Hi everyone!

Spring is here and I've just started RADs 7/30. Just wanted to start a Spring Forum for everyone just starting this treatment. These forums are such a great place to share information and experiences and vent, laugh, and encourage!

I hope some of the Fall Rad Club will join us and share their wisdom.

So lets begin this next step together...

    Hi y'all

Today was my weekly visit with my RO. She said my skin looks good...guess there comfort in that but I did ask her some questions: please help

Should I expect to see my back get tan too and should I apply cream there?

Treatment is 28 with 5 boosts... So the 28 are all the same level same time duration...

What should I expect with the boosts? How long is the zap?

Is the amount of light the same just pin pointed?

Follow up is 2 weeks after last zap ... How long will skin be changing? Color? Firmness?

    Breast size?

Would like to know what to expect...and if I should be doing anything to help in the laser tag!

    Thanks

    Cindy

Great Questions Cindy. I hope someone has the answers! I had my first treatment this morning and my skin feels irritated already. Sigh..... I have horrible skin already so I am sure I will be a blistered mess by the end of the 6 weeks.

Hello Spring rad peeps! I finished my last regular treatments today and will start with the boosts tomorrow. First of all, please drink plenty of water, I feel that helped me alot. I started with pure Aloe Vera several times a day, now I am using Aquaphor. Momtotenkids, you may want to start applying some Aquaphor if you are feeling irritated already. Today was the first day I went to work without a bra! I wore a tank top under a big loose soft sweater. I didn't get red/irritated until week 3 and I haven't been real fatigued either. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables; broccoli, brussel sprouts, tomatos and fruits too. Fresh air/walks will keep the energy up. I hope the best to you all, just take good care of yourself and you will do just fine.

    Anyone with some "boost" info?

Momtotenkids - everyone I met in rads say hydrate & moisturize! I'm fair skin and burn before tanning. Your rad center may give you cream use it at least 2-4x a day. I lube up In dressing room before I leave rads...more later...and nice lube job at bed time. Nothing in the am before rads...today is 10/28+5 and I'm beginning to see a tanner girl. Also eating more protein and carbs and walking...take good care of your skin lube up!

Tuxtails - congrats on boost time! Yippee finish line insight! Also thanks for sharing tips. I heard boosts pin point the tumor site and are very brief 15 seconds or such. How was your first boost? Fingers and toes crossed!

    Take care...

    Cindy,

Boost time is about 20-30 seconds and they said it was a "different" kind of radiation, doesn't penetrate like the regular and they target the tumor site. Two more to go! Your first boost will take a little longer, they want to make sure it is all lined up properly and the RO came in and gave it his ok. The redness/soreness is gradual and I hear the it will heal 4-6 weeks, the radiation is still in there working. Best of luck to you all and pamper yourself!

    Hi all!

Cindy, I just found your thread! 😊 As I posted on the other rads thread, I'm at 8/30. Laser tag is going well overall. I love my rads crew and my RO. They are all sooooo nice! I just switched to a new game time this morning and I got funny looks from the women in the waiting room. Felt like I was invading their playing space. Anyway, I'm a bit red and tender to touch. I'm lubing up with aloe several times a day and using Palmers on the scars and Aveeno as a moisturizer. I'll save the Aquaphor for later as I feel it's a bit too sticky for me right now. But I loved Aquaphor on my kids bums when they were little. It worked great! lol!

I'm drinking a ton of water and using the bathroom constantly. Not sure that's helping....

Good luck Momtotenkids! I was red after day one but it hasn't gotten any worse. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will just stay consistently red and that's it.

    Congrats tuxtails! You're almost done!

    Good night everyone!

    ~ Amy

Hi,today was my 16/33. My breast is getting a little sunburned and nurse ratcheting was finally told to give me a sample of cream.I had bee using Gold Bond with Aloe and vitamin E .This stuff they gave me has dimethicone as the active ingredient.I noticed last night that my nipple which has become an inverted nipple thanks to the Rads is a little moist and had a white film around the nipple and the skin almost seems to be breaking down a little.Well not as bad as I described but I thought I would ask to see the Doctor before I left today.Well nurse ratcheting decided she could handle it herself and didn't bother to get the doc.She told me to use a nipple shield and line it with some of the cream.

Hi, today was 13/20 for me. So nice to be past the halfway point. This is the second time with breast radiation--last time left, this time right--and I also have had pelvic radiation for endometrial cancer so I am kind of an old hand at thisLaughing. When I had the left done two years ago I had 30 treatments, this time only 20. Good luck to everyone.

Well tomorrow is the last boost for me and I'll be ringing that bell in the lobby for all of Savannah to hear! My skin is sore and red, but it is already starting to form scabs in some places and is looking alot better. The Aquaphor helps soothe and shields the skin, been going topless at home...tech said to try and air out when possible. When you get to your boosts, since the rads in being targeted for the incision site, the rest of your breast gets a break and starts to heal, so don't get discouraged.

