So...whats for dinner?
Comments
-
Last night's dinner was fish tacos.... not at all what I had planned, but since we are leaving tomorrow, I realized we needed to eat the ripe mangos, tomatoes, and avocado. I had already bought some beautiful cod, so that was dinner. In actual fact, there was no taco. Instead I dressed some shaved cabbage with lime juice and rested the hot fish on top. Served with sliced avocado, mango salsa, and pico de gallo. Corn chips on the side.
Tonight I made some tagiatelle. [No pictures of me covered in flour however.] Pulled some Google Duck Ragu from the freezer and made a salad with every vegetable left in the fridge. Why Google Duck Ragu? One of my husband's clients works at Google, and on Fridays they have a huge and fancy buffet spread for the employees. This guy brings us the leftovers. One week is was [I kid you not] 6 lbs of cooked duck breasts. So, I made quarts of this ragu. The kids will be here soon, and I will make the same thing for them. We will leave at 7am for the airport so they want to spend the night here instead of at their home with is 40 minutes north.
Though I am not thrilled to be making this trip, at least there is really good Georgia BBQ at the other end.

Bobo, hope for good news today, sent you a PM
Debbie, I hope Chuck is doing OK xoxo
I have found a doc at Beth Israel/Deaconess who says, "don't put yourself through that" I will see him next Tues. There wil be much better and easier shorter treatments in 6 months that my doc in this back water town of RI didn't know about. So I will wait, depending on visit.
I found great green kale etc smoothies in a magazine at the "ahem" colonoscopy" center. which I scarfed with one nurse's permission and will post soon. Report was clear and great. Versed was very creepy. :O
-
Bobo... Also hoping you got great news.
Bedo... Kale smoothies sound interesting, would like recipes. Glad for you that report was good. How was Versed creepy? Have surgery Friday, and would love something that keeps me from remembering the nasty/disgusting smell of the gas. Wish I could wipe that memory from my brain!
Dinner tonight: made 2 dinners for a friend who was in the ER for a couple days (pancreatitis). Made chili with cornbread for one dinner and chicken, broccoli, mushroom Alfredo for the other dinner with 2 kinds of brownies (from a box, too lazy) for her and her kids. After cooking all that, sautéed a chicken cutlet for DH and myself for sandwiches (that's what DH wanted). -
Interesting day. Waited all day for the AC man to show. Finally called again at 4:45 (called also at 11 am) and got AC back on at 6. 'Course today the temp is 48 and only into 50s. Big thunderstorms and elec. off from 4-7. Gosh are we dependent on modern conveniences. Had spaghetti/jarred sauce/frozen meatballs. DH pronounced delish. I think he was surprised to get much at all. Elec. co. still working down the street. Had my hot tea and DH's coffee made.
Pray for the little Czech community of West. Pictures from news devastating. They were fighting a fire in the fertilizer plant b4 the explosion.
-
I saw the pictures from West this morning - horrific! My thoughts are with everyone there.
And for some good news from my oncologist about the results of my PET scan:
Hi there,
It looks great. The report says there is a new spot in the liver, but that is compared to December. We don’t know what that looked like before we started the gemzar. The chest looks fantastic, and the adrenal lesion is no longer active.
So, let’s keep going with the gemzar!
Regression, serious regression!!!
-
Michelle. I have a huge smile right now! I had someone ask if I'd won the lottery "or something". :-) I just said it was the "or something" that was even better......
I am so thrilled for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eric -
Michelle - Regress, Regress. Shall we write an anthem for that?? Who are our musicians? Bedo where are you? Super Duper news Michelle.
-
Michelle.. great news! Celebrate life today! Enjoy all that is good and beautiful around you!
-
Wow - Michelle!! Just Wow. Such wonderful wonderful news.
-
Oh Michelle, that is truly wonderful news!
-
Michelle, so excited for you....and great to hear some GOOD news this week! Have a great celebration!
-
Michelle- I am doing the happy dance with you! Such wonderful news! I am so happy for you and your family.
-
Yaaaaaaaaay, Michelle! That Gemzar is just kicking @ss even at 50%!!!!! Very happy for you!
