New Gummy Bear Tear Drop Silicone Impants - anyone have them?
Comments
-
I had the Gummy Bear implants before breast cancer. They were in place for 3 years. I absolutely loved them and was sad to see them go. They were a bit cooler to touch but looked amazing and felt natural.
Due to complications I have one TE and nothing on the right. When I am able to try reconstruction again I will definately be using the gummy bears again, no question!
-
Hi tangles,
I do not have gummies. I have Allergan style 15, 457 cc's. I know someone who does have the gummies and she loves them as much as I love mine. They are firmer than regular silicone cohesive gels. If you feel both gummies and regular cohesive gels the firmness of gummies is evident. My ps had samples of each kind of implant for me to feel, albeit outside the body. My dd and I had lots of giggles squeezing the foobs as I decided what to choose. As far as the turning issue with gummies, yes it can happen but my friend's ps, who was part of the clinical trial, never had that happen. I think it's a very individual decision. My ps knew I wanted to look pretty much like I did before my bmx and the rounds achieved that look. I understand wanting to make the "right" decision and not have to go through revisions and changes. Do the best you can with the information available and know that you will probably have a good outcome, but there are no guarantees.

PS: hopefully there will soon be more docs with gummie experience! -
All,
How long is the recovery from exchange surgery? The PA in my plastic surgeon's office said if I have exchange on a Wednesday, I could be back at work on Monday. I was out of the office for seven months during chemo/BMX. Just went back part time. I'm hoping for short recovery with the exchange. I still have a while before the exchange as I just started radiation. Thanks. -
hi everyone,
after some investigating, i think i'm going to go for the tear-drop shaped gummybear implants. i'm scheduled for BMX in the upcoming week but i've elected to go for TE rather than direct to implant (taking the opportunity and finding a silver lining in sizing up!
). my PS is comfortable with the anatomical shaped implants and from my own research, it seems patient satisfaction is pretty similar regardless if you go for the round implants or teardrops...the only significant difference i could find in patient ratings is that the tear drop implants are firmer, as tangles already mentioned. i'm still trying to find some more information regarding the incidence of implants turning or rotating in the pocket - i'll keep you posted!

Head of PS at MSKCC was using them at the time of my surgery 2 yrs ago. Was doing a trial, while decisions were left very much up to me, I got the feeling he/his peeps thought these were best in terms of results--or shall we say, most 'state of the art'. Apparently if I recall correctly they'd been using them in Europe for a while and for some obscure reason they weren't yet full out approved here for use. (Go figure-growth hormones in our dairy is okay, according to our FDA). Women I met at the hospital at my time of surgery/treatment / and choice had opted for them and were very happy. Me, I went with saline mainly because when/ if they leak/deflate I want to know immediately. Apparently, if and when that happens with saline it is visible. My understanding back then was that with silicone, leaking is not obvious and can only be detected by MRI. Also, for me, to get the gummies at that time meant I had to sign up for MRI screening every few years. (This may have just been part of the trial and not part of recommended maintenance). I didn't know/don't know what my insurance coverage in the future will be (do any of us/??) so I was reluctant...wanted least maintenance and didn't care THAT much about the result variations/ differences. At least one lady told me she had rippling with the silicone, so the fact that saline may ripple more, I just didn't care that much. Didn't meet anyone who regretted it, all seemed quite happy with their choice. (And I don't regret my decision for that matter! - so it really is about you and what variables are of most concern to you).

