I am sick of smelling! I am trying to stay away from aluminum and parabens etc... But nothing seems to work! Help! What have people switched to after diagnosis? I just wish I could go back to good old Secret!!

I know it, but so not worth the health risk.  I've tried it all.  Coconut oil...sorta.  Someone mentioned mixing it with cornstarch, that sounded sane.  I use Toms of Maine unscented, it is okay if you use it a few times a day and shower every day, it can't conquer second day smell.

It has changed how I dress.  I buy Gap-style t-shirts, and I replace them frequently.  Once the smell gets in, you can't get it out.

Immediately after my BMX, my pits had a new smell - both of them!!! Wasn't neccessarily a BAD smell, just different.

Then I tried my old deodorant "Dry Idea Unscented" and it smelled like cat pee!!!! Not just on me...it smelled that way in the container. I even opened a new one in case the old one had somehow gone bad. Nope, still stinky.

    Tried Toms....didn't work on me.

Asked my MO - she said that avoiding the aluminum was important only during rads (which I never had) and that the jury was still out on the definite link between parabens and cancer. She said to use whatever I wanted that worked.

(I should point out that my risk of recurrence was VERY low after BMX, weight loss, and Anastrozole.)

So now I use Dove Invisible Solid - Powder scented. It works so well, I only use a tiny bit.

I posted about this in another thread.  I recently ditched my previously favored Tom's for Adidas aluminum free and it did the trick.

The only thing I have found that works is Arm & Hammer aluminum free natural.  Doesn't address the wetness factor as effectively  as conventional deodorants, but takes care of the stinkiness.

    Hi

I am in Sydney so this may not be available where you are but I use "miessence" (Made In Australia) also I have been told that the trick is to kept it in your bag and reapply through the day.  I haven't had to do this yet but keep it in my bag just in case.

    Hugs

You know, a weird thing happened to me after Chemo and Radiation.  I do not have any body odor and

do not need deodorant.  My Oncologist says it is rare but it happens.  He said enjoy it while I can because it probably won't last.

I use LaVanilla brand. I like the vanilla/grapefruit.

Sometimes I feel the need to reapply and it does nothing for wetness, but i love the smell and it feels nice. My PS and BS said I could use whatever I want, so on special occasions I use my Dove clear unscented.

I've tried numerous ones and nothing really worked until I tried Lafes Roll-On, which I buy at Whole Foods.  It's really good.

????? I was diagnosed in Jan and was never told I needed to change deodorant. Why is that? And what ingredients should I be avoiding?

Like Denise G, at least in some ways.

Underarm body odor (and staining) no longer a problem after chemo. Had rads on the left side only so there's only a few hairs that try to grow back.

I used to use Certain-Dri (pre BC) and it worked like a charm - otherwise I had underarm stains.

No antiperspirant or deodorant needed at all now :0)

Has anyone used that rock Crystal?  I got a sample size and it actually seemed to work better than the Tom's.  Toms would leave me with pretty smelly pits by the time it was bedtime.  So I bought a larger size of the Crystal rock and am trying that.  The real test will be when the weather gets warmer.  My husband thinks it's weird.

I use my favorite scent.  Since I don't know what the ingredients are, I'm sure this is a better option.  Didn't have chemo, but since menopause I don't have B.O.

I use the Lafes all natural roll on as well and it seems to work pretty well controlling the odor.   But I do miss an antiperspirant come summer though.

I have used the rock crystal, and quite like it.

I put cornflour in a small container with a couple of drops of essential oils in it, and use a fluffy makeup brush to apply. It was just great straight after surgery when the underarm was really sore from the SNB.

It worked well for both odour, as the oils are antibacterial, and the soft cornflour stopped the skin from sticking together in the heat. I should say too, it was during the really scorching hot Summer here in Aus.

My understanding is that deodorant contains aluminium which you might like to stay away from

You might find this article from the main Breastcancer.org site interesting: Common Fears With No Evidence: Antiperspirants and Bras. Also this article: Exposure to Chemicals in Cosmetics.

Here's an explanation of the possible danger of aluminum in deodorants from the Livestrong website:

"Using deodorants that contain aluminum may contribute to breast cancer development, according to the National Cancer Institute. No conclusive evidence links aluminum-containing deodorants to causing breast cancer, but aluminum-based compounds that are applied frequently to skin near the breast may be absorbed into the skin and cause "estrogen-like" hormonal effects. Estrogen can promote breast cancer cells; it is possible, then, that these compounds also contribute to breast cancer."      Deanna

Has anyone tried Botox injections under the arms to stop sweating? Any theories about lymphadema risk? My dermatologist said he'd do it for me but I'm nervous about it. I'm at a very low risk for lymphadema but low risk isn't the same as no risk...

Always a lymphedema risk with needles...I just carried 3 bags of groceries and POOF Lymphedema is here...

It is so challenging...knowing now what I knew before LE, I would have been so much more careful.  No amount of Botox would be worth this - trust me!!!

    Thanks Much!

Thanks for the links, Mods.  I have been really skeptical about the whole parabens-causing-breast-cancer issue and it's nice to have it clarified.  I'm still doing some research, but everything I've read thus far suggests that it's mainly media-hype.

Lavanilla The Healthy Deodorant works for me. Ran across this recently too....."Individuals who have cancers that are sensitive to hormones, such as breast cancer,  and those who have a high risk of these cancers should avoid applying lavender  and tea tree oils to their skin. There is some research that suggests that these  oils may act like estrogen in the body."
