They are tiny little re-openings, the size of a grain of rice or smaller. If I could just leave them in the open, they would dry up and scab in a day. It's hard to go to work like that :-)
-
Tammy - you really don't want them to dry and scab. For best healing, an antibiotic ointment will prevent trapping infection and a gauze pad to cover. It is amazing how much trouble a few little tiny openings can cause. Also, no swimming or bath tub til they are completely healed.
-
why not, MartyJ?
-
Because though tiny, the tiny openings are pathways for bacteria to enter the body and create an infection. A shower is okay, but you don't want to soak in the water or pool. The incisions heal from the inside out. They actually may not scab over because there is nothing to create the scab (usually blood from a cut). It there is liquid oozing out, you should check with your doc to be sure there are no problems.
-
MartyJ I echo the ladies on the DIEP 2013 list said, you are simply wonderful! Thanks!
I think most of them are from the stitches working their way out. -
Tammy... I agree with Marty, stay away from baths and pools until you are completely healed. It can take a while depending on how big the opening is.
-
Interesting to hear the different experiences with open wounds. Mine was very tiny and my underlying stitches were still fine so I'm wondering if that's why the butterfly was recommended to me like an external stitch. I was also told not to use anti bx ointment for some reason, which I can't remember. Something about moisture? I know several of you have been to wound care clinics which sounds like the way to go for the best care. It just takes us so long to heal doesn't it? I hope you both recover steadily!
-
Cindy... Moisture makes it difficult for an open wound to heal. For my wound, i was told to keep it dry, use betadine and cover with a pad. When it didn't improve, I was told to use a wet/dry packing (packing saline covered gauze, stuffed into the wound and then covered with a dry pad)... That didn't work for me either.. So I needed a debridement and wound vac. But the problem arose when the incision was too moist from ointment. I had some blisters nearby that were getting ointment, and I guess the ointment was getting on the incision. I was also using the non-stick gauze. These are both bad for incisions.
-
Betsy, that makes sense. Sorry it was such a rough process for you!
-
The first one I had was about the size of a dime and half inch deep, it took weeks for it to heal. I had home care coming daily to deal with it. I was told if there is anything oozing, polysporin, gauze and keep out of baths, pool, hot tubs etc to use polysporin if you could see "white" in it. When its pink keep it dry and covered. Still no soaking.
Yes, I could see it healing from the inside as well. Now I have the small ones too. My PS said yesterday they are common and just keep it covered and dry but a little polysporin periodically won't hurt. Just don't saturate it. I also have been flushing them with saline solution after showers and allowing to air dry
Hugs to everyone. I have number 20/25 rads today. Sighhhhhhh..... Almost done!! -
Luanne, I had a 7-inch opening a while back the homecare nurse helped me to pack it and it healed up in about five weeks. Now, all I have are those pesky tiny ones. Yesterday afternoon, I contacted PS about them and he told me to do exactly what MartyJ said to do :-).
Cindy, we are mirroring each other, left-right and right-left. I did NSM on both, did you?
-
Congrats Luanne-almost to top of this mountain!!!!!!!!!
going to my primary NP tomorrow-day 5 of augmentin for my sinus infection. hurts to bend over. sinus pressure. sx for stage 2 in one week. am worried about htis sinus issue. havn't booked our plane tickets yet-going to san antonio.
also have followup at my MO office-going to see new NP there. I had thought I would swit ch somewhere. I want tumor markers and they will just have to get over and do them on me. OMG little freaked to go to MO office.
Had little pity party this morning for myself. just want this shit over. I want my damn nipples. DH caught my fall. pushing fluids and feeling more better mentally.
-
Tammy, curious....did they remove nipples and reposition them?
-
No, just stuffed the pockets with ab-tissue.
-
My date for round two is coming up quickly - 8 May. Reducing the size of the flaps as I ended up with DD instead of C cups after the first surgery.
Saw the PS this week and he has said 1-2 nights in hospital, drain in both breasts again that should come out on 2nd day. He will be doing some liposuction and some surgical shaping.
