Kimberlee
You might find help with your concerns about prosthetics at a topic called, "Living Without Reconstruction after a Mastectomy"...you can find it on the Forum list at the top of the screen.
so sorry you are having to join this discussion site but you came to the right place for support
take care

Thank you DLB!

You're welcome, Kathy.
Not to go OT, but Kimberlee, I'm not sure why you say you're not a candidate for reconstruction, and perhaps that's your choice. But if by any chance it's because one plastic surgeon told you that you're not a candidate, and you truly wanted recon, please know that there are some brilliant vascular PSs around the country that many of us have used who do incredible reconstruction (both immediate & delayed) from natural body tissue (tummy, hip, thigh, etc.). Many women here can share their stories with you if by any chance no recon isn't your choice, but just something you were told by a PS with limited abilities. Deanna

my scar treatment of choice is medela ointment which is 100% lanolin. Ironically, it is wth the baby formula and nursing supplies at the drug stores - it is used for cracked and sore nipples. I rub this in along the scars and just massage in then use my regular skin moisturizer on the rest of me. So far, So good - my PS also suggested stepping up protein with whey protein shakes twice a day to help with healing.

Well I finally thought of a way to hide my LD scars and the upper scars where the skin was taken for the areolas (which is still red after almost 3 yrs).....I went for a consult today with a tattooist...I am getting them tattooed!!! nothing heavy...very delicate...something I came up with and presented it to her and she liked the idea. I am soooooo excited about this. I will let you know how it turns out....
-
Linda: Good for you. What an intriguing idea. We'll look forward to your reviews. I'm only 6 months out from exchange so I'll give the PS the full year before I squawk too loudly. I'm still using CeraVe - when I take the time (shame on me).

My husband suffers from keloid type scarring. He went to acupuncture for a back problem, and the doctor surrounded his scars with needles. I was shocked to see how flat they became.
-
Bumping. I posted this thread address on the Exchange thread since there were several questions about scars. Hope that will help revive us.

as of right now it is a no go getting tattooed....I went for a second opinion about tattooing the scars and was told that my scars were not "dense" enough...the ink would just run under them and would not look good. I was told to give them more time or to ask my PS if anything can be done to make them dense. I go for my checkup in July so will talk to my PS about it....I really don't think he will know what to do. So I guess the tattoos are not going to happen. I was very disappointed. I may try the acupuncture and see how that goes...worth a try....

Just wondering if paper tape has the same results as the silicone tape? Is it the taping or the "ingredients" in the tape?
I've been using Palmer's lotions and oils since BMx in Jan. I figured it would keep the skin healthy until the exchange. Now that I'm about 2 weeks out from the exchange I'll start again with the lotion and tape. Not sure how long I'll use the tape. Maybe until the scars are flat. -
I have a couple small lipo spots (1/2") that are red but not raised, 2 red slightly raised JP drain sites and 2 mastectomy incisions (approximately 1 1/2-2") that are flat but red. I will have 4 additional lipo sites that will need treatment once they are healed.
I am willling to pay for something that works. Thoughts? TY!!

Hi this product seems to be working for me because part of my scar is almost completely gone, and the rest is fading. My biopsy scar looked like I was slashed- it was so ugly it was painful for me to see it- it was red and thick and jagged
Its been 8 months and I still have aways to go but there is big improvement with that said I
use "Scar Guard" you brush it on comes in .5 oz bottles for about $30.00 lasts along time. It really has improved.
Anyway I imagine that I will be using it for many more months but I am seeing results- tried mederma, and two others..
Hope this helps and good luck

Hi Ladies,
I have been keeping up with all of the wonderful suggestions here and wanted to share my latest discovery: castor oil, for scars. I am going to do a trial and report back with the results (maybe I will be ambitious enough to post before and after pics). I started using castor oil to help with the sad side effect of thinning hair/ balding due to Tamoxifen. When I researched itIi found that many articles pointed to the compounds having the cell growth effect on hair on skin as well. Here is a link with pics on scar improvement. Good luck and thanks for keeping the bounty of good scar remedy info flowing.

thanks whitedove...I am still willing to try anything. My upper scars on my back are still red (been 3 yrs)...one side more than the other. I posted several months ago that I checked into having tattooing done to cover the scars...pretty birds or flowers....the artist told me that the scars needed to be more dense or the ink would just flow under them and would not look good. He told me to talk to my PS about it and maybe there's something that would help the process along. I did ask my PS and he knew of nothing....but
I went today and had an ankle bracelet tattooed on and I told the artist that I made a decision today about the scar tattooing....it would not be done!!!!!...LOL....dang, tattooing feels like a hundred fire ants biting at the same time. So maybe the castor oil will fade those scars of mine because they will not be tattooed. So this is my first and last tattoo...the artist told me that is what they all say but they always come back for more. I said like women giving birth...they soon forget the pain. I do love the work he did on me today. It is a rope with vines running around it..on the side of my ankle is 3 charms...2 breast cancer ribbons for twice DX and a purple cross between them. He asked me if I wanted anything else and I told him to do a stick runner on the front (I am a runner) and he did...just a little more bites and we were finished. Don't let anyone tell you tattooing does not hurt.

