My appointment with Dr Zhong was booked in July '10, cancelled twice.  I finally saw her in December '10 and was told that my Diep surgery would possibly take place within a year.  I suspect that when she initially saw patients a few years back her bedside manner was terrific.  By the time I got to her I became a number.  She told me the facts of what was possible for me, took a few pictures and informed me that cancer patients took priority.  I thought that I was a cancer patient.  The fact that I was not a candidate for immediate reconstruction is in part one of the problems in getting the procedure done.  I left feeling deflated and sad, not optimistic and hopeful.  I know in my head that it's not her fault that there are so few surgeons performing this type of surgery.

Throwing a pamphlet at me with pretty pictures of happy patients only added to my distress.  It's been six months since my consultation, and not a word from her office.  I tell myself that I should have a better attitude and be grateful.  However, I don't and I'm not.

I had my surgery with Dr. Zhong. From what I understand, the delay is caused by a shortage of OR time. I do know that many surgeons take summer vacation and their surgical time is up for grabs. Maybe you could send an email to Rhea and ask where you are on the waiting list. I know I'm scheduled to have fat grafting and she said it will be at least 8 months because it's the lowest priority possible. I completely understand that and will impatiently wait for my OR date.

Also, the OR at the three UHN hospitals close down the last week in June, July and August. Very weird!!

Someone on the Canadian board mentioned a surgeon in London who does Deip and she said the waiting list is shorter and the surgeon has a good reputation. Just do a search and you'll be able to come up with the post if you're interested.

    Hi All,

I had DIEP surgery with Dr. Zhong on June 14th, I'm feeling REALLY good, everything went fine and two weeks out I feel great, I was just wondering for those of you that have had DIEP with Dr. Zhong, what does she do in stage 2, I know there will be a lift of the natural breast and a nipple, but I'm curious as to how she fixes any dents, ripples ect on the new breast, I have heard from others that lipo is done and the fat used to fix the new boob, but I didn't think Dr. Zhong did lipo so I'm curious as to how this is done.

Hi I am in Toronto and recently met with Dr. Zhong. I have an apt. on jan 10th . So confused right now and wonder if a masectomy is even necessary . had lumpectomy 1998 and now the cancer is back same breast . I am thinking of the diep , tummy procedure. I know the surgery and recovery is longer but would rather have it all done at once and use my own fat. they say the abdominal muscle is weakened but mine already is so ......

    Hi Geralyn,

I had a Unilateral DIEP done by Dr. Zhong and it's amazing! I am SO happy with my results.

I had a left side mastectomy, did chemo and radiation, waited a year and did the DIEP, my tummy looks great and my new breast is fantastic, I just had the nipple done yesterday..so no reveal yet on that, but I am very happy with my DIEP results by Dr. Zhong, she has the hands of an angel :)

ladym13 how did the tattooing go? I had my surgery feb 28 and felt pretty good until yesterday as my GP thought my right side too pink and ordered antibiotics and apt back to dr zhong. I don't want to take the pills until Zhong says so. Can one have infection 6 weeks after? Think the franken boobs look ok but not sure of results yet. Tummy ok

I'm also a patient of Dr. Zhong.  Can I ask where you had the tattooing done?  I'm leaning towards Vinnie but would be interested in hearng about others who have had this done in/near Toronto.

There is a wonderful woman in Peterborough who does nipple tattooing. Her name is Kyle Gutche. Check her website at Cosmetic Transformations. She did my eyebrows.

Geralyn, I had an infection for 3 months - my abdomen was really bad...opened up and had to be packed daily by visiting nurse.  so yes, it can happen....hope you're doing well despite the pinkness......

ladym13 - can't wait to hear how you like your new tattoo..I had nipple creation a year ago and have put off tattoo because have had ongoing rash...but clearing up now so I must get on that!