Can't wait to get rid of half of these things. I am finding them so heavy that I am more comfortable wearing a light bra to bed, and my neck and back ache at the end of a day.

I had a unilateral DIEP procedure in September of 2012. I have an appointment with my PS this week to set up Stage 2 for April. I am interested in knowing exactly what your Stage 2's consisted of. I know I need sizing of the DIEP breast, probably lipo to fill in dent at the top, lift on natural breast, scar revision, dog ears removed from abdominal incision, & finally nipple. I just want to know which of these procedures is most common for the Stage 2, understanding there'll be Stages 2b etc., later down the road. Thanks!!!
-
My 2a consisted of a bilateral breast lift, dog ears removed, lipo of flanks, fat injections, and contouring. (5 hours)
My 2b in May will be scar revision. The scar is being lowered and smoothed. It is lumpy now. Also, (embarrassed) my hooha is quite puffy and it will be lifted and eased of the bloating. My doctor says this is quite common but few girls mention it. Mine really sticks out there. It doesn't look good in a bathing suit or yoga pants. I am very conscious of it. This happened from stage 1.
I will have a 2c for final fat grafting and lipo of the thighs in the fall. -
Cherrie, I will be interested to find out how the whooha lift works out for you. Why does it happen? Not just swelling?
-
Cheri, no embarrassment between us!! Now that you mention it, mine looks a little "larger" I just never noticed because of the scar probs. I'm glad you said lowering of it. Mine is a lot higher then I hoped. With a "tummy tuck" I can proudly wear a bikini except for that big ugly scar!!!
How about belly button scar. Mine is a lot bigger and bolder than I imagined. Or am I being impatient again lol -
mine looked little bigger after. but the hair has regrown and I think its normal size. I am getting little nervous about stage 2. I just want this shit to over with. I want boobs my husband won't cringe to look at. loooking at my scars just reminds him of the bc tht almost killed me. really puts a damper on the sex life.
-
My Dr. said that the "hooha" lift is the best gift of all. 😄😄 I don't know what causes this, but I am glad I mentioned it to my doctor and something will be done. It really wasn't this puffy before surgery. At first I thought it was because I had a tummy and couldn't see it. Now I can see it. LOL!
-
Hi Cherrie, please do let us know how does hooha lift work. I also noticed the puffiness, but was like you said, embarrassed to acknowledge it even to myself. Now I am announcing it to the www (whole wide world).
-
Surgery is May 10. I will let you know how it went. I don't know how they lower a scar. By belly is so tight I don't see any give there! We'll see. I trust my doctor.
-
Haha!!! Lol at the puffy hooha's! Announcing to the whole world. Maybe we couldn't see it before with tummy in the way. Lol! You have a point.
Don't be nervous frdntn. Stage 2 is easy compared to 1. -
Sharon - my stage 2 consisted of removal of dog ears, reduction of foob, and a bit of lipo on the side of the foob. Stage 2b was a lift and reduction to the other side. Stage 2c was flattening the areola of the boob.
I still have to have a nipple done on the foob (probably this summer) and then the areola tat as well. If I'd have removed both nipples I'd probably have gone with 3d tatoos, but with one real nipple, a real one makes sense on the foob.
-
I can't help but wonder how we could possibly be embarrassed to talk about our swollen hoohas when we've all let everyone and their uncle see our boobies!!! Lol
#22 done!!! Thank God for dilaudid!!! And beer, thank you very much for beer!! But mostly thank you for BCO!! -
Question: does the dog ears appear as soon as your first DIEP recon is done or does it appear weeks after? I am 8-weeks out and I don't think I have any at this time.
-
I don't think I have dog ears either. IDK. but sometimes I can feel my intestines-feels like there is alien baby down there. If we're going to talk about hoohaas I can talk about my bowels.
-
You go, fredntan!
-
My dog ears were leftover skin from the bmx...the diep made it better but they r still there just not as bad
