Good evening ladies
raindeer- I had my port put in a couple of weeks ago it did hurt for a couple of days but nothing you can handle after having your mast.
My arm pit is killing me the last couple of days has anyone else have this? Thinking it is my nerves coming back to life.
I am not sure when I will be able to go back to work. I am a bartender at a local bar and my onco is not thrilled by the idea because of the physical demands and dealing with the public while my imunne system is so wack. I don't sit still well so I am going stir crazy.
Pat- is claritin something to purchase this is the first I've heard of it. What does it help with?
My pet scan came back today clear yippie
I love that I found this site so very helpfull thanks to you all.

Hey everyone! After a bad night last night with hip pain, I am starting to feel human again. Infusion was May 2nd so that makes this day 4. I have a bit of a sore throat, and a few aches but tolerable. One annoying thing though is my taste buds are starting to check out. Does anyone know if this lasts the whole treatment cycle?
If you are part of my May 2nd group..How are you doing? The silence makes me worried ....I hope everyone is doing well ....BTW UKKate love your list, a woman after my own heart. I planned everything until this BC hit me! Now I am trying find the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.,,,,
Patty, good idea would love to see my MO do a round
The nurses at my center just drool when he walks by it sooooo funny....
Laura5, I am glad the cold caps worked for you. My center does not allow them!
Hang in there Okiecountry...the waiting is the worst. Once I made my decision to start chemo, I slept all night for the first time in many weeks. I was diagnosed in Mid Jan and just started chemo on the 2nd of May. Lost 12 pounds due to anxiety!
Good night everyone...I hope everyone sleeps well.
-
Echocardiogram done - I will start with AC chemo tomorrow afternoon!
Good luck to all of you!!!

I found a LOT of info regarding prepping for chemo at this link
http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/69/topic/785189
I have been preparing for this ever since I got the "good new" (said sarcastically) that I would be having chemo.
Claritin is used if you receive a nuelasta shot (it increases white blood cells and is given because the chemo will affect your white blood cells which you need to fight infections and avoid catching colds etc...). The Neulasta shot is given usually the day after chemo, assuming your doctor orders it...not all docotrs do! The Neulasta has the potential to cause bone pain...yes it is temporary and may last for a few days after each shot.
Some doctors recommend it, others say no and some are indifferent (like mine)
I recommend reading the lists for medications you might want to purchase over the counter and have on hand for the potential side effects of chemo. I do not know if each side effect listed occurs for ALL the different types of chemo drugs.
Please listen to your doctor and give yourself some time to heal. You don't want to have setbacks! -
It's been a tough weekend. Just when I thought things were getting better today happened. Tired and achy. I over estimated my ability to take care of my kids , luckily I had my FIL come over around 10. The heartburn is a killer but so far the nausea has been manageable. That neulasta injection really kicked me while I was down I am so happy that the clairitin seems to help. Don't want to come here and be a downer but I didn't want to disappear.
-
I'd like to join the May chemo group. Starting taxol/carboplatin May 9th in S.F. IDC, 6 mm, triple negative, no nodes, double mastectomy after chemo. Best of luck to everyone.
-
I too am joining this May group!! Start my chemo tomorrow..I'm a little nervous to say the least, but it is comforting to see so many of you before me being so strong and getting thru this relatively well. I have to drive an hour for treatment. My husband is coming with me tomorrow, not sure if he can do this everyy treatment and hoping to feel well enough to drive myself home.
Good luck to everyone and I'll be following up to see how everyone is doing.

Hi Michelle,
Hope you are feeling better. After Neulesta last Friday, I aslo feel some abdominal and bone pain. But it is tolerable so far. I am not on any pain medicine. I had bad constipation though, lol. Increased my water intake, and took the pills, now constipation is under control.
-
patty thank you for the link

