Hi All, today was my first day of rads. I have 28 plus 5 boosts. I don't know how many grays, but I will ask tomorrow. what is considered "normal"? Is there such a thing??
I have been sobusy learning about chemo, I hardly researched the radiation. I didn't do chemo due to low oncotype -16, but now have a steep learning curve on the rads. Other questions I should ask? Oh,is Toms deodorant with the zinc riciloneate ingredient ok?
Good luck to all thenewbies and our sisters who are in the more intense phase. -
Hi Spring warriors!
@magnolia57, I've been using Tom's deoderant throughout my radiation treatment w/o issues (I had to read the ingr. list on my stick and it does have zinc ricinoleate, I love the refreshing lemongrass :-)
I finished 20/20 dose last Friday and almost a week later my skin is still red, hot, tender, spotted, nipples sore and peeling, and skin under boob and side feeling very raw to touch. It seemed to get worse after treatment which my RO said don't freak out if that happens, it is not uncommon. I have my followup with her in another week and hope it is better by then, she said it should be.
I thought I would avoid the rad fatigue but nope, it hit me the last 3 days of treatment and still a little now. For me, it is just like some are saying, "hitting a wall" -- I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine, and then BAM! I can't keep my eyes open and head up. But a good 1-3 hour nap and I'm okay again.
Overall, I'm definitely hanging in there, grateful that the treatment is behind me and feeling so much empathy for those of you still in the midst or just getting started. Wierd that I sort of miss going to my clinic and seeing my technicians Arlene and Jenny every day! I wrote "So Long and Thanks for all the Fishes" on my belly for them my last day, and left the staff a basket of 100-cal snack packs as a goodbye present. I got a certificate and rang the bell (4 good & loud rings for each of my weeks there).
-
I'm 2 weeks out from 20/20 and it definitey is getting better now although I still get tired pretty easily. But, I'm not sure if it is still from rads or a SE from letrozole--or maybe I'm just getting old
. I did occasionally 'hit the wall' for quite a while after my previous rads. Good luck!
-
Welcome megroy and magnolia!
Today I completed 8/10! 80% D-O-N-E! Wahooo! Tomorrow, I will bang the gong (ring the bell) and leave that place hopefully cancer free for life (which is the point, yes?) and only visit to give my girls a hug and bring them chocolate!
Ladies, it has been a wild ride and a wild week for me. I am tired but hanging tough and have worked all week in between treatments, even having to THINK! LOL...
So, it will all be over tomorrow and I for one feel guilty that so many of you have to go 33 times when I had 10 trmts in 5 days. This clinical trial was a God send and since I qualified for it with all the criteria met, I went for it. We shall see if I regret it as my REAL SE's are supposed to come within the next two-four weeks the RO told me. Also, I am already having the exhaustion so we shall see what skin issues the next few weeks bring me. Apparently we keep "Frying" from the inside out after we finish radiation for a little while. In my case, maybe even longer.
So, I am almost done "speed zapping" as Cindy called it (still get a chuckle out of that and SPF9 Cindy) and I for one am a happy girl. Dusting off my dancing shoes (or my comfortable slip on mules since I am so tired..HA!)
Hugs to all of you my sisters. We are doing what needs to be done to be HEALTHY forever! May we all be just that. xoxox
-
april - wow - that was fast!!! One more day to go and then as you say - see what happens!! Congratulations. Perhaps "speed-zapping" will become the wave of the future treatment protocol.
My breast has definitely become more itchy since finishing treatments - but not more red yet - so keeping my fingers crossed.
-
April, I'll be dancing with you! I have my last boost tomorrow. It's hard to believe that six weeks have passed already. 23 full breast and 7 boosts total. My breast is itchy and red; is peeling under the breast, cleavage area, on the incision, and on the nipple; is tender to touch; and I've noticed it looking more black and blue under my arm pit, almost like a bruise. I've also noticed the jabbing sensation on occasion. I've had a few bouts with fatigue but it hasnt been too bad. Overall, I can't complain. I'm small chested and have been able to keep up with my treadmill workout (at home) with no problems. I've just worn my sports bra over a tank top so it wouldn't rub on the skin. Worked great for me!
Hugs to all! I hope everyone has a good evening!

