Wow, I feel a little intimidated posting here with you great athletes! I'm 53 and I've never been a runner but I've always enjoyed gym classes and daily walking. My DH plans to play baseball at the World Masters Games in Torino, Italy in August and last year I toyed with the idea of training for the half marathon at the Games.... but that was before my diagnosis.....
My only exercise post surgery (last November) and during rads was walking, about 12,000 steps a day, but the day after my rads finished I decided to start running anyway.... I'm following the "couch to 5 K" app, this is week 6 and tomorrow will be my last run for the week. Just two weeks to go to the goal of 5K!
I've had a few early niggles with knees and my left hip but after massages, strengthening exercises, and stretching, stretching and more stretching they have settled down. This week I also added a 30 minute cycle class to my 3 running sessions.
I live in Australia and I am now planning to run in The Mother's Day classic on 12 May which raises funds for breast cancer research. I've signed up for the 4K run.
So, are the cycle classes a good idea? How should I prepare for the race? Any advice would be wonderful! -

There are a lot of Galloway fans here (can get his training plans all over the internet including from runDisney), but the 4K will surprise you. It will likely feel like a nice short outing that is over too soon!
You actually can find a zero to half marathon Galloway plan that would get you ready for August. It only takes 12 weeks to work the plan, and the goal is just upright-and-smiling finish - no pressure. Your Torino trip would be a nice event to do and bring home a medal from especially if you are there anyway!

Welcome Tammy M43! I am NO athlete! I am a finisher- usually the last one crossing the finish line but I have a blast doing it. I am not even certain I can finish Boston in the time allowed but so what- just hoping to get my medal that says "finisher"!

Yikes! I love this board. It has me sooo excited to get though surgery and back on the roads. Thank you all for the inspiration! I found out yesterday that my surgery has been moved up from 4/30 to 4/10. Suddenly this is all very real....met with my oncologist today for the first time and it was encouraging. Pre-op meetings with surgeon and plastic surgeon tomorrow. I can't deny that I am stressing a bit.

Goldlining sounds like you had a great recovery. I can only hope that mine progresses as well.
RunFree16 I am hoping by the time I get to NH at the end of June I will be able to at least walk part of the way around Newfound. Just being there and breathing the pine scented air does so much for my inner peace. It's the place I go to in my mind when I need respite.
As far as food (or drink) during races, my favorite was the America's Finest City half in San Diego. Before the city put a stop to it, they had champagne at approx the 7 mile mark and frozen margaritas at the 11 mile mark, right before the long hill. I must admit I did indulge!
We all have had so many awesome experiences because we are runners. Aren't we the lucky ones!

Tammy - believe me, I'm no athlete either. I'm 57 and only started running about 18 months ago. I kind of accidentally signed up for a 5K (a co-worker with ovarian cancer had a team in a 5K awareness run, so I joined to show some solidarity) and really enjoyed it. After a few more 5Ks I got cocky and signed up for a 10K last year - and survived it! Then I got really crazed and in December entered the lottery for a HM to be held in DC this month. I was shocked when I got in! So I've been training for that one. The people on this thread are wonderful - very supportive with all kinds of training tips and ideas. They also got me into Galloway training which is the only way I'd ever be able to think about finishing the HM.
I'm horribly slow - my goal is to finish and not have to go in the straggler van. But as groovygirls says, I'm having a ball doing it!

Hi, Tammy! If you're doing the Couch to 5K program, you should have no problem whatsoever with a 4K next month. As goldlining said, your biggest surprise will probably be how easy it is! There's something about that race atmosphere that pumps you up. Just be careful not to go out too fast! And your trip to Italy sounds great - what a blast you'll have.
Donnabelle, since you brought up the topic of drinking mid-race, I can confess that I found the world's cheapest and quickest way to get a nice buzz on. I did a tempo run last night (1.5 mile jog, 3 miles at HM goal pace, 1.5 mile jog) and then, all sweaty and dehydrated, stopped by the wine store, where they talked me into sampling a white . . . and then a red . . . and then another red. Let's just say I did NOT try to run the rest of the way home.
(But the white I bought went great with dinner!)

Linda! I can't say that it's something I would recommend, but that frosty margarita sure tasted good on a hot day and with two miles of hill ahead of me!
By the way, how hard did they have to twist your arm to sample those wines LOL!! -

Hmmmm, perhaps with a wine or margarita incentive I could be persuaded to run.
I walked 5 miles today and will do C25K tomorrow.

