Curious and wondering how soon any of you who had a BMX (with no reconstruction) were able to return to swimming and workouts (and hot tub soak!) at your health club/gym ("like before") - after you had your JP drains removed, post-BMX? Thank you!

Ask your surgeon.  Usually you'll be on at least 6 weeks exercise restrictions, and it may be longer depending on your surgeon.

And since you've had a node removed, you are at an increased risk for lymphedema.  You need to start slowly and work up gradually.  I know we're all impatient to get back to our old selves, but pushing too hard too fast can cause permanent long-term issues.  But if you're smart and respect the trauma your body has been through, and work back slowly, there's no reason you can't eventually get back to your old exercise routine.

Here are some guidelines on exercising after node removal:  http://stepup-speakout.org/Handout%20doc%20for%20SUSO-040113.pdf

    Good luck!

Thank you, NatsFan! I will be seeing my BS in 2 days, and will be sure to go over the 'exercise equation' and amusement park ride questions with him. (DH & I brought season pass to nearby amusement park last fall, long before my BC DX, but am determined to go slow & steady - after going through what I have, and coming this far (fingers crossed). Thanks for your helpful link, too! :)

turquoise-After my BMX, no recon, with lymph nodes(4 on on side & 5 on the other)removed, I was told not to drive for one week. I had my drains removed 6 days following surgery & went hiking the next day. My BS didn't give me any further restrictions. She did not refer me to physical therapy. She told me that studies have shown it didn't make a difference. I know this statement will anger some. I tried swimming 3 weeks post-op & I made 1 lap on that attempt. My 2nd attempt I was able to swim 10 or 15(don't quite remember). My left arm was more sluggish than the right, but swimming helped me get it moving. Swimwear can feel really funny/scratchy & that seems to be what has limited me the most with my swimming. Finding a suit that's comfortable is a chore.

I went back to the gym & started running as soon as my drains came out. At 1st I was careful to isolate certain muscles. I was on my own. I did OK. You might want to ask to see a physical therapist for guidance.
