Ketogenic diet? I am so confused

Options

Well, veggies are supposedly toxic for you and we should just be consuming meat to keep insulin down...sooo confusing.  Interesting link about review of Ketogenic diet and this reviewer's take (she is a doctor herself) on veggies etc...scroll thru her site...so, confused.

Thanks, Joelle! I've been looking for a good summary of Seyfried's work. They've been working on this keto research for years. Are you going to buy the Seyfried book? It's mainly for scientists, isn't it?

His talk on youtube is good from the Ancestral Food scholars or something like that.

The vegetarian diet isn't anti-cancer--that's an old myth people are totally committed to so I don't get into it with anybody.

Do you do ketogenic then? I thought Dr. Gonzalez says breast cancers do better on veg diet? Max Gerson said all tumours grew back when consuming fat. Gonzalez says cancer can live on fats along with glucose. Gosh, so confused

I did keto years ago but they've learned a lot since then. I didn't take enough fat. There seems to be several versions of the ketogenic diet that the scientists have used in the studies but they all work on the "program" of the cancer cell.

Some people love Gerson. But his program works for some and not for others. I've known people who have gotten dramatically better and one woman who went there and got worse. I see the dilemma. How do you know which works for your metabolism????? I'm more inclined to go paleo. I never felt well on the veggie diet--tho it sure was more convenient than paleo.

I know that at Gonzalez clinic they use a hair test to see what metabolic diet is best...I am familiar with paleo, maybe I will do that.  I can never see myself going totally vegan anyways.  I have such cravings for a little raw milk here and there and fish etc...

Do you do the water fast at all?

    Hi Joelle

I spent the weekend looking at that site and others, I feel I will move into this diet. Yes, I too feel confused but researching and keep in touch I am going to get a partner for this one, think I will run it past my GP and read a lot while moving towards the diet at home. It is late but if you are interested in the diet, keep in touch.

ive decided to reduce carbs and avoid sugar. Im also very confused but I guess instead of resigning as I felt like doing before easter its better to do something. This makes sense although there doesnt seem to be "one right answer".

Joelle, I recognize you and the others in this thread! At this point in my treatment, (5 months pfc & 3 mos pfr) I think it's important to eat well and not necessarily to an extreme such as keto though I think keto can be great for weight loss for some people and other conditions including a way to starve some cancer cells. Since I have opted for a conventional treatment - tamoxifen - I feel it should be paired with a somewhat more conventional environment in my body. Basically, the women who did well on tamo in studies have probably not been on keto diets also. So I eat a moderate carb paleo/wapf (weston a. price foundation) mashed together diet because it works well for me for my overall health and well being. I differ a bit from paleo in that I'll eat some grains that I have soured and beans that I have soaked. Also, I am not as heavy a meat eater as some though there are other paleo followers that also do modest meat consumption.

I also started tracking my food intake in early March. It's been really educational to pair that with the reading I do and the info out there on various diets. I started initially to make sure I was getting enough food because I was losing weight on Tamoxifen. I think that may be plateauing now. My new goal I just started on is bring my daily average of sugar intake down to the recommended 40 grams for women. This does not mean 40 grams of carbs, just sugars - so something carb-heavy like the sourdough teff & buckwheat waffles I eat most days have very little sugar in them (the carbs in those should digest more slowly) but a banana or frozen yogurt or such obviously have sugars in there. I've got my average down to 56g as of today so that's something!

i understand the logic behind keto diet, but its not easy as it sounds. i know a guy who has stage 4 colon cancer. he is on a strict keto diet. he has been on it for months. his last blood glucose level read 6.3. thats pre diabetic. so just because u r on a keto diet doesnt mean u gonna achieve low glucose levels or maintain them. having said that some of his previous readings have been brilliant. good luck.

Nixie, I read somewhere that if you are on the ketone diet and you don't get ENOUGH fat, your sugar levels will go up!  I will try to find that link for you.

I'm struggling with trying the ketone diet or the exact opposite - the McDougall diet. Sheesh!

I'm getting ready to start a ketogenic diet tomorrow.. little nervous, but also excited. I already do water fasts before chemo and have had a lot of success with that, so this diet seems promising. It does a lot of what the fasting already does, but instead of getting a few days it would be an every day thing. Good luck with it! Maybe we can keep each other informed. :)

I'm thinking about trying this.  I've read that tumors take up glucose but cannot use ketones and I am such a sugarholic that this is bound to work for me.  Heartnsoul, what I heard about that is that esp in the beginning your body can turn proteins into glucose and the way to stop that is to eat more fat.

I thought I would share my experience with the ketogenic diet.  I did it for a little over a month between the time of my initial diagnosis and my first neoadjuvant chemo.  I used urine strips to make sure I was in ketosis.  During that time, my tumor didn't shrink, but it didn't grow either.  I know this because I happened to have ultrasounds that measured it both at the beginning and at the end of the time I was doing the diet.  I did lose weight unintentionally.  I probably needed more fat in my diet.