To Gully,
I also started May 2nd. I have a sore throat too. Rinsing with salty water first thing in the moring seems to help with it. And drinking as much water as you can.
My pain is also manageable. Walked almost 3 miles today with my kids. But felt tired and did not want to do anything afterward.
Food tastes differently, but I managed to eat regular meals.
-
Welcome to Debwarrior and Worrywart93! We will all get through this....and its good to have folks walking the path with you. Our group keeps growing!
To Gully and everyone else that stated last week, sorry about the SE's but it sounds like things are getting better. Hang in there. I start Thursday with TCH and just want to get this dang rollercoaster going!
-
Hi - Welcome to all the "newbies"
I'm dressed and ready to go to work but still in a good amount of pain from the port. Plus, when I removed the bandages this morning, a little part started to bleed
I was So glad I still had some oxycodine from the MX - I took one of those last night and that helped me get some sleep.
Shelly - sorry they pushed back your start date
It's a blessing and a curse really isn't it?
I've heard that your taste buds change during chemo for the whole time. I hope that means that I don't want to eat!! I was trying on dresses on Sunday for the Bat Mitzvah and it was challenging enough to find things to cover my "one boob" but I had to account for my weight gain too
Oh, and on top of the MX pain, and the new pain from the Port, I got my period today too! Oh the joys!
I still have no answer about my STD but my pay check was way lower last month so work deducted for the time I was out recovering from the MX. That's why I feel compelled to go back today. As if having breast cancer doesn't suck enough, it stinks to have to worry about all your bills too....
Oh - BTW - having the port put in was pretty easy. I was a little nervous about it but even though I was kinda awake, they gave me enough medicine to where I really didn't care!
-
MariaNL - I think the armpit pain, and many other pains after mastectomy and reconstruction are indeed the nerves doing something. Sometimes I get painful stingers inside of my fake boobs too, and I wonder what that could be since I thought it was just expanders in there. I think the rule is if it persists then you should call the doctor. Sometimes I massage the pain, and or do some stretching (e.g. Walking the wall) and that helps.
Good luck at work today UKate (try not to over do it!). Welcome new sisters and I wish our early may starters a low side effect day. Keep drinking fluids! Hopefully you'll feel much better this week!
Amy -
Michelle I too suffer with the heartburn. It hit me almost as soon as the chemo hit my veins. Pepcid added to infusion and received script for protonix to take every day. It helps keep it at bay. Would probably be better if I could give up morning coffee.
Kate I remember my port pain got better day by day. Ice pack was my best friend. Good luck at work today. Let us know how it goes - I return on the 12th.
I am feeling fairly well. Biggest difficulty is finding motivation to get moving when I have nowhere to be and nothing urgent to be done. Am looking forward to working again! -
Hope all goes well for the ladies that start today. Don't forget claritin if getting neulasta tomorrow. It does help
-
IPC- Where do you live in Maryland? I grew up there and also went to UMAB in the late 80's. I live in Maine now, but it is really a similar environment....... I am quite bored too, as I am off work. I know what you mean about getting movtivated to get going. I am going to try my exercise class today..or course really modified..
Congrats to all who finished their first round today! Remember FIGHT LIKE A GIRL!!!!
-
Gully I live in sykesville Md which in Carroll County. Rainy day here so not even walk around the neighborhood today! Grocery store might be excitement for the day.
-
IPC..I grew up in Garrett County....the far western tip in Deep Creek lake, its sort of a resort town. Its sunny here today and I think I am going to do some errands as well....Have a good day!
-
Gully,
Here are some things I picked up from the boards regarding mouth care and mouth issues.
Pardon if my notes seem poor, I sometimes speed write and think I will remember later. Anyhow, most is understandable.
Biotene mouthwash/rinse. (Can find in CVS, Walmart...). Rinse after EVERY meal. Used to prevent and treat sore mouth. I accidentally purchased two bottles. I think I am going to put one on the kitchen counter and one in the bathroom.
Biotene toothpaste. It is for dry mouth
Sugar free gum (biotene makes one)
Mouth rinse: 1/4 tsp salt. And 1/4 tsp baking soda and - c. Warm water. Rinse. Make fresh each time.
Mouth rinse: 1 tsp Benadryl, 1 tsp maalox. Mix together rinse and spit
Rinse: Caphosol. 2 ampules mix, swish, spit. (I have no idea what this Product is)
****if you cannot get any of the above to work, or don't want to be bothered call your oncologist staff and they can write a prescription. No one should suffer!******
Change toothbrushes frequently (I don't think for mouth sores, I think for infection?)
Change from metal utensils to plastic utensils to get rid of metallic taste.

