I was in hospital for UMX and DIEP for five days and wouldn't you know, the worst of it is back pain. I am stopped over like an old lady. I can barely walk! Is this normal? I had this lower back pain with both my pregnancies andir went away. Could this be related to surgery, or being on my back for too long in th w hospital? I am sleeping in a recliner. Sitting is fine, walking is another! Not easy to run around after to little ones with this problem!

Anyone else out there experiencing same?

Back pain is extremely common following DIEP surgery and will eventually get better. Getting up and walking is a great way to help get it back in shape but don't overdo, either. You will likely be a bit stooped when you stand up and that is also normal and will get better.

Talk to your Dr about a muscle relaxer if it's too painful, and take your pain meds on schedule so the pain doesn't get ahead of you. Warm, moist heat is also great. Hang in there and take advantage of any help you can find until you start feeling better.

I had bilateral mastectomy with DIEP in Oct 2012 and the day before that had lung surgery to remove a nodule.  Was in the hospital 10 days and slept in a recliner for a very long time.  Be patient....I too was stooped over for a while...which is very normal....but you will stand straight again.  I had terrible back pain and sometimes I still get sore.  I found physical therapy to help both the pain and the posture.  Physical Therapist said this type of surgery (breast and belly) really weakens all of the abdominal muscles so we work a lot of stretching and strengthening.  I agree with Ysa above...don't overdo  it.