I think that it probably depends on the TYPE  of cancer whether a ketogenic diet would work.  After I get done with all my conventional treatments, I may try doing a ketogenic diet  for three or four days in a row each month to try to kill off any remaining cancer cells.  I don't know.

I have found vegetable juicing really helps with my energy levels.  Juicing is really not compatible with the low carbs necessary to maintain ketosis, so when I'm juicing, I'm not trying to be in a ketotic state.  No matter what, I try to avoid giving my body a surge of carbs and I avoid simple carbs like the plague.

I've been on it for about a week and a half now and feel better anyway.  I can't tell if there is tumor reduction b/c I don't have a lump but my nipple that was pointing due west is now pointing straighter ahead lol.  If nothing else, it's a really good thing b/c I'm such a sugar junkie and I need to lose weight.  In fact, the other reason I chose to do this is b/c my glucose level is creeping up to pre-D proportions and with surgery coming up I don't want the shock to my body to throw me into diabetes as well and then I've heard that those with diabetes can't get recon due to infection concerns.  One health problem at a time please!

Glad you made it past the first week, pipers dream! (my daughter is named Piper). That first week can be killer. I find myself so crabby and tired and starving, and craving sugar. Then that surge of energy and lack of hunger once you reach ketosis...it's great that you made it past that hump. I've been eating this way for 2.5 years and won't ever go back. I, too, have numbers that are pre-D and never did until my Diep surgery. I have lost around 40 lbs and want to lose 10-15 more before my final reconstruction. But, I'm not in a hurry as I want it to stay off.

Lesson learned from today--never, never, never go into the grocery store when you're hungry.  I already knew that but today was worse b/c over 99% of the food is something I can't have since I've cut out dairy as well.  Maybe when I find a grassfed meat source around here I'll never have to go except for the occasional avocado.

I've been doing a modified Paleo diet, modified in that I am not eating most fruits and there are even a couple of vegetables I am not eating, like carrots or beets, at least for now.  I was at pre-diabetes levels too, and now I believe my levels are out of the danger zone!

However, for weight loss, it's not working that well.  My first diet plan after my diagnosis was mostly juicing and raw foods, and I lost about 30 pounds in 6 weeks.  Then I've been doing the Paleo diet for a 2 - 3 months and I have only lost about 10 more pounds (which might sound good but I am not eating very much so it feels like I should still be losing, plus I've been stuck at the same weight for maybe a month).

Is anyone else finding the don't lose much weight on Paleo (similar to Ketogenic, yes)?  I do the cottage cheese and flax for breakfast (not Paleo, Budwig!), so I was thinking possibly the cottage cheese could be the reason.

Oh, and for going to the supermarket, I find having a few walnuts with me in case I get hungry is a big help (and I don't eat many or that often so I don't think walnuts are the reason I am not losing much weight).

Shira, I'm having the same problem.  5 lbs came off right away but now my weight is barely moving.  Still, I can't seem to lose weight on anything else and I'm just trying really hard to not focus on that at all, which is hard.  I don't know why I can't lose weight--I'm 54, healthy except for this BC, and exercise regularly.  I have more energy than most people my age too, even now.  The only thing I can think of is I'm just going into menopause.  Congrats on your weight loss though--40 lbs is quite an accomplishment!  I can't even get 10 off.

Piper, try the "My Fitness Pal" app. When I think I am closely following my diet without any monitoring I tend to think I am doing better on it than I am in reality..

On low carb I thought I was doing reslly well, but the amount of almond butter I was eating on one low- carb tortilla was blowing my day off the charts.

Pipers, lugols helped me to lose weight along with a high protein diet, with 8 servings fruit and veggies. I am 35 lbs lighter since diagnosis.

When I fist start low carb, I like to use ketostix to make sure I'm doing it right and getting into ketosis.  I'm not in ketosis now and it probably explains why I've gained a few pounds through the holidays and after, even though I've eaten pretty clean.  Menopause is messing with my progress, too, I'm sure.

Thanks for the suggestions ladies but I have My Fitness Pal and use it and I'm coming in at less than 1000cal/day, I'm in full ketosis according to the keto strips, and take Iodoral.  My TSH tested 2.0 in early Nov.  I just don't know what I could do except exercise more.  Right now though I"m premeno and only now are periods getting really irregular and I'm guessing that's the problem.

Pipers, you probably need more food. Less than a 1000 calories is way too little, even if you are trying to lose.

Piper, perimenopause wreaks havoc on your periods. I never even believed in PMS and had always had short light periods. Then I started having mine get closer together, sometimes less than three weeks, and really heavy bleeding and clotting. I finally went to the gyn when I started and it didn't stop for 2 1/2 weeks. I thought I was going to bleed to death.

zogo, thanks for the article. I don't think I could do a ketogenic diet, but the Dr. also mentions doing 3-4 day fasts several times a year to benefit mitochondrial health. That seems more doable for me.
