well for you.

I decided on silicon implants, per the recommendation from my BS. The flap type reconstructions have a much longer hospital stay and more risk of infection. Plus the recovery is longer. I had immediate reconstruction and could not be happier with my choice.

So I am approaching a week post op and feel so much chest tightness it is pretty uncomfortable.  I don't feel "spasms" which is what I understood the muscle relaxant to be for but it's not exactly sharp pain either.

Do others have this too?  If so, how are you managing it?

    Barb

PS to make matters worse I think our 6 year old is getting sick so instead of going off to play at friends' houses she will be home and sort of interfereing with my rest :(

Well just got a call. My PS appointment has been changed until Thursday, so gotta keep then drains until then. At least I only have to make the one two hour trip next week instead of two. I see the oncologist on Thursday as well. Hope everyone has a great day!!

Barb - I had immediate reoconstruction with silicon implants. Three weeks out, now. The chest muscles are more relaxed around the implants and I don't feel like I have cement blocks bolted to my chest anymore. I do still have pressure, though. I think it gets better and is all normal.

Katiekabooo - Yes you are correct 2 of my drains have been in for 2 weeks.  My RS said everyone is different and  that it doesn't mean anything is wrong.  Yes they are a pain but not because they hurt as much as they are uncomfortable.  I just don't like having the drains under my clothes... I feel like I look strange if I go out.

I had my BMX drains in for two weeks and my recon surgery drains in for only 5 days. All depends on what work they do during the surgery. I agree they are more of a discomfort as long as you dont catch the tubing on something that smarts.

Barb, the tightness can be relieved tremendously by physical therapy-like exercises. Ask your PS or nurse to show them to you. After my surgery I was give a number of exercises to do 5x a day every day, and I'm happy to say I have full range of motion in my arms and my chest doesn't feel so tight throughout the day. Good luck!

Hello ladies! I'm back from my BMX on Tuesday and I'm feeling pretty great! The worst part was the wait leading up to the day of the surgery. My SNB came back disease free so now I'm waiting on pathology. I have more range of motion than I anticipated and was able to wash my hair pretty well ( doesn't look great but wow I looked a mess walking into the shower ).

The best thing is that when I stand up nothing dangles!!! They are rock solid and lumpy but I know that's temporary.

For those of you that have had lumpectomies prior to the upcoming BMX - there's not a big difference.

I was forewarned about the SNB injection being the worse part of the whole thing. If you've ever had a TB test ( a very superficial dermal injection ) it feels a lot like that followed by a burning sensation that lasts no longer than 20 seconds( I counted and did deep breathing exercises during it) and it was done

I'm only 3 days into recovery but I'd do it again. Piece of mind is a great thing,

This site has been so enormously helpful - not sure if my recovery would be going as well without it.

I am really glad that I took the time to read all of the different experiences that we've all had - it is important to know that everyone experiences pain uniquely.

My biggest words of advice....a). Stay ahead of the pain ( Valium helps the muscle spasms Esp w/ TEs and I am taking Percocet for the pain). 2) don't over do it when the pain killers are working - you may regret it later. 3) water, protein and fruits and veggies help the healing process move along,

Good luck to the rest of you who are up next,

The drains are pretty annoying but manageable ( I only have 2 though) I sleep in a tank top w/ them clipped to it or tucked into pockets of a zip up running jacket during the day.

I'm pretty loopy right now but wanted to write before I forgot the little details.

Oh and feel free to let the pre op nurse know you get a bit nauseous w/ anesthesia and they'll probably put a Zofran patch behind your ear ( I had zero issues w/ nausea this time around because of the patch)

    Sorry this is so wordy

Cheri1859 Happy to hear your doing so well after surgery, my turn was to be be in two weeks (31st) not sure what Im doing now

Today was awfully rough. Got a phone call while at work from insuance to be informed that they will pay for my left MX and reconstruction but not my right MX because there is no cancer in right. I thought by law they have to. Well needless to say I lost it at work, first time I really broke down and cried.

Afterwards I did speak with another person at insurance and they said I could appeal decision takes about 4-8 wks for decision. SO now I have more to stress about do I go ahead as scheduled and pray after the fact they approve the appeal, or do I just have left done now, or wait 4-8 wks to have both UGGGGHH!

Cheri- Congrats and wishing you a continued speedy and uneventful recovery!

Catey- So sorry that you are going through that! The stress of cancer and then surgeries are enough to deal with let alone how we are going to pay for treatment! Hope you are able to appeal their decision.