Checking in to say Hello to everyone going through rads. I finally finished two days ago. It was hell.
I am glad it's over. I had some gnarly side effects. The first being the esophagus ulcer that was discovered when I couldn;t swallow. Next up, the burn got so bad the skin split, cracked and peeled under my breast. That was bad enough and then to top it off, I got shingles on top of the burn on my breast and all the way around my back. I ended up in ER on night for flucking hours to get the anti viral meds. They gave me narcotics too. The shingles is as bad as they say. So much pain on top of pain. So once the oozing open sores of the burn and shingles dried up, after staying in the house for days because I couldn't stand to have anything touching it and didn't like skin peeling and sticking off my body, I went back to finish the rads. Yay me! The shingle pain is still lingering. It flucking hurts like a mofo.
Why did no one advise me to get a shingle shot when all this started? Damn it.
Anyone diagnosed with a cancer. GET A SHINGLES SHOT BEFORE YOU START TREATMENT!!!! and a flu and a pneumonia vaccine. Why do they not give these out before we start. Pisses me off. It would save so many so much trouble.
-
Hi everyone! Thanks for the advice and reassurance, April, RMlulu, and Riverflows! I have been using some lubriderm twice a day, but I suspect I should step it up . Good to know about the safety of Toms deodorant. My co-workers will appreciate it. Im getting 1.8 grays each session, I guess thats pretty standard. Hearing the variation of everyone's SEs will serve to keep me attuned to signs . I'm sorry to read about your shingles Queen Kong. I had a shingles flare -up years ago, and i can't imagine having it on top of the rads. You are obviously a strong soul.
Have a great Friday everyone, another treatment session and then two days off- yeah! -
QueenKong- I am so sorry shingles on top of a bad reaction to rads, thankful for the narcotics! I had a bad reaction and was given narcotics I cant imagine having shingles at the same time and then finishing.. hats off to you, I have a friend that has had them twice she was in agony. I had no idea there even was a shingles shot. I hope you dont continue to cook for too long. My RO said 7-10 days and I just got worse as the days passed but then also healed as soon as the heating stopped. Hope the same for you, I remember a few weeks ago you were really getting miserable, hate to say it but I was at the same time and in someway it helped to know I wasnt alone. Take it easy on yourself and do things for you and rest if you need to. Sending healing thoughts to you, you have been though too much already.
Amy, congrats on only 1 more time!! You have done so well, me and my tamoxifen are waiting for you so take your time!! please!!
Riverflows- I have not worn deodorant since my SNB in January and havent needed to. Summer is coming so that may change. There was no way and still isnt I could apply anything as I had open wounds from rads. Good thing is I have baby soft skin coming in and no hair! I understand it wont be returning so I guess theres our silver lining. Anyone have the hair return?
Cindy- its almost over, early congrats, thanks for always being there with your humor and shoulder!
-
queenkong - that sucks getting shingles on top of radiation burns. You poor thing - what a horrible thing to have happen. I am sending healing thoughts your way and hope for freedom from pain and itch.
lemon - so glad that you are finally healing - it has been such a tough journey for you also. I agree with you that we are all changed women now - our bodies and our minds. My outlook on life is so different now - life is to be embraced - there are no guarantees. Enjoy each day to the best of our ability - of course - some days it will be easier to do that than others.
-
Wow can't imagine shingles on top of everything else. That has got be horrible. Makes me want to go get a shingles vaccination. I am 24/30. My clinic is closed for 4 days so I get a little break then one more regular Tx then my boosts. I am red, blistered and itchy. I can handle the pain it is the itching that is driving me crazy. Emu oil seems to be working best for me for moisturizing but not much for the itching. I can't work out because sweating burns so bad! I tried covering the area with cornstarch before class but that didn't help. You know some of the side effects I didn't expect like making my reflux worse. I was getting worried until I found out that is common. My blood pressure has been running a little high too. I am hoping it goes down on its own after treatment. I have been taking my tamoxifin for 2 months now. My only side effects from it are leg cramps that I am taking magnesium for and the first month I had what I called brain fog. It seems to have gotten better the last few weeks. I am so ready to be done with this and to get my life back!
