Spring 2013 Rads

Hi y'all!
Lisa - Congrats proud warrior! So happy for you:)
RunFree - Final 2 yippee! Did you place a preferred driver request? Just wondered who has the privilege of Driving Ms RunFree:)....yippee
I had my Wednesday chair massage today at the BC and I wept when I left ...my massage had been the 30 min before rads...today I turned right and walked with a grateful heart out the door:)
Patti - welcome to rads...you will find great info and wonderful support here! If you are nervous write down your concerns and ask your RO until you feel confident on your treatment. Just ask questions...your rad team wants your treatment to go well ...and they want you to be comfortable with the process.
Fear of the unknown is to be expected (remember how you felt prior to surgery)and I think we all can related to our raw feelings the first day on the rad table...it is serious laser tag...you will find the strength and you will be fine brave warrior:)
(((Hugs)))
Cindy -
Hi Patti...
Thinking of you and sending comfort as you start this journey.
Everyone's experience is different. Eat well, get proper sleep, hydrate, moisturize...and keep your sense of humor (That's Cindy's (RMlulu) favorite!).
Most of all...hang in there, you'll make it!!
You're not going at it alone...we are here for you!!! xo Lisa
-
RMLulu - CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! You are one great warrior and you are all done! Yeah!! In a couple more weeks you will be ready to move on to something else other than cancer treatments. I am now 9 days post last radiation, and I would have to say that the redness did get worse for about 1 week - fortunately, no blisters or broken skin - but definitely bright red like a very bad sunburn. Now it is almost better but I continue with the moisturizers and drink lots of water etc.
I had an awesome visit to San Fran - great weather, great food and it was wonderful to simply "forget" about cancer for a few days. I did a lot of walking and really did feel well enough to do the hills.
To all of you still in treatment - hang in - it goes by fast, and as Cindy would say - drink lots of water, keep your sense of humour!! Who knows you may not even get any side effects - not everyone does.
-
Cindy, thanks for asking about my drivers! I needed to go to my backup list for today and I asked my coordinator (who's my friend/boss/office neighbor) to write to a few people. I put a top choice first, and that's who I got. This afternoon my mom came and she'll take me to my last day. This is wonderful, because she lives a couple of hours away and we don't see each other much, and she's been having a lot of health problems herself this spring, but she's doing much better now. So we're both celebrating! My skin is noticeably redder today, but still not that bad.
Patti, plenty of people are nervous, and some people have bad experiences, but radiation has been quite manageable for me. I haven't had significant trouble with my skin or fatigue, and I've had no swelling. I hope you'll find the same.
-
Good morning all! Just checking in one week post rads - 30 treatments total. My tumor area, which received 7 boosts, is fiery red, peeling, raw in places, and itchy. It's all very manageable though and I've been able to continue with my exercising as I did throughout rads. 😀 That was always one of my main concerns. Overall, not a bad experience for me. The best part of the rads experience were my techs. Loved them! I think the itching was/is the worst part.
To everyone still playing laser tag, you can do it!!! Keep hydrated, rest when your body tells you to (if you can), and eat well.
Healing hugs to everyone! Happy weekend!
Amy -
Yippee ! RunFree ! Yippee:)))
Happy Dancing with you and your mom...you did it...DONE) Ooo Whoo!!!
Congrats brave warrior! Ya done good...jump twist & shout no more zappin:)
Next week it will hit you...at your rad time...tears of joy that this part of the cure is really over...and your heart will be so grateful:) ...oh the blessings along the way.
Sending calming confident & baby smooth skin your way (((hugs)))

Hi all,
I finished rads yesterday, yesssss!! 61.6 shades of Gray done and gone!! (28 1.8 Gy sessions with 28 boosts built in, 0.4 Gy each time.) The docs said I came through with flying colors and that the itching would get better now that I can stop using powder. Whaaa?? Actually, I haven't had all that much itching, maybe because I haven't used all that much powder, haha! Now, instead of powder, they said I should use "quark", similar to sour cream. "Uh, I have yogurt, would that be good?" (Didn't actually say that, but it almost popped out
The RO was aghast to see that I've been using a "chill pack" and wrote it in my chart. Sorry, but those homemade gel packs helped me more than anything---more than hydrocortisone, more than emu oil, more than benadryl cream, more than aloe vera or Aveeno moisturizer and waaaay more than freaking powder!
I never had any choice as to which RO would see me and did not like "Frau Dr. Quark" at all. Some of the others were better, but they are all too focused on their convenience and medical tradition at the cost of the patient's comfort or interests. It was very strange to be sneaking my own treatments behind their backs, but my research showed that there are thousands (or at least hundreds) of opinions about radiation skin care and maybe it doesn't matter at all what we use. We either burn or we don't... I happen to believe that moisturizing helps to replace the water-lipid barrier which is partially destroyed during radiation and that hydrocortisone can reduce some inflammation and that aloe vera and emu oil are very soothing.
Uh oh, rant developing...
Anyway---this week I had fatigue off and on for the first time and--weirdweirdweird--aches-and-pains all over, especially in that largest muscle group "down under". Then it's gone the next day, so tomorrow should be a good day.
Nothin' but good days from now on!!
Prayers and best wishes for continued healing to everyone!
-
Hi y'all
Congrats Cynthia! Happy Dancing:)). Ooo whoo! Yeah nothing but good days ahead:))
This is a good week...so many are shouting DONE! Yippee! Way to go zip zap!
Now time for healing ... calm soft new skin ... relief and thanks ... Yes been there done that no more rads:)
TGIF! I'm so happy! But must say I miss my great rad team....maybe not that much but they are great.
For those starting or counting down breathe...focus...you're zappin will end and you will be doing the laser tag dance soon:))
(((Hugs)))
Cindy -
You did it, RunFree!!!!! Congrats...so happy for you!!
Cynthie...You made it!!! Happy Healing!!
Wishing all you making your way through a restful and comfortable weekend...you're almost there...xo Lisa