Im a week out from my first MX on the cancer side and starting to get scared. Hubby will be with me the first couple of days but he works out of town and is home on weekends so Ill be on my own with the kids when he has to return to work. My mil is coming to stay but she is 81 and uses a cane so I worry about putting to much stress on her helping me out. So grateful for this board and all of you sharing your experiences, thanks!

Those who have had their surgery already, how bad is it when you get out?  I'm asking because with my surgery date quickly approaching, I"m wondering if my 15 year old son should come with us to the hospital and keep my husband company.  On one hand, I think it's important to keep him in the loop and for him to realize what's going on and see that I'm going to be okay, his state testing is over, so he shouldn't miss much at school for one day, and with no family in town (and my request to let me get through this with just my husband and son and see how I feel before people come to stay with us), I think it would be a good distraction for my husband.

On the other hand, I don't want him to freak out if I come out looking horrible.  I did bring him to chemo during one treatment.  He sat with his head in his video game, but I know he absorbed what was going on because that's how he is.  It's awkward to discuss with him that I'm having my breasts removed (for him, not for me), but   I want to use this time as family bonding time.  We're in this together, we'll fight together, we'll survive together.

    So, what are your thoughts?

Gowiththeflow, I didnt think it was bad. My 12 yr old was there when I came out of recovery. She wasnt there during the surgery but a good friend hung out with my DH. If your DS handled the chemo visit I dont see why he couldnt hang with your DH if they have a decent relationship already.

I'm so glad I found this thread!  I'm scheduled for bilateral mastectomies on 5/28/2012 (the right will be a prophylastic) by a general surgeon and  with reconstructive expanders to be placed by the plastic surgeon.  Was told I will have 4 drains which i'm dreading and also some tubes for pain management that will last 4 or 5 days which I'm happy about lols.    I thought all the drains were for the mastectomies and didn't think to ask.  It helps so much to connect with others going thru the same thing.

Saw someone else was also scheduled for 5/28 but now I can't find their post.

thanks iatigger.  I spoke to both of them separately, and after I call and make sure he's not missing anything important at school, he will come to the hospital with us Wednesday.

Oh, I do want to ask a couple of questions.  I have been torn about whether to get the reconstructions.  Is it worth all the extra surgery and recovery?  In the end, I have scheduled the reconstruction because I'm too scared not to.  I know I will not be happy with prosthetics as I don't even like to wear a bra much less removable boobs.  Just being flat  was a probable option, but as I said I will too scared of this great unknown.  Did anyone else have trouble making this decision?

Second, since losing my DH last year (to cancer), I live alone. Will trying to do too much delay healing time.  How incapacitated are you after surgery?  As I got the vaccum cleaner out today, I thought--wow it's over 5 lbs so I guess I won't be cleaning the floors for awhile, etc.  (will I be able to sweep instead?)  Several friends have offered to help but just how much am I going to have to intrude?   My sister plans on being here for a while after surgery but I hate for her to feel obligated to remain longer than is necessary.   How long before one can lift over 5 pounds, or take out the trash, or carry groceries, etc.  I arranged for yard service but maybe I should be looking at more.

    TIA for your insights.

    Marlene

Mshelton, having just gone through the swap to squishies this week I have to say the second surgery was much easier than the first. I have no regrets having the reconstruction. I had my TE's in for 6 months and the PS took time to fill so I did not have the pain like some do when the PS rushes and overfills. Like any surgery you dont want to over do it give yourself time to heal and follow your doctors orders on lift restrictions. Take people up on their offers to help. They shouldn't be offering if they don't mean it.  I am loving not having to wear a bra in the summer for as long as I can remember. Makes my clothing options go a whole new direction without worrying about bra straps.  I don't think you will be disappointed with your decision in the end.

    Hi Everyone!

Just had BMX with recon May 15th... feelin' better every day.  I have 4 drains and the TEs- so far so good.  Once I figured the best way to manage the pain meds, all was great in the world!  How is everyone else doing who had surgery this week?

    Hey There Marlene!

I would definitely take your sister up on staying with you.  I am actually very comfortable right now and it has only been 3 days, but you never know.  Don't push yourself, you may regret it in the end.  There was no question in my mind that I was going to have recon, just for my own benefit- I want to look as much like myself as I can, but that's everyone's own personal opinion.  To me, recon was important and, since they can put the expanders in in the same surgery as the mastectomy, it was a no-brainer for me.  I feel great about the decision I made, no regrets at all... but this is only a few days in.  Best of luck to you.
