hysterectomy vs oophorectomy

I recently finished treatment for BC. I am BRCA 2 positive. So now have to get my ovaries removed.

My oncologist suggests getting my ovaries and fallopian tubes removed and leave the uterus in. But my Gyn suggests a hysterectomy as well. she says removing the tubes and ovaries does not remove all the tissues of the tubes since the tubes are attached to the uterus. She insists on complete hysterectomy with ovaries and fallopian tube removal.

I am confused. My surgery is on Wednesday.

Can BRCA2 +ve please reply what kind of surgery did you go for? Thanks.

I know this reply will be late, but I am BRCA1+, and I chose to have the total hysterectomy. I could see no reason to leave an organ in my body like the uterus, that could develop cancer. My gynecological oncologist as well as my breast surgeon recommended "the works" also!! Hope you are doing well.

Hi ttkslee, thanks for posting. I had my surgery last month, only got the tubes and ovaries out.

It was a hard decision to make, I just went ahead with what my MO suggested. Hopefully will have no issues in the uterus.

    Natalie,

I was just wondering how long your recovery time was for your oopho?

    Anniedreat,

Normally this surgery is these days done laproscopically so recovery time is much faster. I however had to undergo with incision made like they do for C-section. Even then I think I was doing pretty ok in about 2 weeks.

There was a dull ache below my belly button that lasted a long time. But with gentle massage to reduce scar tissue formation it subsided.