Hi all....
Just wanted to join in ......for those that may be scared of rads (i was terrified) butttttt
Done 18 out of 30 rads today and no side effects at all... .
I am pasty white ( irish heritage ) never tan , always burn in the sun , freckled ...etc
Just using corn starch as per my RO 's recommendations . Also taking tumeric supplements .
Hope things continue this way for me and i wish everyone on this thread the same .
-
Thanks everyone! I am indeed ALL DONE!!! I got a certificate and a kazoo/party blower musicale from the staff, and the RO said she didn't need to see me for 3 whole months. My skin is getting redder, maybe heading toward what AmyinMI describes--Yikes! Sorry Amy, wow! I'm pretty itchy too, off and on. But the end is in sight, and anyway I'll have a spare 2 1/2 hours every day to do nothing but pamper my skin. Today after rads my mom and I shopped and went out to lunch and shopped and went to Starbuck's. I found two very cute and completely impractical summer dresses on clearance, now mine. When we got home, there was a huge bouquet of white roses from my mom, husband, brother, and two sisters, and another bouquet from a survivor friend who was a great cheerleader through rads. It made me cry, and I think I will probably be emotional for a little while, but still it was just a lovely day. I finally realized that although I'm concerned about side effects of Tamoxifen and maybe ovarian suppression, the fact is that I am no longer in treatment for cancer! We are declaring victory against the enemy as of today! What comes next is all preventive. Of course I don't know the future, no one does, but I'm going to enjoy this big moment and feel the feelings. Congrats to you too, Cynthie, and way to go on the self-directed care. LOL on the "61.6 shades of gray" line! Sorry your RO was a jerk. I loved mine, but I had a bad MO and will have to start from scratch going forward. Oh well.
Thanks to everyone here for all the support! This is a wonderful community. Good luck to all those still in rads or cooling on the sideboard like me. Onward!
-
Haha, RunFree! "Cooling on the sideboard"! We're a bunch of pies just out of the oven---let's see, I'm the strawberry rhubarb!
-
runfree16

Runfree and Cynthie,
Congratulations on finishing rads! I'm a bit late in doing the happy dance with you, but I'm sure you're still dancing! :-) So very happy for you!
Hugs for healthy and fast healing!
Amy -
I didn't have any burns until the last week of the treatment, but once it started... Oh, it was no fun! And It continues to worsen for a week after you finish. Nothing helped except SUDOCREM. It really works! I just logged in to put it out here, so everybody can benefit from it. You can get it on amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Sudocrem-Antiseptic-Healing-Cream-250G/dp/B001E4GPVE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1367687744&sr=8-2&keywords=sudocrem
You will see a BIG difference in no time!
Wish you all the best. -
The skin does indeed continue to get redder after treatments end. So be prepared for it. Continue to moisturize the skin and use cooling creams to keep the skin comfortable.
Happy for all of you who have finished - isn't it a wonderful feeling?
-
Thanks Katkat! It looks like I can get that over here in Germany too! Lots of us have just finished but are still suffering the after effects---I do think this will help more than sour cream (as advised by my RO LOL)!
-
Yes, Cynthie, you can get it in stores anywhere in Europe, but in US - only online. You guys are lucky there! I don't know about sour cream, but plain yogurt does help to cool the burnt skin down and prevent too much peeling. I was covered in yogurt until I got SUDOCREM. And once I got it, my skin went from bordeaux to almost normal skin color in just a few days! This is all thanks to my cousin from Europe. She uses it for her baby's diaper rash! Who could've thought!
-
Thanks for the congrats and the product recommendation. Cynthie, as a pie, I'd want to be cherry, blueberry, or lemon meringue. Pretty itchy today but not more than I can handle. Definitely redder in the boost area than it was a couple of days ago. I think it will really feel great on Monday when I don't have to dash away to rads. I'm having fun thinking about what I'll do with those 2-3 hours every morning. Braids3/Chris, do you mean you've been on Tamoxifen for a year? I love to hear stories about it not bothering people too much. (Of course, if it doesn't sit well with me, I'll want company!)
-
I actually tried the yogurt a few days ago and it WAS cooling, but felt too acidic for the stage of redness I'm at now. Think we'll walk over to the Sunday Apotheke and buy me some Sudocrem!! (Pharmacies shut on Sunday except for designated stores which take turns being open for emergencies.)
-
Hi y'all
Enjoying 48 hrs with a full house:). Fun, but worn out and can hardly wait for free boobing time with lots of my girls or emu oil... Funny how we all have our creams!
Pie...hummmm...my skin looks good was a bit crisp like pecan then new skin emerged so maybe a coconut cream...with toasted shave coconut on top...with some strawberries for the new skin pink.
Ready for nap, lube job, and air time...and the quite
TGIM - yippee 1 week out of rads tomorrow and my tamoxifen is sitting on bathroom counter. Will start 4 wks after rads...operation preventative maintenance thinking 2 1/2 tam then 2 1/2 AI based on study posted here...first things first...new girl skin
Sending calm healing thoughts in the rad light:)
(((Hugs)))