Okay, I've taken two days off from crosstraining ... I am going to try to run 1 min/walk 1 min on a flat soft trail at sunrise this morning for 45 minutes. Groin is finally not tender to touch and nothing has caused it to ache this week ... not even biking up a hill so I am hopefully good to start back slowly ... it's been six weeks off and I am definitely ready to get back to my "true love" ... running ... I hope I can do this today PAIN FREE.
Mon: Elliptical machine at gym 55 min and bike 2 miles while daughters ran
Tues: Water jog/run 60 min and walked 3.1 "hilly" miles fast ... my favorite 5k neighborhood path
Thurs: Elliptical machine at gym 30 min and bike 2 miles while daughters ran
Sat: ... 30 minutes run/walk and 1 hour water jog/runHappy Running,

Just checking in. Not my best week and didn't get much running in - 3 on Wednesday. 4 and a half this morning in with a healthy dose of vitamin D courtesy of Ma Nature - spring is *finally* here and it is glorious!! Am all marked up like a treasure map for radiation to begin at the end of this week.
KSM if you are still on here good luck with your 5K this weekend.

lovestorun ... you nailed it, treasure map is exactly the feeling! I hope you do well through the treatments.
I was not able to do the run/walk without achy pain
but overall it is doing a lot better ... could maintain a normal stride without limping afterwards ... progress
. I ended up walking for a 5 min warmup, then 1min run/1 min walk for 30 minutes and a 5 minute walk cool down ... total time 40 minutes 3.27 miles ... distance thanks to Garmin ... first time using it and it is nice to have for distance/pace tracking. Icing down now and hopefully it will not be tender to touch after today. I may go to the pool later for some water running ... it seems to help.

Happy Saturday all! Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the begining of spring time
I had been running the first 2 weeks of Rad, but I am on 20/28 tx now and had to stop running this past week. The fatigue hit hard and my skin is so angry I can't wear a bra at the moment
I have blisters and my breast is swollen weepy. It cries and I cry. Hopefully this weekend will give it a chance to heal a bit so that I can tolerate a bra next week maybe for some bike or elliptical.
I am signed up to do a tough mudder on June 1 and hope I won't fall too out of shape, and that I will heal fast enough to get back in shape.

Ran on Tuesday and it was wonderful, but am having to take a few days off. I have been tapering my Effexor for almost two months, and was down to 9.375 mg (1/8 of my original 75 mg dose) and I decided to stop...and I'm having serious withdrawal effects. Enough that I tend to fall over when I stand up...which means running is kinda out of the question right now. As long as I sit still and don't move, I'm fine. Hoping to be in a better place by Monday so I can go to work. Otherwise I might have to go back on the stupids meds just to make it through the day. Oy!

My bunions have been painful/crampy off and on.
good news is that between the C25K and a little extra walking I did 3.5 miles at an average pace of 11-12 min/mile.
I will give it some time, but wondering if indeed I was meant to be a speed walker.

Nice to see everyones reports. I ran today, for the first time since last saturday. I did cross training all week because my foot was hurting. So today was the day to run. I figured if there is any chance of running Boston next week, I better go and see what happens. I ran for 90 minutes, and covered about 8.5 miles. The ducks stayed on the side of the road this time. My foot did ok, so I'm thinking I'll go ahead with Boston next week. Again, for those who are new, I went to Boston last year, during chemo, but deferred because of the heat (on top of chemo). So I'm at the one year anniversary of the completion of Chemo. I do plan to run....run to finish. I will post my number on the calendar at the top of the post. (if anyone wants a number or whatever there, just let me know). So, if you are so inclined, you can track me in real time by going to the B.A.A. site. I think they give splits about every 5k. Now I'm really getting committed.
I'm in the last wave (there are 3) and I'm in the 9th corral (I think there are 9). So I think I will be the very last of the 27000 runners in the line up. But that way, anyone I pass I truely passed. Groovygirls - are you in my wave? Maybe we can line up together. Roan? Havent heard recently from Roan, I'm guessing she'll be there. Hope everyone is doing well.

GREAT NEWS FIRSTCALL!!! I am so happy for you!! I will be with you in spirit and cheering you on all the way!! What a celebration you will have after crossing that finish line ... not only because you've ran the Boston Marathon but most of all in celebration of your 1 year anniversary of being finished with Chemo!!

