reishe grows around here. I had one once but had no idea what it was & the mice ate all the good parts. a project to go hunting for another has been on my adgenda for sometime, glad you reminded me

I am totally ignorant about fresh mushrooms, but my integrative oncologist has me taking 2 mushroom supplements: shitake and chaga. I may be wrong, but I think I remember reading that chaga mushrooms are indigenous to Siberia? At any rate, he's a strong believer in both of these.

Fredntan.....thank you for starting this thread!!!!!! I have read a lot about various mushrooms and consume many types .....just started Turkey Tail but can only get the tincture at my health food store!!!
-
i saw youtube of guy hunting chaga in conn.they grow in large clumps high up in trees. according to thevideo
-
Ha! Well, I guess if the chaga is growing in CT, then whatever I heard about Siberia might not be so true-- but it does sound a whole lot more exotic !

Chaga and maitake are two that seem to have some backing scientifically. Maitake has the best and most research in my opinion. It has been the subject of some recent clinical trials. It (maitake D extract) appears to boost the immune system. No definitive word though on what impact that has on cancer patients, although some hospital studies claim it was effective in stopping cancers. More research is needed.
-
I started taking maitake in 2004 the first time I had ca. What I read about it was it was the only one (at that time) that worked by taking a pill as opposed to infusion. There was study where they gave half the dose of chemo and half the dose of maitake and it reduced the cancer more than each individual treatment at the full dose. It does a lot of things; builds immunity and attacks cancer in two different ways which if I remember correctly it outright kills it plus it causes it to kill itself (apoptosis?).
-
Will ask my mushroom hunting guide about Maitake. I'm going next wed. He's going to teach me how to find them in woods.
-
I've been looking for Chaga growing on the Birch trees here in Manitoba. Done a lot of looking and haven't found any so far. Must be less than 1 in 1000 trees that have it.

Hello all,
I'm just checking in after a visit to a naturopathic doc. I'm looking for suggestions to try to fortify my body before chemo.
I was also ready doing supplements such as vitamin d, b12, c, omega3, coq10 and tumeric. But he also suggested some other things including mushroom extracts...
He ays to take some products called "stamets 7", "five ganoderma" and "mycosoft."
Anyone have any experience with these?
Thank you,
Kay

not familiar with those
but you can grow your own mushrooms. i googled it. looks simple. just need fresh log, drill, wax and of course the mushroom spores. i bought log this weekend. they produce every two weeks. -
thank you fredntan! I had no idea. I'll look into it...

i am thinking of ordering from www.fungi.com
this is paul staumos site-not sure if i spelled his name right. but he is from Host defense. there are some youtubes of him.
they have combo mix of the spores three for 30something. that gives you 300 spores.
I could start selling them. i paid 6 for half pound of reishi mushrooms at farmers market. my log was 35 -
I went on my Mushroom hunt with SteveHaas today. He is a mushroom expert. www.stevehaasmushrooms.com
I learned how to spot turkey tails. they were everywhere in forest. not for eating. you dry them and make tea of these.
found wood ears. pretty easy to spot. he said these are best in soups.
got some logs of oyster mushrooms from him. his were much cheaper at 20/log.
Told me something I didn't know. mushrooms need to be cooked. those raw mushrooms on salads don't do any good.

Actually, chaga grows on 1 of 15,000 trees.

While we are back on this topic, here is a good article you can download the full pdf on
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26770080
It's entitled immune modulation of five major mushrooms: Application to Integrative Oncology.
They list reishi, maitake and turkey tail as having the best evidence for support for breast cancer patients.
Another good resource is Medicinal Mushrooms, a Clinical Guide, by Martin Powell. I bought the download Kindle version on Amazon.

Fredntan~
So happy that folks here are talking mushrooms! Also, your mushroom hunting/growing sounds rad!! Sorry if any of these studies are duplicates. I have been taking Turkey Tail capsules (3-6g x day), AHCC(Maitake mycellium) capsules(3g x day), and chaga capsules and tea(with reishi) daily since diagnosis in february. My understanding is that the dried preparations are more effective for chronic conditions while the tinctures/extracts are better suited for more acute/short term dosing.
yep, these are big players in my supplement regimen!!
love this thread!
happy hunting!
