Modified Citrus Pectin
I just posted on the complimentary medicine board and thought I'd check here as well even though this protocol is used in conjuction with conventional medicine.
I was diagnosed on 3/14/13 with DCIS and decided to join you ladies for info and support. I've been reading about MCP - Modified Citrus Pectin... a good site is Dr. Eliaz in Sebastapol, CA. I have my SSM scheduled for next week and I'm considering starting his protocol 1 week before surgery (this Fri) and continuing with it after to surgery in an attempt to keep the beast from returning. I just ordered a jar from Life Extension. I'm feeling very anxious lately with the chance of recurrence... especially on the chest wall or mets. I was wondering if any of you have experience/info/tips regarding this product. Would love to hear your input.
You are all a great group of ladies. I've read many posts lately... Thank you for sharing with all of us. It helps a great deal.

I'm just curious - how is the citrus pectin modified? The only experience I have with citrus pectin is from making marmalade the very old-fashioned way. You keep all the seeds from the oranges and lemon and put them in a piece of gauze, tied, and i believe (have not made this in years) let the bag soak in the fruit juices overnight and believe me it makes an amazing glob of gooey pectin - I guess it would be the soluble form of fibre you get from eating fruits (as opposed to fiber from grains). Wonder how it's made commercially and what would happen if you just ate the real pectin? no doubt something to be careful about..? but I've tried crazier home recipes...like straight cabbage juice - highly not recommended, but I often wonder if that's what kept my gimungous tumour from going to my nodes..........

Its modified to make the chains shorter so that it can be absorbed by the digestive tract. Unmodified is apparently undigestible.

Hello,
I want to echo a previous blog post that citrus pectin (MCP) does get modified. I think they use some type of enzymatic process to make the molecules very small so that they are absorbed systemically. Otherwise they go through the digestive system and can remove heavy metals in the gut, but won't have any systemic effects. That being said, its very important to research carefully where you are getting the MCP so that what you are buying is the correct type. Some MCP'so on the market are not the smaller molecules. There are studies done on the correct kind which you can find online or you can go to dreliaz.org which is an educational website to look at research on MCP. I have recently finished surgery and chemotherapy for breast cancer and have been taking it for over a year. hope this is helpful....oh...I use warm water and mix it, let it sit for a few minutes and mix some more or shake in a jar....then it dissolves well, and it should be taken on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before food. all the best, E