Anyone have muscle/skin pain? I have been taking Claritin and haven't had any bone pain but all of a sudden my skin is sore to the touch. It's day 6. Random side effect there. Other than that, I've just been exhausted and ridiculously hungry. And unfortunately, everything tastes awesome.
-
Yes to the muscle and skin pain. My head is red and sensitive and now I have a lovely acne type rash. Food is disgusting nothing tastes right. I may have dh grab me some taco bell bean burritos tonight.
-
First AC infusion done! So far so good.
They sent me home with neupogen shots for 7 days - insurance does not pay for neulasta. Is that normal? -
My first treatment tomorrow morning. Taxol, Cytoxan and adriamycin. Very nervous. I am active and hope that I can still get up and do things.
-
Guess I am leaving May chemo :-(
Meet with my Oncologist, she pushed out chemo till 1st week in June, after she reviewed the radiologist report from the Lung CatScan. She said she was going to go to the breast cancer board on the 23rd of this month. Her words were its a slim chance but it's a possibility. The nodulars (2 small 3mm) are too small to Biopsy. She will review my case with the board and then go from there.
Her words were no chemo no nothing if it's mets.
The 23rd seems forever away.
What the heck are the chances of this happening? 1.79cm er pr+ her2- nodes clear grade 3.
Dr's reply was 10-20%. I am an insurance agent I don't like those odds. -
Hi Rain;
I just wanted to let you know that my port has become my new best friend; I cannot even image going through chemo without Eleanor! She was uncomfortable the first few days but ice packs really helped. I honestly can't image doing chemo without a port (it probably doesn't help my veins are crap)! In the middle of a decadron sleepless night I realized she deserved a name so chose Eleanor for a quote I read by Eleanor Roosevelt that you should do something everyday that scares you! I haven't been able to do that up until February 20, 2013; that was the day they did the second mamo and ultra sound and knew something was probably wrong!!!! Since my lesion (love the term) was only 1/4" diameter it seemed like this should have been a piece of cake to treat but ended up grade 3 and triple negative so here I am. Anyway enough of my rambling my prognosis is still very positive and I feel everything is going to be great; this is just a blip on my radar!!!
Good luck with your treatment and enjoy your port!
Rose
-
Hi Rain,
Sorry about your news. Try to keep your chin up so they say! Waiting sucks!
Rose, love the quote " you should do something that scares your everyday!" We all have that covered don't we
Did my exercise classs yesterday....it felt so good to feel at little normal! Kicked my butt though.
Good luck today Algranna! Its not as bad as you are imagining...you will do great!
Jenna, I am hungry too, its the roids. But my taste buds are checking out! Ugh..... everything tastes bland. Going for my one week check today maybe the magic mouthwash could help with this.
Have a good day ladies...roll on!
-
Hang in with us Rain.....you're close enough to May. We always think the worst but most of the time it turns out alright. Flip those odds around to 80%-90% the nodules will be nothing. My scan showed a 5mm lung nodule and no one was concerned about it. Just a note from the radiologist to keep an eye on it in the future.
Sending postive energy your way!
-
Good morning
Not sure if chemo related but woke up with horrendous anxiety attack today. No doctors today so that isn't it. Feeling well otherwise. -
Ukkate,
Thanks for letting me know the port operation isn't too bad. I'm really nervous about that. I get the port put in tomorrow and start chemo same day and I'm using cold caps so will be a long day. My daughter had her bat mitzvah a year ago and it was such a beautiful day. It will be something to help carry you through this rough time. We need those good times and things to celebrate mixed in here. mazeltov! And best of luck to all the May chemo ladies, it's so nice to have this group to go through it with. This journey makes me realize how many amazing women are all around me in my real world and in the cyberworld willing to help. -
Deb - congrats on your daughters Bat Mitzvah last year. I can't beleive you have the port and chemo on the same day - that sucks
. I'm feeling much less sore today thank goodness.
I had to leave work early yesterday, I was just in too much pain. I hope to be here all day today. Tomorrow am I have my bi-weekly saline fill!!
Kate