2nd,
I has to look back to see what surgery you're having tomorrow... Looks like you're heading in for reconstruction surgery tomorrow.... Will be thinking of you! -
Yesterday was a fun, if exhausting, day going to Costco AND Trader Joe's. Lots of goodies (including those damned Windmill cookies) brought home. In spite of a pantry and freezer full of food, I have no idea what we're having for dinner. I cooked intensively for the past few days, so my brain is now void of ideas. It will probably be pasta lol!
After we got home from shopping, the guys wanted to go to a local casino. So we did. While we were there, we got caught up in a tornado warning and all of us had to move to the center of the place where the gaming tables are. That's the third time that's happened to us. Once in a theater in Branson, MO and another time we were in a store and had to go to the back of the place. Unfortunately, it was an "outdoor" store and where we ended up was in the gun and knife section. I kept thinking of that movie "Twister" when they were in the tool shed and all of the these cleavers and knives were flying around. I'm not sure being pinned under a slot machine would be much better. Anyway, we finally left the casino unscathed (well not exactly, we lost our $$ lol) and drove home in a torrential rain. We've had over 4 inches of rain in the past two days. I'm definitely feeling soggy.
-
I am so far behind on this thread I don't even know where to start...
Susan - my condolences, it has been a tough period for you and your family
Michelle - OMG - yay!!!!
Bedo - Hope everything went well - FYI, I love Versed
Laurie - sorry about your friend, so hard
Bobo - hope your surgery goes smoothly
Debbie - thinking of you and your family, sending hugs
Everyone else - hello, lots of cooking going on! Tonight is penne with marinara and meatballs, italian bread with cheese, and a green salad with balsamic dressing.
For the many on this thread with Boston connections - it is so unfathomable that someone would do this, now that they have good pictures I hope they catch these SOBs - my DH was in the Pentagon on 9/11, I understand this feeling all too well. I have a very good friend, stayed with her during my trips to Washington, D.C. for the Her2+ vaccine trial - her oldest, who will graduate from law school next month in Boston, was across the street from the explosion standing outside of his apartment watching the runners. He is fine, but scared and shaken, and was stuck in the lock-down. His grandfather was NYFD and knew many of those who died on 9/11 - fathers and sons who were firefighters, his two uncles were in the World Trade Center but escaped, his dad had worked in the area of the Pentagon that was hit but he had just left a few weeks before for another assignment in Colorado - this kid has to be asking himself why? I wish I had the answer for him - he is only 25 years old and this is the world he lives in. Sheesh!
-
Michelle, so happy for you! Yay for Gemzar! And for you!
-
All of this rain has really intensified my sadness about the events of this past week. I agree with Eric. I'm sorry it takes something so horrible to show us how good people can be, but maybe the good stuff is always there, just not as visible without the media microscope.
-
Nancy,
Had to laugh on those windmill cookies! They are one of my favorites and I get pulled in by their siren-song everytime I see them! Lucky for me they are in my local grocery store's bulk food section soooooo if I avoid that area, I avoid the temptation..lol!
I agree with you and Eric in that I wish it didn't take a tragedy to have people behave toward each other how they should each and every day....
As Michelle's signature line says... Be kind to one another... Words to live by! -
Michelle, cant keep the smile off my face.
Nancy, I love those things too, and when I do a big shopping, I always eat out, cause I know I will be too tired after shopping and unloading and putting things away.
I had leftovers again. Living alone sucks. LOL I look forward to making a meal but even small ones I have leftovers. Oh well, another day of not cooking isnt bad. I get to start on the rest of the freezer meals next week. Looking forward to the shrimp scampi one.
I was out in the sun one day this week. because it only came out 1 and a half days and I missed the half day! otherwise the water, she is arising! luckily, nothing near us to flood, well, except for the leak in the laundry.....
Much love to all.
-
Michelle, my belle... just WOW. Such good news. Debbie - hope you're reading and know we're sending continual thoughts & prayers. Thinking of the rest of you too. Taking some time to drop back a little & start treatment all over again so I may not be here as regularly. So far this week, port installed, first cycle of 4 chemo drugs, Neulasta today to perk up the white blood cells they killed yesterday. Feeling OK w/just Zofran so far but will have Emend as a back up. It was nice to read about the good food even if I'm not eating right now. Thanks you all for your good wishes.