SHARON & LOVESTORUN - thanks for the encouragement on my 5k today.
Must say it felt good to be out there. Am not pleased with my time (35:19) but gives me room for improvement!
I signed up for the Grand Blue Mile here in Des Moines on April 23. It's the event that kicks off the Drake Relays. There are also three Drake Relays Hyvee Road Races (half, 10k and 6k). Just told my husband I am going to sign up for the 6k. ....as he rolls his eyes and tells me to take it easy. But these road races have cool shirts, gear bags and medals! And you get to finish the race on Drake Univertsity's Blue Oval, which is kinda cool! Some Boston runners are coming here for the half. It's just kind of a fun time in town for track. Lots of Olympians come to run in the relays..... Albeit not in the little 6k road race I'll be running in.

I had a good run yesterday with no dog (she's in heat so not allowed out in public, LOL) and no running partner. I tried to just concentrate on remember why I love running and not think about my time and it felt great. Time was not where I want it to be, but better than a week ago, so while it may be taking longer than I want to get back to where I was, it is coming along.
5K next weekend - just trying to focus on not worrying about my time and just having fun.

As always it's great to hear about you ladies out and about and doing races and having fun amidst the challenges.
My surgery - mastectomy and tram flap is coming up this Wednesday. Thought I would get a run in every day and go into it in great shape but my foot had a different idea, so I have been walking instead.
I have been deep breathing and trying to stay calm but must admit to a few nerves. Just want it to be over and get on the road to treatment.
Good luck to the Boston runners. What an awesome achievement that will be

Lovestorun and Donnabelle, good luck and good wishes on your upcoming rads and surgery. You know we're all rooting for you. And while this may be a running thread (and "the happiest thread on BCO" - love that firstcall called it that!), you can always come here to vent and whine about anything and everything.
Congrats, ksm, on your 5K. Comebacks have to start somewhere, and yours has started. It's so cool that you'll be participating in all the excitement around the Drake Relays.
Firstcall, we were all wondering about your foot, so relieved you were able to take it for a test run and come back with a qualified good report.
Fritoz, your ability to run through so much of rads is really inspiring. Chemo was doable for me, but I have so many skin issues in the best of circumstances, I don't think I could have done it through rads (had a mx and didn't need 'em as it turns out). Hope the weekend gave your skin a chance to settle down.
Did a long run of ~12 miles today. I'm working my way up to 2 hr+ runs -- I want to get in 2-3 of those before my half. Was definitely feeling the distance at the end, but managed OK. (And felt doubly virtuous for resisting the "carpe donut" organic donut truck at my neighborhood farmers market, which I trudged by on my way home.)

The morning was sunny and I wanted to go enjoy a little above-normal temperature but the work I was doing (prepping for tomorrow's lecture) just wouldn't get done so I eventually got to the gym at 2 and the wind had picked up by then and clouds came over. I wasn't feeling it as much but I was already in the compression pants and running skirt and shoes and I knew I would like it better at the other end. I started out (outdoors) and headed for my 5K block, turned onto the first side of the block and holy cow, the headwind! I was going flat out and barely moving! On top of that, it's an uphill leg! However, I made it to the corner, got into the flat, the downhill side, and back along the bottom, and when I got back to the uphill side, the wind wasn't so bad. If the gym wasn't there, I could have probably gone a bit further - the first 5K is the part I hate. I think the uphill/headwind helped me get over that sooner - "I have to get up this slope" wiped out the "I don't feel like it". My time was a little better, maybe 10 seconds per km less, even with the pauses counted as running time, so I seem to be nibbling along with my infrequent runs, though the heart rate is still bizarre. When exams are over and the weather warms up, I'll see if I can improve the time while I build up the duration.
Afterward, I felt great from the neck up, and my legs felt marvellous. They have been twitchy since I missed running last week (weather, marking, and cooking for the parents).
I was admiring my run stats on Nike+ afterwards and noticed in my "records" the My Longest Run is the half I did Jan 2012 6 weeks post DIEP. Even a personal-worst time can be something good: the most time spent on a single run!
Great to read everyone's updates. Glad to see the news about no bad signs from the stress fracture, firstcall. This time next week, we will all be vicariously enjoying three Boston reports!