Keep drinking water, it will help hydrate your skin and you will  heal faster.

    Hi y'all

Yeah 11/33 so 1/3 completed:)). My rad team is great...today I asked if I may bring my camera in as I'm photo journaling my BC experience. They said yes:). Each step I've taken a pic...seems so surreal, but wanted to capture moments...now this may not make a good shutterfly coffee table book...but it is my story lol! Is anyone else documenting their journey thru this crazy time in our lives? Just curious.

Hope everyone's week is going good to excellent...tomorrows Friday...weekend is 1 day away:). Take care...

tuxtails - I see you live in Savannah - going to Savannah is high on my to do list - I have read a lot about the history of that are and I find it fascinating - what month of the year would you recommend a visit to Georgia?

Congratulations on getting close to the finish line for your radiation!!!

Thanks for advice on drinking lots of water during radiation. I have had only 4 treatments and now get 4 days off because of the Easter weekend. I am not disappointed that my skin is getting a break.

Hi everyone - I started my radiation on Monday March 25th - I have had 4 treatments and now get 4 days off because of Easter holidays here in British Columbia. So far so good in terms of my skin - it does feel a bit tender but looks the same. I am applying lubriderm in the day and calendula at night. Is everyone as scared as I am about getting blistered and peeling skin? I keep telling myself just to take it one treatment at a time. I am getting 16 regular and 4 boosts.

Hi ladies! I had my 30th and final this past Monday. Next week I meet with MO for tamoxifen.

My skin is feeling pretty good. The "tan" color changes/fades to a different tint each day today. Just had to share this light moment here -- and I hope it's appropriate. Coming out of the shower today I noticed my rads boob is monochromatic -- the nipple is the same color as the skin. It struck me that my boob looks like a Vizla dog's face right now! ;-). (For those not familiar, Vizlas are Hungarian hounds, similar to a pointer. Their coats are a rusty tan color, and their nose is pretty close in color to their fur.)

RMlulu - I finish chemo on 4/2 and start rads 3 weeks later.  I too have been chronicling my journey - it's been beneficial for me emotionally to read and see the pictures of where I started and where I will end.

Congrats to those that are finished....so wish that was me!

RMlulu - I asked my radiation technicians today how much Gray I was getting - this is what I was told - I am getting 2.65 Gray daily for 16 times and then I will get 2.5 Gray for 4 boosters. So that adds up to 52.4 in total. That seems like a lot!! Ouch!!

Hi RMlulu and everyone! I will likely begin dose dense, accelerated partial breast rads (4-D external beam) the week of April 15th or 22nd! I will be having tx 2 x a day for 4 weeks (clinical trial) and then done! I will have a CT scan daily to make sure it is going to the exact spot so they can calculate it with the way I breathe etc. I will be having my simulation/tattoing and CT scan on Monday, April 1st. I am being treated at Yale in CT and the trial was perfect for me since I met all the criteria (early stage 0 or 1, >50 years old, small <2cm tumor size and wide margins >3mm's all around and lumpectomy only) for this one week, dose dense protocol and jumped on the chance to get it done. The trial has data from the last 9 years and it has shown recurrence rates that are similar or better than whole breast, full length rads (statistically insignificant differences in recurrence rates) so with my very early stage small (5mm) BC, I thought it was a good risk for me since many women forego rads altogether with DCIS.

I had the "fiducials" put in yesterday (seeds of actual gold) around the lumpectomy cavity. It didn't hurt until the lidocaine wore off and then OUCH! Today it is much better though. Hoping that this will help women in my situation down the road. Shorter protocols are already being used in Canada (16 txs) the UK (also 16) and MMSK in NYC (16txs) so I know that many hospitals are moving to shorter rads. Mine will be 10txs over 1 week, 2 x a day. I am excited but nervous to get this show on the road. Hoping that I can avoid the SE's.

Best to all the spring rads bunch!

I started Monday 3/25, same as you, adagio!  That makes 5/30.  So far no SEs, just a little red on the underside.  I'm tired, but probably because of the 50-minute schlep both ways to rads and the emotional hit of finally getting into active treatment.  I'm doing deep inspiration breath hold, and apparently I was the first at my cancer center to do that.  (My RO at the hospital where I had my surgery suggested it because it gets the heart farther from the beam.  I'm not doing rads there because it's farther away.)  It took extra set-up time to get me started because the technique was new, and they designed a panic bell just for me!  Now it's down to a science, 25 seconds per beam, two beams, not hard.  I'm told some people with asthma couldn't do it though.

I have a tiny bladder so lots of water drinking is a tough road for me.  Also, I have to do all my hydrating in the afternoon hours so my morning drive to rads and my sleep at night don't get disrupted by repeated bathroom visits.  But it sounds like a good idea to drink a lot.  When I asked my RO nurse about it (not even telling her my concerns), she said extra water wasn't that important. Have the rest of you heard from your RO or RO nurse that hydration IS important, or could this be one of those things that patients take more seriously than medical staff?