-
Minus,
Been thinking of you and glad to hear that you are feeling OK so far.... Hoping that your chemo regiment is gentle on you but gets the job done in kicking cancer to the curb! Please post if you need support! So many here to help you through! -
Just read a great Julia Child quote: "A party without cake is really just a meeting." My sentiments exactly.
My thoughts are with those in the Boston area today. Hoping for the best possible outcome and that everyone stays safe. It's starting to feel like armageddon.
-
2nd time; just wanted you to know I hope your surgery went well today. I admire your strength & courage. I'm getting anxious just about my appt next week for Radiation. Maybe CA weather will lift your spirits & help you heal.
seaside; just curious, where do you live in Upstate NY? I'm in Honeoye Falls, south of Rochester.
Linda
-
Linda,
Sent you a PM.... -
2nd time- minus two and Bobo- thinking of all of you. Debbie you too.
My head has been spinning with all of the tragedy in Boston. My heart goes out to everyone effected.
Strange day trying to keep the boys away from the news while trying to hear what was going on. Pepper steak subs for dinner.
I hope everyone is well.
-
Wow, Laurie....I meant to tell you earlier this week what a great mom you are for protecting your guys as much as possible from the constant and repetitive media images of this violent week. It must have been a major challenge! Then to try to do it while following today's nerve wracking drama must have been near impossible! I so admire your efforts!! I found myself staying up almost all night, unable to give up seeing what felt like the end of a suspenseful movie!! I do not envy the jobs of teachers when kids in Mass return from Spring "vacation" on Monday...you can bet there were loads of kids who got a steady diet of vicarious trauma from this week's horror and will return to school in a pretty anxious state. Oy!
We weren't in lockdown today, but DH's relatives were, in the next town, and we were supposed to gather at their temple tonight for a family dinner and service as part of his great niece's Bat Mitzvah weekend. This little girl has Down Syndrome, so it is very special for her to have this ceremonial weekend after preparing for more than a year. By 5 PM, the temple in their town was still in lockdown, so DH's nephew had the dinner and service at his house, and we violated the lockdown order of their town by driving there. Didn't see a single cop, which I had worried about....but of course they were all in Watertown taking care of serious business! Had a wonderul dinner with three generations of DH's extended family, and a preview of his great niece's prayer recitations. She was adorable!
So happy that the bombing suspect is in custody, all lockdowns lifted and that she can have her Bat Mitzvah tomorrow as planned. I don't think that she was even aware of all that was going on today. Good!
Not to neglect food, dinner was buffet, mostly Italian....garden salad with balsamic dressing; chicken piccata; mini chicken parm and mini eggplant parm, yummy olive bread, ravs, and ravioli. Assorted fruit, cookies and bars for a casual dessert. /p> -
I forgot to say that.....I am so impressed with and so thankful for the incredible teamwork of all the law enforcement and investigative agencies who laboriously worked to bring that second bombing suspect into custody. I hope the trauma surgeons can keep him alive so that some of the mysteries of the motivation for this terrorist act can be explored.
In addition to feeling heartbreak for all of this week's victims, I can't help but feel pain for the relatives of these young men who feel unbelievable shame brought upon their family.
Sleep well, fellow Beantown (and beyond) folks. It's been a very difficult week. -
Lindadj, seaside. I used to live in Webster. My DD 1 was born in Rochester. Pretty and reminded me if WI.
Lacey, I am happy the Bat Mitzvah can go on, she must have worked so hard for that.
I am grateful that they got at least one idiot, so they can piece together what they can.
BOSTON STRONG! -
Sooooo happy about the successful ending to the past two nights drama. I hope we get answers, but I doubt that they will be satisfactory.
Last nights dinner was grilled pork steak, green beans and some pretty good corn on the cob. I think tonight will be grilled kielbasa, a potato rosti and some roasted campari tomatoes.
yay! The sun is shining two days in a row! -
Minus, bobo, Linda and all of those goin through active treatment right now...thinking of you and hope that everyone is symptom and pain free!
Debbie thinking of you and Chuck also. Hope he is doing well after surgery, and that the two of you are healing and moving forward with the good things in life. We miss you here
Today will be an afternoon of music and food at a fundraiser for the local animal shelter. We will be celebrating my hubby's birthday as well. Two birds/one stone kinda thing. Looking forward to some chicken barbq made by someone else.
