Has anyone ever had pain in their breast during radiation?

Hello everyone. I have only completed 11/33 treatments and am concerned about something. The last two nights, I have been awake because of the pain in my breast. I'm not talking about skin irritation, but actual pain. My nipple feels like it is on fire, but only when I move certain directions. I talked to my doctor yesterday and she said it is inflammation from the radiation and told me to take ibuprofen. She said I could take up to 4 at a time. I have done that 3 times since yesterday afternoon, and it's not helping. Any suggestions? I'm scared of how bad this may get over the next four weeks.

My RO said the rads cause blood vessels to expand (reason for the pinkness) and recommended Advil before treatment. I took it about an hour before each tx and had no out of the ordinary problems.

I had several bottles of vicodin from the RO and from the surgeon and my dentist and one that expired two years ago but apparently still worked. I took as much vicodin as I wanted and got some relief from that. At least it made me sleepy enough that I made it through the night. It turned out I had truncal LE so I started physical therapy four weeks after I started rads. The PT really helped too. By the end of radiation my skin had a few really bad spots but the inner pain was pretty intense. I finished rads on March 22 and the inner pain is completely gone and the LE swelling is slowly receding. But I don't have my collection of vicodin tablets any more. Boo hoo.

Hi Carolyn,
I have plenty of Vicodin but it makes me feel pretty lousy. Can you tell me what your pain was like? I'm curious about the truncal lymphedema. My pain happens whenever I change positions. It sends a shooting burning pain into my nipple. When I got off the radiation table today, it happened because I went from laying down to sitting up. When I roll over at night, the same thing happens. I noticed today that as long as I'm wearing a bra, I don't have the pain. However, I need to take the bra off to air out the boob. No win situation here.

My worse pain was stabbing as if a knife were inside me and pushing to come out through the nipple. Other times it was as if a serrated grapefruit spoon was scooping out flesh. This wasn't the electrical shock pain of healing nerves. This was deep and strong and would last for hours, moving from one breast area to another. Sometimes it felt like my breast was going to burst open and would get hot, hot, hot and hard as a rock. Wearing a bra definitely helped the inner pain but aggravated the skin pain. I would retreat to my bedroom and lay naked, slathered with first aloe or Aquaphor and then with silvadene. My RO got me into PT the 4th week because of the pain I was reporting. The initial PT assessment confirmed swelling but the therapist thought such early intervention might prevent the LE from getting a firm foothold. The PT exercises are designed to prevent the lymphedema swelling from increasing in my arm but for the breast and underarm swelling I receive massage. It sounds a tad creepy to have my breast massaged but there was no contact with the nipple itself and that helped. After the first couple of massages I realized the pain was receding and that made me relax about getting my breast massaged. I finished rads two weeks ago and while my skin was still injured, the flesh pain was probably 75% reduced. Since then, my skin has healed almost totally. Better than that, though, is the pain in the breast tissue is almost 100% gone. The armpit will surely be painfree soon. I tentatively scheduled two more weeks of PT but I think I'm going to cancel. I can continue the exercises at home and if the pain becomes a problem again I'll still have insurance coverage for additional visits. Looking back, it wasn't that awful. Sort of like once you're holding the baby in your arms, childbirth was a breeze. LOL