Gemini4, your Vizla comment made me laugh!  Congrats on being done, too!

Hi RunFree. In answer to your question about hydration, my RO told me that drinking at least 10 glasses of water a day will help with the skin issues. Keeping hydrated is good for your skin during normal situations so this made perfect sense to me. Best of luck with your tx!

    Hi y'all

RunFree16 - Welcome and congrats on completing your 1st week of rads:) what is deep inspirational breath hold? Interesting...RO said hydrate & techs/nurse say hydrate and cream...will help the skin...Even with TB I'm drinking.

April485 - hope you are feeling better and all that gold is behaving:)

Gemini4 - making sure leftie doesn't look like a Vizla! Ha can't get that out of my head when I look in the mirror lol!

RO team invited my hubby in today to see what rads is all about...they answered his questions and he watched the setup ... Always helps to understand the tx better.

    Have a fun Spring weekend...relax..recharge...renew!

Friday was my last day of treatment, I didn't think I would get as emotional, but when I rang that finishing bell the tears the started. Got to work and I had a card from my coworker stating that I was her hero...more tears! Such a relief to be over, lots of healing now.

Adagio, Savannah is really beautiful right now and not too hot to visit. All of the azaleas and dogwoods are in bloom. Don't visit after May, starts getting humid and will stay that way until September. The best time is mid March to the end of April. I'll be up your way in July to visit my son and conquer Mt. Ranier.

I noticed the most changes going into week three and I can't say enough how important the water drinking is...told by Drs and my sister is a nutritionist, got to keep those tissues hydrated and flush any toxins out of the body. Once treatment is over, vitamin C, E and D

    Good luck to you all!

    Thanks for this thread Cindy.

I have 6 to go, have done 10! I am getting a double dose daily so in rads terms I have really gone 20 times. I have a actual square that splits between breasts goes across under arm to back and then under breast. Its like a peice of typing paper in size, perfect lines. Under the breast is getting pretty raw and my nipple is beginning to break down so I was very happy to have the weekend. Underarm is swollen as is the breast. Its not pretty but if its going to help me to never have to deal with this again its worth it. I was using the aloe vera until my cotton sportsbra stuck to it and I had to pull it off, that was not good. I am using the aquaphor as much as I hate it, it is helping much better for me. I continued to wear a bra until about last Tuesday, its not an option anymore. Hanes cotton sports bra is working out pretty good. I cannot wait to be done and take back my life!!

Well wishes to all of you.

Ouch Lemon! It stuck to your skin? YIKES!! Hope the last of your treatments go well and high five on almost done for you! Why do you hate Aquaphor? I need to learn all about this stuff! My mapping/CT/tat appt is tomorrow and I am nervous but I want to get this show on the road. My "gold seeds" were planted on Thursday and it hurt for like 24 hours but now feels fine. My "cavity" is kind of lumpy with the seroma, but other than that, I just want to start and finish! 10 tx's in ONE WEEK! Hoping I don't have skin issues, but we shall see!

Happy Easter/Passover to all of you!

Tuxtails, you're an inspiration!  Onward into the future!  I don't wonder that you got emotional.  It's a big experience in itself and signifies a turning point too.

Thanks everybody for the confirmation about the importance of hydration.  I'll do my best.  It will be worth it if I can reduce the rawness you talked about, Lemon68!  Ouchies!

Deep inspiration breath hold is where you hold your breath during each beam.  The point is to inflate the chest and get the heart farther away from the beam.  I'm doing axillary radiation because of my sentinel node micrometastasis, so I gather that is more helpful for me than most.  Plus there's a fair amount of heart disease in my family and I was extra concerned about heart impact. Because my center hadn't done it before, they weren't sure how long it would take to get enough rads in.  On my set-up day, they tested to see if I could hold my breath for a full 60 seconds.  To my surprise I could!  The last 5 seconds were pretty tough.  However, I haven't gotten much over 30 seconds since then.  I haven't really had to--the beams are really 20-25 seconds each--except a couple of times when they tried to take an image during the beam which added about 10 seconds.  I "failed" both times, but that was apparently no big deal, as they just didn't get the image that way.  If I can't hold my breath for the whole regular beam, it only means they have to repeat some of it to complete the rads delivery from that angle.

April485, good luck with the 2x/day big rads week!

April- I just dont like the greasiness of the Aquaphor its like vaseline but it is helping. My sports bra soaks alot of it into it, kinda gross.

I do have a question. My RO is a dud, doesnt really answer my questions and seems to have a one line answer for everything, he just says the same thing everytime I see him. I will be glad to be done with him.

What are the chances after lumpectomy for reoccurance with rads? without? How much safer are we after putting ourselves though this?

Cindy- your telling your lefties to hang in there, I tell my leftie to behave or her fate will be the same as her twin! I tell my DH all the time my left is trying to get as far away from the right as possible!

    Smile