-
I AM FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😃 Deep breath in. Deep breath out. Freeboobing right now before getting dressed for a celebratory lunch with a friend. I think I will have a glass of wine with lunch. 😊
Queen kong, I am so sorry to hear about the shingles. I hope you recover quickly from them. You have been through so much already and to have that added to your plate is unfair. 😞 I know that as soon as I turn 50, I'm getting the vaccine.
Kim, I'm so glad you're feeling better! I'm looking forward to starting tami with you in a few weeks. We will continue to fight this together!
Momtotenkids, you're almost there! Congrats! We will be happy dancing with you at the end rads.
Magnolia, I'm using Tom's aluminum free (apricot) and love it. Unfortunately, my hair didn't stop growing and I think that's because I didn't receive direct radiation under my arm pit. So, I've been shaving and apologizing to my rad techs. 😁
April, congrats to you! You should be finishing today too! I'm happy dancing for you!
Cindy, you're almost there! We'll be putting our dancing shoes on on Monday. Right?!
And to all my sisters, hugs, healing hugs, calming hugs, cheering hugs! Have a great weekend!
xoxoxoxo

Hi y'all
QueenKong - Shingles ugh:(. I concur get your shingles shot! My hubby has been suffering for over 7 months with shingles would not wish anyone to ever go through this hell! Demand the shot when your PCP thinks your body can handle it. Note they don't like to give it to you if you are under 60yrs, but it's a must! The rash, the blisters, the pain, the burning...no we have enough going on protect yourself. Sending healing pain free days your way!
Momtotenkids - your are nearing the home stretch and final countdown:))) yippee! Ask your RO for rx for 2.5% hydrocortisone for the red itchy skin. I blend mine with emu oil and it helps so much. I found the cornstarch was to gritty and irritated my skinbut the emu oil seems to mask the body odor so:). I have the opposite problem my bp has been very low...93/61 & 87/52 took a multi vit and hydrated some more...today was 101/64... I'm usually low but not the extreme low....must be why fatigue has set in...but I eat...even when not hungry...have a check off list carbs, protein, fruit, vegs, fat, water ...DH was on TPN infusions for over a month with his c I don't want to go there so eat...better days are coming very soon:)
Lemon - glad you are beginning to feel better and skin is healing:) you are my hero! I'm down to the last days and fine that I cry in the shower ... a release...a relief...so thankful...booked our tickets to return home yesterday and I think I'm finding it so so overwhelming that it is almost finished! I know that my girl will cook for 1-2 wks, but RO said I could escape:).
This has been such a body, mind, and spirit journey...
Adagio - yes, life is to be embraced and enjoyed to the fullest!
Amy - yippee Happy Dancing)) congrats brave warrior! You did it!
Drumroll today is #2 2 good to be true! Monday is #1 it will be done. Saved my girl!
Clicking my heels there's no place like home no place like home!
Happy Friday and yeah the weekend is here! R&R time...hydrate, lube, free boobing time:)
(((Hugs)))
Cindy -
Congrats to those who are finishing, yay! QueenKong-so sorry you are having such a hard time and shingles too
Yuck! But have faith that it will get better. Lemon68 I had rads on my left side two+ years ago and am now starting to get a small amount of hair growing back--not sure if it will all come back or not. Right side is bare.
-
momtotenkids~~Do they take your blood pressure as soon as you sit down? I've been asking them to wait 2 or 3 minutes after I sit down. My BP drops a good bit if they wait. If they take mine immediately it like 160/95. If the wait a couple minutes, its 104/70.
Paula -
I never got my blood pressure checked at any time during radiation? Is this usual protocol in the US?
-
I only had my BP checked when I lost three pounds in one week. My nurse advised that they check it if you lose more than two pounds in a week.
-
Queenkong - That's tough stuff to go through. Hang in there, lady. We're pulling for ya.
Lemon - So glad to hear you're skin is doing better.
High fives, awkward hugs, and healing vibes to everyone else, wherever you may be in your in this journey. (hate that word, 'journey', but can't think of anything else that's better)
-
Adagio,
They check my blood pressure and temp once a week. -
I haven't had my BP or temp checked in...several weeks, can't remember. Hmmm. QueenKong, I had a mild case of shingles in December and it was NO FUN. I can't imagine stacking up shingles on top of a bad rads reaction! OUCH!!!! I hope your skin bounces back fast. When I had shingles, they said I should come back and get the vaccine next fall, after I turn 50. I will definitely do it. I have not heard of 60 as the cut-off. Seems really late.
