Out-of-pocket money with United Healthcare insurance

Options

My wife is diagnosed with breast cancer.

Our insurance is United Healthcare Choice Plus with maximum payment of $250,000 per year per illness.

We are in Alabama.

We heard that MD Anderson is best cancer center.

So we are considingering receving treatments there.

But the costs are also our concern.

We have no idea about how much we need to pay on our own for the entire treatment (including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, etc) there or locally.

Would you please give some advices?

Thanks so much!

Your best information would come from a patient coordinator at MDA. You can self refer on line and someone should call you within a day or so.

I don't know about Alabama, but my brother in law had United Healthcare in Idaho and MDA would not take him as a patient with that insurance. We even offered to pay cash, they still refused.

I agree with what Scuttlers noted about calling MDA and talking to them. I found my initial contact to be a bit frustrating but everything went smoothly after that.

Interestingly, I also have UHC and they told me that MDA was one of their centers of excellence so I had all my initial treatment done there last year (2012),including a bilateral mastectomy and DIEP reconstruction. I live in New Mexico so don't know how much difference that makes.

Keep us posted on your progress, and hugs to you and your wife.

Edited to add...wouldn't have a clue on the costs and I suspect they won't give you concrete information until they see your wife and know what kind of treatment she will be receiving. You should be able to get information on some estimates for the initial consultation but that will also depend on how many doctors she sees and whether they do additional testing (which they seem to prefer), etc. Once the treatment recommendations are in, you should be able to get estimates and then contact your local clinic for their estimates for the same treatment. You will, of course, need to factor in travel, meals, and lodging as those will be out of pocket. We kept all our receipts and still couldn't exceed the IRS percentage for medical costs not covered by insurance. PM me if you have any specific questions.

    Thank you, scuttlers and Ysa!

Actually I have contacted MD Anderson.

They told me they would not know the costs before they see my wife and evalute her case.

    LoveWife,

I had United Health Care last year and there was no cap ($250,000/year).  I thought that with the new healthcare act, the maximum payouts (either yearly or lifetime) were eliminated.  You may want to double-check.  Best wishes.
