Is cellulitis painful?
I have been fine, did a treatment this morning with my flexitouch went up and took a shower and now my entire lower arm is bright red and so painful. Pain is in my entire arm. I an swelling worse too. Can hardly close my hand. I feel ok right now. I have had cellulitis before but it started off small. Not like this. It isnt as red now but still red. I was just in the hospital for a staph infection in February and lost both my implants. I dont want to be in the hospital again.

allison~I'm so sorry to be telling you this but you MUST get to emergency right away. You really need to have this seen to ASAP. Please go. Let us know how you make out.
-
Allison, if you're still wavering about going, PLEASE GO RIGHT AWAY! The longer you wait, the more likely you'll be holed up in the hospital.
More cellulitis information here:
http://www.stepup-speakout.org/Emergencies_and_Medical_Care_lymphedema.htmPlease keep us posted as you're able. Hugs, prayers,
Binney -
Allison, I hope you're in the ER now. We all hate going to the hospital, I know, but this is very serious.
Please let us know how you're doing.

i called my onc and he called me in some antibiotics. We are hoping it does the job. does it always require IV antibiotics or can oral do the job too?
-
What relief to see your post. Lets hope the oral does the trick for you. I'm sure you'll keep a very close eye on things. Try to check your arm throughout the night. Stay well hydrated and take it easy.
-
Allison, hoping this will do the trick
, and if so it should help pretty quickly. You might want to use a marker to draw around the reddened area so you can keep accurate track of whether it's retreating or not. If it continues to spread please don't hesitate to head for the ER. Sometimes they can do an IV infusion there and send you home, so lots of hope that you won't need to spend time in the hospital again.
I'll second Marple's advice to check your arm throughout the evening and night. Staying well-hydrated is really important too, so do keep some water handy and sip often.
Thanks for letting us know how you are--we're a bunch of mother hens here!Gentle hugs,
Binney -
Were/are you running a temp? If you took anything for the pain (acetaminophen=Tylenol, ibuprofen, etc.), it may have knocked it down a bit so wait until it wears off & find your thermometer. The antibiotic, as it goes to work, should also help relieve the body's infection-fighting response but you may want to have those pieces of information as you recover.
I also agree with the hydration advice. If you drink enough tonight to get up and visit the bathroom, that's a good time to assess everything!
-
just an update, it doesnt seem to be spreading any. the redness is getting hotter however. I have not had any fever at all. I am just a little achy like i worked out to much. we took my temp on my arm...goofy i know but hubby wanted to see and my cellulitis arm is 100.4 and my "good" arm is like 84.
I am so swollen in my fingers now too. Can I do no type of LE treatment? I know I shouldnt but I am just asking because my swelling is getting really bad.
I hope I can hold off until tomorrow morning when I see my onc for herceptin. If I get a fever I will go to the ER.
They gave me 800mg of Bactrim 1x per day
-
Allison~ When I had cellulites the dr said it was ok to do these LE therapies: Neck excercises to open lymphatic drainage (yes, no, maybe, and I don't know), Deep breathing, Opening and closing hand above the head. Absolutely no MLD or massage. She told me to keep my heart rate and temperature down to prevent it from spreading. Oral Bactrim worked for me...noticable difference in 2-3 days, but took 3 weeks to completely go away. Good luck and stay on top of it!
-
Allison, you can elevate your arm on a pillow, deep breathing, drink plenty of water. Rest up!
Get well quick!
Binney -
Allison, your last post worries me. If this is getting any worse at all in any way call your onc again. There are a lot of resistant skin bugs out there these days. Also, it's hard to get good levels of antibiotics in places where fluids aren't moving well, like edema. Sometimes you just need IV antibiotics to get those bacteria-killing levels.
My hope is that you are on the mend, but if you are not don't hesitate to bug your doc.
-
Also, Bactrim is a twice a day medication.
-
Morning gals. My big ole fat arm is better this morning. It is pink not bright red like yesterday but still swollen and painful. I can not make a fist my hand/fingers are so swollen. I see my onc at 10am today for my herceptin so I will see his take on things. Maybe he will send me to the hospital for IV antibiotics.
I have had no fever and I did do some exercise this morning ...of course nothing with my upper body
I can not express how much I appreciate all of you and your support and input. I means so much that you guys are always here with a helping hand. ...no pun intended...lol
I will keep you all posted after my doc appt today. I will be interested to see what my blood work says
-
Kira, is the Bactrim even 2x a day at 800mg?
-
Yes, it's Bactrim DS--it's a mixture of a sulfa and trimethoprim--and it's always twice a day.
This is from epocates: I'll translate it--they listed the trimethoprim dosage, and q12hours=twice a day.
Adult Dosing .
Dosage forms: 160/800
infections, bacterial
- [160 mg TMP PO q12h]
- Info: duration varies w/ infection type, severity
-
Allison~good to hear your arm isn't as red. Here's to continued improvement.
-
Allison... I came down with cellulitis on Saturday.. I had a fever, nausea, pain but thought I had the flu... But Sunday morning my lower back ( where the redness was) was very red and painful.... So I went to the ER... I have been on IV antibiotics ever since. My concern is that I will now have lymphadema. I never had it before, and the problem is my lower back... Any input? By the way, I can leave the hospital tomorrow. Sucks
-
Betsy, I'm so sorry!
How about a prompt appointment with a well-trained lymphedema therapist to assess your situation as soon as the infection is under control? S/he can give you personalized risk-reduction help and, if necessary, begin treatment to keep swelling at bay and keep your lymph system functioning. If you haven't already seen one, here's how to find one near you:
http://www.stepup-speakout.org/Finding_a_Qualified_Lymphedema_Therapist.htmReally glad you got good help with the cellulitis, and I'm looking forward with you to your getting home and having NO further trouble!
Keep us posted! Gentle hugs,
Binney -
Thanks Binney. Yes, I really did not delay, and it was a rapid progression so good decision to get to the ER... I have been here since yesterday morning and supposed to be released sometime tomorrow.... It is definitely my intention to see a LE specialist once I am cleared... I understand massage is a no no while the infection is still active..
-
Betsy~ Try and call for the LE specialist appt ASAP...mine had a 3 week wait.
-
Kira, i am a dork. I totally misread my script bottle. It clearly says 1 pill 2x a day. My bad. Oh well. Once I got to the onc's office today for my herceptin the redness was back full force. My blood work was ok, WBC was in the 7's. But the pain, the pin and needle feeling in the palm of my hand was horrible. they sent me right away to the infectious diease dr. i could tell he wanted to admit me but since i have had no fever and my blood count was ok he had me do IV antibiotics and I will come back again tomorrow for another round and we will see how I am doing then take it from there. I will give another update tomorrow to see how it is going.
Betsy - sorry about your infection. I didnt have bad LE until 1 year ago. My first bout of cellulitis was 18months ago so it isnt a given that you will get it. Definatley want to get to a good therapist. Keep us posted. My first time I was in the hospital 5days.
Thanks again everyone...you all ROCK!
-
Alison, you are sick, it's easy to misread a med bottle.
We looked into compression with cellulitis, and light wrapping is okay, and may be helpful: http://www.stepup-speakout.org/Emergencies_and_Medical_Care_lymphedema.htm#compression
Hoping for a rapid improvement.