I had my last fill yesterday, and although I know I want the highly cohesive teardrops, I am more confused than ever about what size after my PS visit. I think it's because he doesn't have a lot of experience, yet. He's very good and I trust him, but I want a say in the outcome.
Thank you Deborah, you gave me more information than enyone has. I've printed out the Allergan sizes and matched them against my TE size, and agree with your guidance. I'm not going to worry about the squishy vs firmer texture as I am very clear on one goal: I don't want to have to wear a bra - even at work. It's hot and humid here in Hawaii and I want to be cool and not have to wear one every day if I don't wanna! Not getting surgical nipples, either, just light pink 3-D tattoos down the road. So it's anatomical highly cohesives for me.
I'm going to email the sizes I'm interested in to my PS. Don't have a date, yet, but will be around April 26th.
-
Shellshine - how long did it take for the entire fill process? were you able to get back into a normal routine for you during this process?
I assume tissue expanders essentially come in one shape? IE the tissue expander is the same regardless of the final implant shape? Does anyone know?
-
Ashleigh ~ I am going in for BMX and TE's next week. I also was wondering if the initial proceedure was different depending on what type of implant I would have down the road. I was told it didn't matter what type of TE's are used. I'm assuming any alterations are made at the time of final surgery depending on implant. Does anyone have different info regarding this?
-
From what I have learned from Deborah (Whippetmom), your TE's should be chosen with your final implant goals in mind. I didn't now that at BMX/TE surgery time - had just been diagnosed, mind was reeling, and was not given that information anyway.
Dx 1/16/2013, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 3, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+Surgery Reconstruction: Breast implants (permanent) (Both)Surgery 01/25/2013 Mastectomy (Left); Lymph Node Removal (Left); Prophylactic Mastectomy (Right); Reconstruction: Tissue expander placement (Both)

my TE's were filled until I was happy with the size that I wanted to be (went down from DD to C) next my gummy bears will go in - no fills or anything needed after that. (She also told me that they only go up to a C right now in US.)
Yes TE's are all one size - a small fill is usually done at your the time of your mx..bmx. then fills are done weekly until you are the size you want to be.
If you go with saline implants they will be put in the size you want but can filled like the TEs...
-
Talked with my PS today. Still confused...... He did say yes the gummies will be firmer but NOTHING like the Tissue expander's. He said with any implant you probably would not have to wear a bra as they are all going to give you a firmer look and lift. Its the nipple decision which comes into play with the bra wearing or not. I have already chosen to not get nipples and go with tattoo's. He said the gummies are better for my breast reconstruction because my skin is thin and I wouldn't have to worry about rippling with the gummies as you would with other implants. SO I got my fill and left still un decided. I have till June so I guess I will keep thinking about it.
-
Tangles, that is what I want to know...how firm is firm?? Lol
I don't want them to be anywhere close to these hard rocks I have in right now. I want them to be soft and squishy like natural boobies!
I'm going in for a consult Friday and my PS will have sample gummies for me to feel. I know not the same as feeling them under your skin but maybe I can get a good idea of how they may feel once placed. I'm really leaning towards them. I like the natural tear drop shape and the no leak issue is appealing.
I don't want the round porn star look. I know some like the fullness in the upper pole but I don't like it now with my TE. I would much rather have the fullness at the bottom like a natural breast.
Sigh....so many decisions! I'm sure you will make the right choice for you

