I just found this thread and would love to be included in the May 4th lunch or other date. I would love to meet some fellow survivors in this area. I am in NOVA but elected to be treated at Georgetown. My MO is Robert Warren, and he doesn't do scans or tumor markers either. I think most of them follow that protocol. A lot of the women who say they get them are out of the country, I've found. My surgeon was Elizabeth Feldman, who is now in Reston. My RO was Stella Hetelekidis at INOVA Fairfax. I highly recommend all of them. I have not had plastic surgery yet. I have consulted with Dr. Nahabedian about it.

Fredntan - no tumor markers unless there is a concern?

    Fredntan,

On the subject of diet, this week I met with the nutritionist at the hospital where Im getting radiation. We talked about nutrition to reduce chance of recurrence. In case you are interested, she said weight/BMI is very important, as well as (related to) keeping blood sugar fairly low and stable...eat "low glycemic" foods. Whole grains, vegetables, lean protein. Insulin helps cancer grow. Good diet/weight helps keep insulin levels low.

Cancer is also a disease of inflammation. Eating too much food at a time, eating high-fat food and consuming alcohol cause inflammation. I have quit alcohol and lost ten pounds; 20 pounds to go.

I've pretty much done all that. turned vegan for most part. do have fish at times. its rare to have ddrink now. I go to the block center in chicago and see dr block. he does tumor markers and a whole slew of lab work. but he's far and out of network. but having 40% chance of this thing coming back. I'm doing everything I can

Thriceblessed, thanks for your recommendations, I will check them out.

Fredntan, my oncologist does tumor marker during my first appt with her, but for ovarian -- CA125. I do not have ovarian cancer that I know of, I have not seen her for the follow up yet so not sure if she's going to continue doing it or was that test just a 1 time.

Guineamom--what is the name of your onc? I would like to get tumor markers for ovarian cancer done at least once as I had ILC. I think because I was BRCA negative I can't get anyone very concerned about ovarian cancer or whether I should have an ooph. I am seeing a new gyn next month for whom I've waited about six months so maybe there'll be some help there. I also think more attention should be paid to uterine cancer screening in my case as well.

Amy Irwin from Virginia Cancer Specialist. Not sure if I'll continue going to her because I have mixed feelings of her. She can be really nice at one time and give comments that rubbed me the wrong way at another.

Hi ladies! I am 44 and from NVa...PWC near Quantico. Was diagnosed in January. Had BMX (SNS) on 2/13/13. Though I was stage 1b grade 2, I decided on BMX due to high risks: period at 10.5, dense breasts (cancer only picked up on MRI), past biopsies (first at 23 showing 3cm ADH), and strong family history of young BC (mom 28 , maternal Gma mid 40s [passed at 53]...even 2 of grandmother's 3 sisters had it in 50s and 60s). I just didn't trust stuff being missed, and had so many scars from excisional biopsies, I was done :)

So, here I am. Started Tamoxifen 5 weeks ago. Had my last fill on Friday and am hoping for my exchange in July.

I would love to meet on the 4th, but committed to doing a community yard sale (trying to get rid of vintage and painted furniture if anyone is interested lol). Maybe the next time around.

Hope that this first NoVa meeting will be one of many, and that we all pitch in to keep it going. Thanks again, Odie, for making this first meeting happen!

I see Dr Rebecca Kaltman at George Washington university hospital. She does tumor markers and liver readings for me because my tumor markers are very reliable. Currently I am scanned every 6 months. Dr Kaltman ran scans before starting chemo. If she had not done that, I'd be dead. She is very precise and I love her.

I live in Gainesville, about 30 minutes West of Fairfax. Very near Gainesville in Haymarket are home furnishing and upscale clothes consignment shops--2 small buildings, one for home and the other for clothes. Collectively they are called The Very Thing.

You might want to Google and then mapquest it to see if they could be a part of your trip home. I have anniversary plans with my husband after the lunch or I'd go with you. I love these shops.

    Hi Ladies,

I ony found this thread a couple of days ago.  I am from the NoVa area as well and would love to join all of you.  I will try to make it on Saturday but am not sure yet if I'll be able to.  Do you think you'll have another get-together not too long after this one?

    Amelie
