Hi,

I had a PBMX age 44 and I went into menopause a few months after my PBMX. Maybe I'm the right age for menopause but I was just wondering...

Mine started as a PBMX but didn't end that way, but anywho - it did not throw me into menopause. I have had no treatment until recently starting Tamox.  I'm 52 and there seems to be no end in sight. I'm hoping Tamox will get me there!

I had already started getting hot flashes/menopause symptoms in my early 40s/late 30s before I was diagnosed with cancer. Perimenopause usually starts in the early 40s, but can start in the late 30s or earlier for some. Here are some of the symptoms:

It is perfectly normal to be in perimenopause in your 40s. I really don't think there is a link between a mastectomy and menopause. I haven't seen data that supports that.

Are  you on any medication to suppress your hormones like Tamoxifen? If you are, that can cause hot flashes, I think.

Either way, welcome to the hot flash club. If you need help dealing with menopause there is a Hot Flash Forum on breastcancer.org in the Hormonal Therapy before, during, after section.

I started having perimenopausal symptoms at around 37.My grandmother had her last period at 41 & I started my period at ten so I was just hoping I was going to so like she did. Unfortuneately, although I was going months without one, I would still have several in a row & then stop again. Kept that up until I had my hysterectomy for ovarian cancer at 50.

I thought I would go insane from the mood swings & insomnia. I never really believed in PMS until perimenopause started. Then I was depressed or a raving bitch for about a week & a half every month. It was also like someone just turned off my sleepy switch. Ugh!

Now I have the evenest moods since I was about fifteen. Menopause is great. It is getting there that sucks!
