What Tests Did You Have After Finding Your Lump?

I saw my doctor about a lump on my breast yesterday and he said it was "concering and warrants an ultrasound". He asked the nurse to book it at the hospital as opposed to their in-house ultrasound clinic which worried me even more. I asked if I would need a mammogram as well and he said not yet. Well, I just called the hospital to see if they had an appointment for me yet for the ultrasound and the person who answered recognized my name from the requisition and said that I am being booked for ultrasound and mammogram. Now my nerves are through the roof! Is this standard protocol for any palpable lump in Ontario?

I got both done two days after I found my lump. As a result of them, I was told I should have a biopsy. I asked to have it done immediately, rather than leave and come back after another day of worrying. I am glad I did as I got my results back sooner and was able to know exactly what I had and go into active treament quickly.

Try not to worry. Some lumps turn out to be nothing to fret over. I hope your's will be one of them.

Thanks for the replies. They called me back to let me know that they are just waiting to speak to the radiologist before they book my appt and will call back as soon as they speak to him. I thought it was techs that perform the ultrasound and mammograms and the radiologist reads them. My mind is definitely running wild now! It's been on overdrive since my mom's recent stage 4 diagnosis threw us all for a loop.

Update: They have got me in for a mammogram first and then an ultrasound this Thursday morning thanks to a cancellation. I need a drink!

Good luck!  I'm in Quebec but was scheduled for an ultrasound at the hospital first as I am so young.  When the technician saw the results, she got the radiologist, who then sent me immediately for a mammogram and then biopsy.

I remember almost falling through the floor when they were talking to each other in the ultrasound room as I was expecting them to take one look at it and say it was a cyst.

I've noticed that the pushier you are in the public system, the better it is.  You can usually get things done faster if you ask or act like you are a high anxiety patient.  I know this is a bit dishonest but there have been studies that show pushier patients are more likely to survive.  So, if they need to do a biopsy (which they probably will) ask for it immediately.  It will save you so many bad days.
