Stitching the pieces together

Melissa - your blocks look great. You did an amazing job for your first time. The sashing and post (corner squares) will be a piece of cake for you to do. There is one tip that I thought of the other night when I could not sleep that I wanted to share with you that I learned the hard way. That is, when you have points on the edge of a block it is a good idea to have 1/4 inch between the end of the point and the edge of the square. Otherwise when you put the sashing in or attach the next block you will lost part of the point that you worked so hard to get. If the point goes to edge on the block the end of it will be hidden by the seam allowance. Does that make any sense? I am really tired tonight and not sure I am making much sense tonight. Better get to bed. Anyway congratulation on the fine job you are doing. Happy quilting and learning more of the techniques. AJ

Melissa, are all of the squares hand sewn? They look wonderful. I noticed the yellow flying geese as well. You did a great job!
-
Meece, those geese are red/orange!! What colour is my face in my avatar....?
-
Meece, only two were hand pieced. She's trying to teach us a lot of different techniques in just six classes. I'm getting ready to add sashing, a double & MITERED border, corner squares & it will be hand quilted.
Barb, they are very yellow:)
I also just signed up to take the intermediate class & oh crap, did I ever go fabric shopping this morning. I also looked at that Hancock's of Paducah website. I am in big trouble... -
Oh, and thank you Elismo for the hints. I'm not sure how easy it is going to be because a few of my blocks aren't completely square. She showed me where to fix one of them so that should help.
-
What the heck are "fling geese", cause I don't see geese in Melissa's quilt?
-
The little pieces that look like arrows going around the block in a circle.
-
Thanks-I sorta suspected but wasn't sure.
-
If we're talking about the flying geese in the block with the heart...aren't those geese red?????
-
There are both orange/white ones and yellow/yellow print ones. -
Whew! I had to go back to the picture and look to see if I had imagined things.
-
Barbe - the color of your face on your avatar is great, but the colors are solid yellow on a patterned yellow, orange and white on white. Probably the color saturation on your screen needs to be adjusted slightly.
Hugs girlfriend. AJ
edited to correct the auto corrections. ARGHHHHH
-
I now see the yellow on yellow ones!! Whew! Thought I was going crazy!!! Lesson to you Mel...those yellow ones have very little contrast and don't show up well! Better to learn that now than when you've done your masterpiece! Hold your work up and look at it in the mirror or take a picture and look at it. You'll get a very different impression of it then.
Still thinking you did a damn fine job!!! What did your teacher say??
-
I agree!

Someone emailed me these cute stories:
My granddaughter came to spend a few weeks with me,
and I decided to teach her to sew. After I had gone
through a lengthy explanation of how to thread the
machine, she stepped back, put her hands on her hips,
and said in disbelief, "You mean you can do all that,
but you can't play my Game Boy?"

Damn, damn, damn...MRI is birads 4 again. Won't know any details until my f/u Wednesday.
-
Those are cute, barbe.
-
I love the one about the Gameboy!
-
We made an early trip to AZ for the new baby who decided to arrive on Monday instead of Friday. I can now sew PINK borders on the quilt.
Baby Whoo arrived on Monday April 8 at 12:21 pm weighing in at 8 pounds 9 ounces and 19 inches long. I will call her Lala. (Named AYLA pronounced i-la)
Grandma did a little photo shoot with her yesterday!
-
Oh Meece.....congrats Grandma! She is gorgeous! Her name is so pretty and reminds me of a character I read I a book.......lol.
-
Yeah, Clan of the Cave Bear! Strong warrior woman! she is precious Meece.
-
That's the one Eph.....lol. Loved reading and rereading that whole series.......wish there were more. 😔
-
Congratulations Meece. She's beautiful.
-
Congratulations on the lovely little girl Meece.
-
You know those perfect hand-quilted quilts that you almost wonder if they are machine quilted because the stitches are so small & even? No one will be confused about my first one:)
-
Oh Melissa, you should have seen mine. You will be so glad you have learned all the techniques you have on this piece. You are doing great, and have inspired lots of us to get going again.
Hugs Ginger
-
Ginger, I'm laughing. I accepted a while ago that this is a learning process & it will be far from perfect. What was funny was listening to everyone in class pick their own apart when we brought in our finished tops and all the rest of us thought the others looked lovely. We really are our own harshest critics and should learn to quit it.
-
Melissa, I hang my very first wall quilt in every sewing room I've had!! I even hung it in my quilt store for over 5 years!! It's so naive that it would be embarrassing if I hadn't improved so much...hehehehhee I use it to show that ANY work is glorious if it's made with true joy!
-
Congrats Meece!!! You got a PINK one!! I'm envious....sigh....
(For those that may not know, I have 3 grandSONS - all 2 years old right now!!)
-
Barbe, it is so true. Part of what I find charming about some old ones I have are the imperfections & idiosyncracies.