Linda- I just wanted to let you know that I think you picked a pretty painful spot for your first tattoo! I have one on my wrist, and while I was getting it done a big burly guy with 2 full sleeves came in and told me even he wouldn't get the wrist part touched up because it was too painful! I would imagine an ankle would be about the same.
Obviously, they hurt no matter what, but maybe the back wouldn't be as bad? Although I suppose there's no way to know until you try... Anyway, just thought I'd share.
Yours sounds really cool by the way!

I was numbed for my breast tattoos with lidocaine. My ps hit a spot that wasnt numbed and I about came off the table. You will not be seeing me get random tattoos!

That's gotta be EXTRA awful when you're not expecting it!! Yikes!!

Thanks Deanna!!

Thanks to everyone with all your tips and suggestions.....I am 2 1/2 weeks since my BMX and just over a week where I had the incisions opened again to reinsert new drains. I have 2 of the 4 drains still in place. My question now is how soon can I start massaging the incisions. They are still fairly new and don't want to cause them to open. Ugh that would be awful. But I just want to start asap to prevent scarring to be too bad. Thank you all and hugs to you all for your strength through this!!

Jamie,
I had never heard of accupuncture for scars before! Gotta try it (but have to be careful not to puncture my precious implants!!!)
Peace in 2013.

Update on Emu oil.
Read that it was a wonder-oil however it is not doing much for my scars.
Back to the drawing board.

I am a year out from my BMX w/ TEs, and four months out from my exchange to permanent saline implants.
In the very beginning, my BMX scars were awful - thick, uneven, and puckered. Because I was getting fills every two weeks, I zipped my lip and just let the expansions take place.
Slowly, the scars started to heal, and by the time I would have said anything, it was time for my exchange. I knew the PS would be going in through the same BMX incisions, so I figured he'd make everything nice at that time.
After exchange, I learned he only used the outer third of my incisions to remove and replace the TEs. The original scars had faded and flattened to a pencil-thin, silvery line. The new scars, though, were quite red and swollen.
I asked him about scar massage and applying lotions, and he said to wait. He had done a lot of pocket work at exchange, and there was lots of internal suturing and healing that needed to take place.
He was also a firm believer in putting NOTHING on open incisions...even things like Neoeporin or Bacitracin could contribute to infections. I was allowed to shower but not bathe until all my incisions had completely healed.
I asked him what products I should be using to minimize scarring. He said to thank my parents - that good healing of scars is pretty much the luck of the genetic draw. Some people have scars that fade, others don't. He said not to waste tons of money on products that often made promises they couldn't keep.
So here I am, four months out from Exchange, thinking how well I'm healing, and all of a sudden, I find a red bump on Righty's suture line...which oozes yellow when I press on it, and out comes a small yellow lump, leaving a tiny gaping hole!!!!
Talk about freaked out!!!!!
Turns out, it was the Attack of the Spitting Suture!!! Apparently, a dissolving suture can be treated like a foreign object by the body, and becomes inflamed or infected, and gradually works its way out... taking the path of least resistance. In my case, it was my incision line!
I immediately emailed the PS, described what happened, told him I'd used hydrogen peroxide and alcohol and Bacitracin, and asked what else I should do. He confirmed that it was a "spitting suture" and that if the redness didn't go away, to come in and see him.
Now I'm kind of starting over with healing these stupid incision lines!!!
(It kind of looked like one was starting on Lefty, but using the hydrogen peroxide, Bacitracin, and alcohol made the redness go away.)
Sheesh!!!

Just an FYI I started to use Scaraway silicon strips (recommended by my port surgeon) on my scars. It really does flatten and soften the scars and get them a little redder. I'm even using them on my scars that are 2 & 1.5 years old and it has helped. Just follow the directions and be sure to ask your surgeon when you can start using this. All the other stuff I tried did nothing compared to Scaraway.
-
Blessings,
Good luck on your recovery from the infection. I am glad you caught this early.
Lago, I have scars that are a couple of years old now. I agree that the silicone tape did the most for the scars. I am not sure if they will work, however, on keloided scars that are already old. I have a bumpy, fiery red scar where they removed a lymph node. It shows when I wear sleeveless tops.
Here is a new product my PS told me about. It is pricey but states it is the ONLY Clinically proven topical product to improve scars. Scar Recovery Gel with Centelline by SkinMedica.
http://www.skinmedica.com/skin-care-products/scarring/scar-recovery-gel-with-centelline
I will report back and include photos if possible. Now if only I could find something to deal with my hair loss (probably due to Tamoxifen) --sigh!
Cheers and happy healing!

Can anyone tell me when I can start massaging scars after exchange surgery? My PS told me yesterday to start using silicon sheeting (he didn't tell me a brand, just said go buy some) but I was also told that massaging oil or cream can help. I have an areola incision on the rt side from my lift and a MX incision on left. The areola incision is still very sensitive and has some small areas of scabs since I took of the steri-strips yesterday. Do I need to wait for the scabs to fall off before applying any ointment or doing any massaging? It's been 3 weeks since surgery. My PS did a brilliant job of reconstruction and matching after a UMX but he has NO opinions on any of the other stuff. Bras? Whatever is most comfortable. Exercises for ROM? Whatever you feel like doing. Drugs for pain? If you need them. Anyway, you get the idea. So...I'm asking here! Thanks for any advice.
-
I highly recommend you call your PS and ask these questions. S/he should be telling you.
As far as silicon strips I just used the ScarAway brand.

Thanks for all of this info and for bumping it up to the top of the list. I had looked for this post (knew there must be one somewhere) but hadnt found it. Much appreciated!
