Unemployment while on LTD

My company is about to terminate me as I transition from STD to LTD. In the termination packet they sent me unemployment application info. I wouldn't think I woud be eligible you'd need to be looking for work. Maybe they figure I'll be looking for different work or a job with few hours closer to home so I'd be eligible in the short term? I just thought it was strange. Has anyone run into this?

    Annie, they probably sent you the standard package, as they are required to do. When I was on long term disability, I was not allowed to collect unemployment.  When I went off of LTD, I applied for Unemployment and got it.  It all depends on the time frame that Unemployment uses. 

    I also don't think LTD will let you received Unemp while they are paying you--if you are only working a 'little' they will figure you are not disabled.  You know, anything to get out of paying!!

    But do check it all out for yourself--I could be wrong.

    I think each state may be slightly different but in general you do need to be able & willing to work, and usually actively looking for a job, to collect unemployment. If you can't work, you would collect disability instead -- not in addition to. At least that's how it works in my state. They probably just sent you their standard termination packet.

    Thanks, that is what I thought. I'll be confirming all this for my state and looking to see what the time frame is for collecting unemployment in case I ever go off LTD to see if I'm still eligible. Given my dx, unlikely I'll every return to paid work.

    I think if you have had continuous coverage for some period of time (18 months? You'll need to look it up), there is some HIPAA provision that prevents insurers from discriminating against you for pre-existing conditions. Not sure, but it rings a bell from a few years ago.