Hi Everybody! I am new to the Discussion Boards. First – I would like to thank all of you for sharing your journey. I have learned a lot from reading on here. I am at 13 of 33 rads. The 33 rads do include 8 boosts. I am doing good overall. No skin issues yet. I am nervous for treatment over the next few weeks. It will start including 2 boost a week. I have had 1 boost so far. And I had no energy left after that one. I hope the rest goes better than the 1st.
-
Welcome, ptoon2! That's an interesting rads schedule, haven't heard of it being done that way before. I finished two days ago and I'm doing well. I have to say, I had more aching and zingers (quick sharp pains) in my breast in weeks 2 and 3 than I ever did after. Supposedly rads side effects are cumulative, but that may not be true for everyone. So what I'm saying is, maybe the fatigue you had after the first boost won't turn out to be typical.
-
Good information from everyone. I have completed 14 of 28 rads. Just got hit with fatigue today. Was feeling so good after completing 5 months of chemo. I do have a 2 hour round trip drive so that doesn't help. Oh well. Have been getting lymphodema physical therapy as a precaution. Very beneficial as radiation can trigger it. Not sure if anyone else has done this? Weekends almost over so back to laser tag routine tomorrow!
-
Mainegirl, I've gotten some PT to prevent lymphedema too, especially since my micromet mandated axillary rads for me. Now that I'm done with rads, I'm going to get my PT referral moved to my town since I also had a long round trip to rads. So it sounds as though you are within 3 weeks of completing a journey you've been on since last August? Or will you still have more Herceptin?
-
RunFree16, glad you're getting PT too. It's good to know how to manage lymphodema if it flares up. I will continue with weekly Herceptin until rads is done, then every 3 weeks through end of year. Not too bad and I have no side effects from this drug.
-
Done 19 of 30 ( includes 5 boosts ) rads today ..no issues what so ever...still just using corn starch as per RO'S recommendations. I work out every morning as well and work up a good sweat.
Met a girl who finishes her 25 rads tomorrow ( no boost )and she has zero issues ...she used only corn starch as well !!!
Go figure !!
-
Hello Monday & Welcome!
Ptoon - congrats on 13/33! Is your protocol where you do the first 2 weeks no boosts and then 2 boosts each wk during the remaining 4 weeks? My protocol was 33 rads- 28 full with 5 boosts at the end. My skin is doing very well 1 wk post rads...use emu oil and hydrocortisone ...my area was at 12:30 near chest wall...don't know if location of focus makes a difference in skin tolerance...ie area I usually let tan. Hope you had a good rest over the weekend and by Friday you will have more days behind you then ahead which is a great feeling)
Pooh612 - 20/30 today...you are almost done yippe! Exercise really helps...body and mind...cornstarch and a blush brush still my main stay...keep it simple:))
Mainegirl - yippee you've past the halfway point! Hope you have appointment buddies like RunFree did for her drive...yeah on LE PT ...I asked but RO said no problems. You've come a long ways on this journey ...hang in there summer is coming and soon it will just be preventative maintenance and our new normal but we get to drive)
RunFree - where are you gonna wear the new summer dresses? Out for Mother's Day? Or grocery store or in&out burgers ha:))
Adagio - it is wonderful to be on this side of treatment! Glad SF with hubby was fun!
Doing the weekend cleanup and laundry! Surprises all around...2yr gs magical surprises...found his cars in the wine cooler...best medicine is his giggles:))
Zip zap laser taggers...just icing with My Girls:)
(((Hugs)))
Cind -
Hi all,
I haven't heard about corn starch?? Can someone provide more details.... what's it help with, how do you apply it, and how often???
I'll have 25 and 5 more boosts, so far I'm done with 16..... my boob is pink and the top part is much darker pink with a rash which also goes between the boobs (where my surgery was)....
I'm not really itching (KNOCK ON WOOD), but the rash isn't real pretty....