Betsy, generally lymphedema affects just one quadrant of the body (divide from neck to center of groin, and then from side to side along the waistline; front and back within those four regions = a quadrant). Since you had cellulitis on your lower back, it seems possible that nodes lost during your reconstruction are causing you trouble now. Your SNB arm is distant, so hopefully you'll luck out and LE will not trouble you in the upper body, but you'll want to make sure that the LE therapist you consult understands the nature of your recon surgeries. Typically flap recons remove some lymph nodes, and your flaps came from a few spots. I'd especially want someone who either understands gap and diep, or is willing to learn, and who can help you do what's possible to minimize risk of lymphedema migrating to your legs. I think it's not a 100% given that a cellulitis bout means you definitely have LE, but cellulitis is known to be a trigger for it. Get the best therapist you can find, and consult a specialist MD if you're not sure you're getting the help you need. In Princeton, you are within shooting distance of Dr. Kathleen Francis, who is an MD specializing in LE and who is on the National Lymphedema Network medical advisory board. She's in greater NYC, as is Bonnie Lasinski, a very well regarded PT/ LE therapist who is also affiliated with NLN.
Sucks. Totally.
Carol
-
Carol.. Thank you so much.. Since I never suffered from LE I actually know very little. As a matter of fact I don't wear compression sleeves etc... I had two nodes removed, but my primary doctor feels that my scar tissue could have obstructed lymphatic flow, not really a lack of node issue... I am in contact with my plastic surgeon who clearly understands the flap surgery and I plan to work with them to get me hooked up with a PT... There is a LE PT in Princeton Rebecca Golden but I know nothing about her other than that..
-
bdavis, yes, scar tissue can add to the problem, and the LE PT won't have trouble spotting the incision lines, but still node loss can factor into LE after flap reconstruction. I had only sentinel node biopsy and got LE of the arm, so I'm walking testimony that it doesn't take many nodes removed to set the stage for LE. Sounds like you have a great care team - plenty of us have had breast and plastic surgeons scoff at LE risk and even deny that swelling could possibly be from it. Hopefully your LE PT will be as knowledgeable as the rest of your team!
-
Allison, hang in there. Hopefully today will see a difference in the right direction.
-
Betsy, I don't know much about her either, but I do know she's LANA certified (which means she's fully trained) and she was one of the therapists who assisted in the PAL trials, a research study a few years back about exercise and LE. All good!
Let us know how it goes.
Allison, I'm sure thinking about you today! Hope you're watching that rotten infection retreat--and from the comfort of your own home. Rest up!
Be well,
Binney -
Hi all, my infection seems to be doing good and getting better. I have some strange lumps/bumps and some skin thickening around my wrist. When I itch my skin it almost feels like I am burned.
I see the doctor tomorrow to evaluate how things are going. The red is pretty much gone so I assume things are going good. No fever or chills either!!!!
-
I am also doing well... My pain is gone. No fever since Sunday. Much less red and less swollen. Antibiotics rule.
-
Ladies, good news indeed!! Allison, might be a good idea for the Dr. to have a look see at those itchy bumps.