Hey you all. I am new to this area of the site. I have been on the Taxotere, carboplatin, herceptin site. I am now moving into the realm of reconstruction. I know nothing about it, yet, but have a consult on April 16th. Does anyone have any suggestions as to questions I need to be asking and can anyone tell me what the procedure is for this type of thing? Anything ya'll can tell me would be greatly appreciated !!
-
Rickysgirl, you might want to find out if you could do direct to implant with the gummies. That would be fantastic.
-
Ashleigh, sorry I didn't answer your question. I had the TE's placed 2 months ago.
I had 200ccs in each side the day of surgery, then 60ccs every 2 weeks for 6 weeks, then my last fill was 30 ccs. Although I am 150 lbs I have a very small upper body frame, so they look out of place on my body - so big!
Now I need to wait 4 weeks for the Exchange Surgery (no date, yet)......so my total TE time will be about 12 weeks. No surgery date has been set, yet. Waiting to hear from PS's Medical Assistant.
-
Hey jocelyne, thanks. Does that mean just one surgery?
-
my PS would not exchange the TEs until radiation was complete - luckily I did not have to have the rads so we can proceed earlier than I thought we would YAY
-
connie why would your PS not exchange until after Rads? I am having rads and my PS said we are doing it before rads. He said you could take 975 degree on the implants and they would melt. He said yes you may have some skin tightening, but that sometimes doesn't develop until years after rads so if this happens then he said we will just do a revision surgery. I hope he is right.........I want these TE OUT, they hurt me every single day:-(
-
My PS told me he wouldn't do exchange until after rads, either. His explanation was that if my skin didn't hold up well to rads, didn't heal well or things tightened up or contracted around the TE, we could wait until I healed better or try a DIEP. He would've been using the TE as a 'placeholder' until I found out what treatments I needed. He said there was really no way to tell how my skin would react and he preferred a more catious approach. I didn't need anything so we went ahead with exchange as planned.
-
my PS said that they can harden over time and would have to be replaced if placed before rads so she made it a policy not to
-
the implants can harden or the skin? I was told its the skin that can harden over time.
-
rickysgirl - in theory yes, but there's usually some tweaking necessary. I need more alloderm besides the swap to gummy bears. My PS insists on going under skin (sub-glandular) and not muscle. He said my cosmetic outcome if I did subpectoral wouldn't be as good. Make sure you ask your PS about this if you decide to go this route. If you do TE's then you'll go behind the pec muscle. Keep us posted.
-
you could do a subpectoral one-step to implant if your PS thinks it will look good, mine didn't but lots of women on our boards have pretty nice results. You might also want to inquire as to whether your PS does fat grafting if necessary to fill in gaps/ripples.
-
Tangles - she said it could harden the implants themselves
-
My new surgeon is also wanting to use anatomical "gummies", Sientras. They felt very squishy. I'm more concerned with possible rotating and perhaps "too natural" looking, lacking upper pole. I'd like to be between "stripper boobs" and "natural". But really, i'll be happy with symmetric and nips
Please keep updating
-
Jocelyne-thanks. I'm writing all this down. I go on the 16th for my consultation. I'll let you know what happens. Boy, there's alot to it, right?
-
Yeah, the 1st time I saw my Ps I didn't have a lot of info. I had checked out direct-to implant before and was pretty convinced I wanted to go that route. You haven't had your Mx surgery, right? If you haven't then you'll do everything during surgery. It's pretty intense and you should line up help/care for yourself for at least 2 weeks post-surgery. I'm single and it was pretty hard but I got through it. Are you doing a bilateral? I just did a UNI, couldn't see Mx-ing my healthy boob. My onco surgeon said she thought it was a good decision, so did my PS. I still have my nipple because my tumor was far enough away. My nipple looks great! Yes, lots of decisions to make. I didn't go the flap route because I didn't want to cut into another body part. I'm happy with my implant, it's comfortable.
-
Jocelyne, I've already had a uni mastectomy last August. I didn't want to do anything then, because from the time of my dx to sugery was VERY quick and I couldn't make a decision that quickly. I'm glad I waited. I now know from the SE's I went through that I couldn't have handled it. They got it all, it wasn't in the lymph nodes, so I'm good to go there. Just need to purchase a new boob. I was wondering though. Since my last chemo in December, I guess a lot of the drugs are now out of my system and in the last month or so I've lost 16 pounds, which I sorely needed. I was one of those who gained weight during chemo, so seeing the pounds come off is nice. BUT......I know from past experience that when I lose weight, it comes off the boobs pretty quickly. What happens when you get an implant and then lose weight? When I get my implant, can I get something in my good boob to offset the possible weight loss? I don't want to have to go in for tweeking if I lose weight. I understand some tweeking may be necessary to get the one looking just right, but I don't want to have to do more than is absolutely necessary, ya know what I mean? And I'm with ya on the flap thing. I don't want any more cutting anywhere else, either.
-
The weight thing is kind of confusing. The Mx'd boob will always be the same size because there's no more breast tissue, only skin. I'm getting an implant in my good boob, to match the Mx recon one, so I think it will be influenced to some degree to weight fluctuations. I've lost weight since surgery and feel really good at this weight. So my goal would be to maintain this weight, that way the boobs will stay matched. Not sure how it's all going to look. Hopefully great!!

I'm 3 days out from TE exchange. I have the new "Gummies" implant on one side and a smaller implant on the good side. I'm still a little swollen but they look amazing ! I can update more once the swelling goes down completely. Can't wait until I can Bra shop, although I'm going to a local shop that they specialize in fitting for a very good supportive bra. Heard they're a little pricey, but one good bra I believe is good to have. I also had a smaller implant put on my good side (under the muscle) so it doesn't show on top at all. After doing so much research on here I really believe I made the best decision for me. Good luck to all of you who are still going through this process. It really is one of the hardest decisions we have to make, because like someone else said..once it's done..it's done. Just take your time.