Amy, big congrats on finishing, and April too! I've done 25/30, have done 2/7 boosts now, so I'll be the one dancing next Friday!
-
Amy- Big ((HUG)) here for you too! I know you were smiling from ear to ear I saw the pic!! So, beautiful!! Let me know when you have that script in hand and we shall down them togethor!
Cindy- tick tick tick, almost time to click those ruby red shoes, 1 more time!! I know you are so anxious to get home. Glad you have the weekend to get some rest.
Sneakychiquita- Did you start rads yesterday? I hope if so, so far so good.
Adagio- I never had my BP checked during rads, only after I began having SEs.
Bookwoman- I am sorry you are going though this again! ((HUGS)) Looks like from your DX your left side has stayed healthy since your rads in 2010. Now the right is cooked too, your done with all this! And I hope the hair stays away for both of us!
-
Thank you everyone for your kind words and understanding.Yes, it sucks mightily to have the shingles on top of the rads burn. It is healing and getting better everyday but it still burns and hurts like hell. I am going to try the pepper cream I read about and see if that helps. It's hurts the most at night when I am supposed to be sleeping. I can't remember the last decent night's sleep I had.
I;ve read they won't give you the shot until after 50 unless you whine and after this happened to me and the many stories I have heard. Whine you should! It's likely an expensive vaccine and they don't want to pay for it. No one should be subject to this pain if they can avoid it. This is why I posted. GO GET THE SHOT AS SOON AS YOU CAN. I am nagging my parents and inlaws into getting it.
I can't even reach the part the itches the most on my back to put cream or to rub it which makes it feel better. The skin is peeling and flaking off now.
I excpect it to take awhile to recover from this baking or frying or what ever you want to call it. How long before everything is back to that new normal?
-
One thing I forgot is coverage with the Summer coming. I was told that I needed to not expose the rads are to sun and mine goes pretty hight up above the clavicle. I guess no skimmy strings strap dress I was looking forward too. I need to find some light sweaters or something. It needs to be the softest of the soft.
I'm ordering some swim shirts. Land's End has some good ones. Cute suits for all body types incl mastectomies. Any one else have any place to get clothing that covers up for the summer that is fashionable for the chic short haired foxy mama I am becoming?
-
Hi, Ladies. Congrats to all of you who are finished or finishing soon! I don't get to login much but have just caught up with your stories and am feeling inspired again about getting through my last two weeks.
-
Queenkong, I am so sorry to hear about your double whammy of radiation reaction and shingles. That is really awful, but please reconsider using a cream that contains peppers or capsation. That is used for arthritis or joint pain but is potentially disastrous for skin problems as it works by basically creating a burning sensation that blocks the pain sensation.
There is a historic story in my family about an experience that my naternal grandfather had. He was a pharmacist who owned a drug store in a very small town in West Virginia. It was in the middle of logging country and every Saturday morning the logging train came in to town and deposited the loggers who shopped and drank heavily and then went back late that evening on the train. One Saturday morning Grandaddy looked up from his counter to see a huge logger standing at his counter. He said "Doc, I got me the piles (lay term for hemorroids in those days) and I want you to to sell me some Ben Gay(an old capsacion based cream)." Grandaddy said that he would be happy to sell him something else for his piles but that he thought that Ben Gay was a very bad idea. There was no talking the man out of it. He said(Doc, this other feller told me about it and said that it cured his and I'm just a big a man as he is." That was the last trip before winter set in and Grandaddy often wondered what had happened to the man. The next Spring the man came back and Grandaddy anxiously asked him how the Ben Gay had worked. He said "Doc if I ever meet that guy in the woods he is a dead man. I waited until a Sunday morning when we didn't have to work and I put it on and it started to burn and I lit out of the bunkhouse and ran down to the creek and chopped a hole in the ice and sat there till noon." Unless you have access to a frozen creek you might want to reconsider a therapy that puts capsacian on a burn.
